Take a look at the general discussion, Wed. afternoon and at least 4 subjects that have absolutely nothing to do with garden railroads![V][V]

Yes, I'm just as bad; my thoughts also wander! I don't really object when a subject wanders and then finds it's way back to the original subject matter, but to have a number of subjects on a garden rr forum that have nothing to do with the garden rr??? [:0][:0]

Perhaps those subjects should be carried on some other more general forum, or we should police ourselves to trying to keep non subject matter on the one header so that those who really aren't interested in the BS sessions can just skip over it! That's getting a bit hard to do with so many non rr subjects on the board![*^_^*][D)][oX)]

OK, I've done the spout off thing![soapbox]

Well, this reminds me of club newsletters.
If nobody submits anything, it can't get printed.
If nobody wants to talk about trains, then we don't talk about trains.

If we can't enter into friendly banter without fear of offending the self-proclaimed PC Police, I don't need to participate at all.

OK ready for a shock ?? There are a lot of non trains subjects. I agree, and it would be silly not to. But I see a lot of folks with different backgrounds learning and finding common ground. We all hate gas prices, and utilities prices, we all have projects to do around the house, just not as big as Matt, and we all drink something. It has been really relaxed lately, and I feel I have gotten to know some of the folks on here better.

I showed my only G train in my pics, I can't run it outdoors, as we are in anti flood mode, everything is picked up where it floods, and the patio is empty in case of over flow. We had the waterfall going last night off the patio, but it wasn't 6 feet across this time. Only about 30 inches. Rain came down at 1.25 " per hour according to radar report.

I am running the HO track in the garage, cab forward is looking very cool. (See something about trains)

With snow in snow country, and rain in sunny country, I think right now garden railroading is falling by the wayside until better weather.

It looks like many days of non trains for most of us.

Take care Capt.

Captain Bob
I agree with you whole heartedly. My argument has nothing to do with political correctness. It has to do with the subject. How much stuff about powdery doughnuts and various types of nausious drinks can a body stand?

Well, folks, this thread is no better.
Here you have 7 posts on a non-train-related subject.
Now that the PC Police representative has departed, who is willing to take over the position and whip this board into line?

Dont like it -dont read it, skipit and move on to the next one.

What I find hard to fathom is that while some readers complain about the very existance of the the coffe shop/gas price/off topic threads being on the forum, these same readers seam to have a very hard time NOT reading them? Is it like a tabloid newspaper sitting on the table in the waiting room promising titilating photos inside, ya just cant put it down can ya?[;)][:P]

I come here to talk trains as well, however I like to know to whom I am talking trains with, meaning who they are, what they do, not just Mr. X who has 300 ft of mainline likes deisels etc.

Maybe in the future any post that is not train related , put ( Not trains) next to your subject as to not Offend anyone, those who are here for just the trains and have no intrest in the other people can pass it over and those who are interested in to whom they talk to through post can view it and learn something about their fellow Garden/large scale person.[soapbox]

I think I'll put TRAINS RELATED on every post, just TO offend when it isn't.

I am a friend of Troys and i agree with the basis of what he has to say but we all talk about things to do with our general life and that is very good; as learning about each other should breed tolerance and understanding; and the world could well do with more of that.

However I do support the argument that if you don't like it, skip it; and i think a great young man like Troy should observe that. I do understand that some one has really got under his skin and in many peoples minds including mine he is well justified.

However a lot of the subjects and comments made on this column to my mind are so inappropriate; I wonder if the commentors have any knowledge of Garden Railways at all: so guess what, i just skip it.

I also find that many really griity sunjects get virtually ignored and other quite pointless ones get a lot of comment; and no offence Brian but what about that bit about your poor old rabbit.

So its a bit like eating, eat what you want to eat and leave the Brussel Sprouts.

I think I am the oldest person contributing to this column, so I must sooner or later show some wisdom. I was born 23 December 1936 and i have eleven grandchildren can anyone beat that.

What a great night to run trains,,heheheh, i invited a concrete contractor over and he said ,"won't it be to dark to run trains"? I just laughed and said ,"NO, They all have head lights"!!
But he never showed.
Man, I foget the basics sometimes.

Is it REAL? or Just 1:29 scale?

Hey TOC

What's needed is a PC-PC (PoliticallyCorrect-PoliceCommittee). Things will be looking up in no time![;)][}:)][:D][:D]

Of course, as you know, there is no quicker way to get things ground to a halt than appointing a committee. Which then leaves those who like to discuss "whatever" to do so, while the PC-PC decides what constitutes an infraction, contravention, misdemeanor etc. etc.

What I was trying to say was not that I don't read or participate, but shouldn' t we try to limit the off topic stuff to the one header, or an off topic section of the forum?

I, too, very much enjoy learning more about you all; and I think I've stated that in the past.

I also have participated in the gas price thing and others. I am guilty of digressing from the subject in seeing where someone is from and asking where that is, or remarking on something that some statement someone has made has jogged a thought or question in my mind.! One also relates one's life experiances into asking and answering questions.

Yes, sometimes it is indeed difficult to keep the subject matter pure to the garden rr subject, but when we know what we are going to say has nothing to do with garden rr, shouldn't we try to keep it in a corner by itself???

Like was said before, if you don't want to read it, skip it! My question and thought is to keep it where those who care about that will know what to skip!

