Old setup available ?
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, October 16, 2006 1:24 PM

I am not a garden railroader - I don't have the time or patience.

A house in my neighborhood looks like it has a pretty elaborate garden railroad in the back yard. The house sold several months back & it appears that the new owner has no interest. The railroad looks like it has had no attention in 18 months or so - outdoors in the Denver area. I don't know the quality of the items or condition.

I am interested in the market for this stuff. If I were to approach the present owner & ask if they were willing to part with the stuff, how is the demand for track, buildings, etc? Would it be worth my time to uninstall it, clean it & put it up for sale (Ebay, etc)?

You find a place to unload all that stuff let me know.

I wonder if it's Kevin's old house.

Isn't me. I left my railroad in Rochester in place when we moved to Colorado, but the only other place I've lived out here was a 2nd floor apartment for a year before we bought our current house.

Oldacura,

Unlike some areas of model railroading, such as Lionel, there is not a big collector market in large-scale railroading. Might I suggest that the owners, if they are interested, donate the items to a local club?

I stopped by yesterday afternoon & looked over the fence again. The track appears to be 45mm (I'm guessing - didn't measure). There must be several hundred feet of track. There is a long curved trestle. Also a long (3 feet ?) steel-truss bridge. Several buildings. A bunch of switches.

I rang the doorbell & asked about the set. The people had recently moved in & said they would at some point probably remove it. I gave them my card. They said the control console was a large panel.

Since I don't know much about model railroading and don't have the expertise to uninstall & sell, maybe I will suggest that they donate it. The recipient could do the dismantling & the owners could take a charitable donation.

It's to bad something like this has to happen. I know I will never sell my house to anyone BUT a garden railroader so it will be used. I had a deed restriction added to the deed to my house so if I die and the house is sold the railroad can NEVER be removed.

Kevin, when you say Rochester, do you mean as in NY? I know there is a garden club there, and I am from there, but currently in Albany for law school. Does Rochester present any special challenges for garden railroads?

I would contact a local garden RR club and get them involved in pulling up the layout, I'm sure they would be help and they would be able to remove items so that they could be resold without any damage, they might even buy stuff right on the spot.

Description
The Denver Garden Railway Society, founded in 1979, is a non-profit
organization dedicated to education and the promotion and enjoyment of all aspects of garden railroading. One of the original such societies in the U.S., our organization founded the National Garden Railway Convention in 1985 and has hosted five of these events with registrants from all over the
world. DGRS will next host the 2004 Convention in August of that year.

The club encompasses all facets of this fascinating hobby, and includes
electric operation, battery-powered and clockwork trains, and trains that actually run on live steam. Most of our members have, or hope to have, gauge
G, O or gauge 1 railways in their gardens or back yards.