Perhaps we should have a committee of die hard garden railroaders and put every topic before them and they can decide whether it gets posted and under what title. They could then pick the forum members who can answer/add to that topic and if they step out of line or somebody joins in without orders then they will be sent somewhere where they can't interfere. Bugger me, wasn't this done somewhere in Europe last century.
Get a grip guys, read it if you want, don't if you don't want. We've been here before, let's not go there again.
Cheers,
Kim

We all have a common ground, the garden RR. We are also older, wiser (well, some of us) and better off financially. We have established families, careers and outlooks on life. Some of us are leaders in our communities, or occupy other influential positions. This invariably will lead to digressions in the topics. I can live with that, but perhaps we do need to stay a little more focused. I enjoy learning about the other members of this forum; it gives us a sense of community. The “off topic” thread seems to be doing well, I read the last 3 or 4 posts and if I have something to add I will. I don’t think posting a new topic every time an off topic idea pops into the head is a good way of doing business, adds to the clutter.

I like Matt’s work related topic, if we can add our lines of work to that, who would be offended? Good idea, Matt, I would like to know what every one here does for a living, but could you imagine if we each started our own personal work threads?

I frequent another forum over at British Only Motorcycles, what a dead zone that is. Topics like "does part xy123 fit a 72 bike?" gives about 3 or 4 responses then dies. No body talks about a nice ride they took, or a family outing, or anything other than strictly bike related topics. BORING! But informative if you actually own a Brittish bike. I don't know any of those contributors, and I really don't want to. I hope it never gets dull like that in the garden forum, that's when I'll pack up my toys and go home.

Kim,

Right on! I'll say it again, if you don't like it, don't read it, simple. However, I think any of us has the right to express his or her opinion on any reasonable subject. Example, if I find constant references to choice of beverage annoying, and I do, I should have the right to say so. I think a response along the lines of "I think this thread is interesting and here's my input .......................... but please stop making goofy coffee references". No one should take offense at that, it's my opinion and the next respondent can either honor it or ignore it.

Ah, but if the thread is titled "Coffee", and you don't want to read about coffee, but you do anyway, THEN you have no right to clomplain!
Like someone who gets an e-mail saying "click here for the latest (deleted)" and you know you HATE that stuff, but do you have the right to click on it then complain when you knew what you were doing?
Not really a fine line at all.

FYI: for other discussion boards I've been on, the general term for posting a message that's not topic related is to put: OT: xxx your subject here xxx.

The best part of all of this is we are discussing a subject like adults. With as diverse of a group as we have, it is amazing that we get along like we do. I have learned so much about trains in three months, I have move up in the HO world to better quality, I understand quality in O and G worlds, and enjoying playing trains with my kids. It is great to see everyone talking and having a good time.

I enjoyed

the submarines

the weather, (it's raining again here)

the work photo's (thanks matt)

the kind prayers and thoughts for my son (thanks again)

the COFFEE (or smoothies, or tea, or soda, or hard liquor)

the stories

and mainly the information from all. THANKS

Make it 26.

My favorite hobby sites, usually have a seperate forum specifically for out of topic converstations. I like those sites, because there's more of a feeling of a community.

I'm making an assumption that when you get with your train friends in the world, that you do make "small talk" in addtion to talking trains.

I've moved from NScale to LS. I used to visit 2 NScale sites. One I abonded upon the move. Why? Only NScale talk was allowed. I didn't abandon the other site. Why? Off topic conversation is encouraged. There's a lot of "friends" there. The "friendships" I have there transcend nscale and trains.

Just my 2 bits.

I am trying to think of something smart****d to say but i think it has all been said.

I have become very interested in ebay and possibly i have become the terror of ebay and would like to talk about strategy but no one seems interested. To me and these are my wifes words "ebay is like and Aladins Cave to Ian".

With all the incredible bargains going; to do with G scale model trains i thought that we could nearly establish a separate section to do with ebay.

I am also having trouble raising interest in Germany, regard a very lage G scale order i am going to place, including 3 top range LGB locomotives with the works and i can hardly get them to answer me, am I doing something wrong. I thouhgt I might be offending them by using English so i had one message translated but still very little interest, can anyone help.

WOOW, this may NOT be worth it.
After finally recieving my 8 packets of people awhile back I thought, tonights the night. I shall install them.

After giving up on the obs car I thought the diner would look good with them,, pep.
well how they EVER got those cars together is behond me?????
I used a rubber mallet to brake it loose and then vise grips on the end that has the wire to the lights. (unpluged)
About half way off it got stuck, i was almost ready to give up but it suddenly broke loose.
Now after wiping up the blood off the car and getting my finger bandaged. I continued. I was so hot from the fight that I stripped down to my speedos. U.P. yellow.

I also realized how the HOT GLUE gun got its name.
Boy the people sure looked nice. Even a lady sitting on the table talking to her friend.
I need some stand up people or waiters would be nice.
Now the next half hour was spent tring to get it together. And yes with the pressure came the blood again from my figure.

From now on I decided its just not worth it.
Back when I did my dome cars they came right apart and back together.

Just thought I'd share this before you think about buying any more folks for the cars.

Is it REAL? or Just 1:29 scale?

If you plow into a whimsical thread far enough and then find that it's taking an annoying twist, you just don't revisit it. But if the thread is about some other pertinent subject and gets hijacked with silly references to lord-only-knows-what, then you owe it to the forum to try to get the thread back on track by trying to cut off the foolishness.

I agree with Rene, if you're going to start a new thread and it's not train related, label it O.T. (off topic) and try to stick to the thread topic. If while responding to a thread and feel the need to digress, start a new thread.
