you asked me tell about myself. Born in Peru IN. My dad worked on the rr, starting on the Wabash and sticking with it through all the mergers. He started at the bottom but accepted promotions with transfers. Springfield IL, Moberly Missouri, St Louis, Montepelior OH. After about eight transfers he quit and started back as a brakeman in Peru IN. Full circle. Bought a little hobby farm just outside of town. The tracks went past the back field. Now he lives in Columbia City IN. He retired several times. Now he occasio preaches and does funerals. He likes doing the Memorial Day service. He was a Marine in Korea.
So i i went to high school in Bunker Hill IN, which was half farm kids and half kids from Grissom AFB. Three years in the army then GI Bill took me all the way through my phd in public health, U of Michigan.
started as an assistant prof at U of IA. Became full professor at three medical schools, sequentially. Retired from Mayo At 59 1/2. Now I teach phd students online for Walden U, part time. Life is good.
my wife is not retired yet, so i putter around the house by myself most of the time.

Thermometer was flirting with 90 when I was done wacking and mowing and headed to the shower.
SIL made the new post base and I finally finished the porch project this AM except paint and removing the temporary prop. Need to wait for the baby Robins to leave the nest on top of it.
No real plans for the weekend. Probably work on the bucket. Maybe a picnic for the Mrs and I on Monday.
Son is chomping at the bit to plant corn and make hay. Storms predicted tomorrow.

The forecast calls for upper eighties here in Rochester MN for the forseeable future. We will get in the car shortly to head for northern WI (between Eau Claire and Marshfield) for the annual memorial day festivities with my wife’s cousins. It will be hot and if all goes according to tradition, it will rain.
Eau Claire has a train store that claims to be the only one in NW WI. Maybe we should stop there for a little break on the way up. they won’t have any on30s but maybe something will beg to go home with me.
A very hot one already on The North Bluff above Marseilles.
Wife and I went to Rural King in Peru so she could get 12 more bags of mulch. Man they had about three semi-truck loads of the stuff last month and only 3 pallets of it left today. Glad we went when we did. Stopped at Steak & Shake for lunch and took the long way home past Starved Rock state park. A very scenic ride.

Rob - I have been trying to get my fence repaired/stained for about 2 years...one attempt after another to get a quote...then the couple times i got a quote after a few actually showed up to inspect, the co would stop responding/disappear...and I never had a chance to discuss the quote on the couple i got...some here say that all the rebuilding down south (Houston) after the last hurricane/flooding took up all the construction/trade workers...plus building here is crazy with apartments...

Turned on the A/C yesterday afternoon for the first time this year. Except for a 5 minute test run last week. Roy you are so right about trying to hire dependable people for household work. Things that use to be just minor chores are now major projects. The young will understand when their time comes. gas has topped 3 dollars a gallon for the holiday weekend.

This morning I found maps of Indiana rail lines and got to study them. In 1906, both the Wabash RR and the traction company, Ft. Wayne and Wabash Valley, ran from Peru to Wabash. From the map, i cannot tell if these lines were parallel or whether the steam locos ran on the narrow gauge with the interurban. Both presumably carried freight as well as passengers.

Fence co finally showed up to stain my fence after a month of delays and excuses, only to fall short on stain, so about 50 ft left (2 sides) and not sure when they are coming back ... argh ... there is no competence left in the trades anymore...and I am getting too old to do these things myself. They did a good job on what they did...then one says "so what"....

Jim....When we started planning the new U.S. Grant Bridge at Portsmouth we had to negotiate with the Coast Guard as to the distance from pier to pier. We were astonished to learn that the old U.S. Grand Bridge was only struck by a barge only one time even though the river is narrow. The barge had become loose and drifted downstream. BAM! The river pilots are normally very good at negotiating the Ohio River currents and bends.

Not much going on, Waiting for the grass to dry so I can cut around the shed before it gets too hot. Sounds like there is construction going on to the south of us. A 22 acre site. They built a shed two years ago so maybe it is a house. Can't see through the trees. It will be better than what it could of been. Before the crash in 08 they had subdivided in into 10 lots but it sold as one section later. The best neighbors are the ones you can't see.

Ideaal beautiful weather. Low 80s and low humidity. We spent a lot of yesterday just enjoying the outdoors and doing some gardening. Got shots in both hands Tuesday, trigger release problems so I had a lawn service cut the grass. It really looks good this time of year and they clean it up real nice.
JimPhish - It HAD a simulated wood grain, I removed it and filled in the holes, not with metal but body filler - in retrospec I shouldda kept the wood grain.....

Yep, that's correct have this concrete river behind our house. Most of the time there is less than 6" of water in it. However, when we have a lot of rain, it is raging! Probably about 300' wide and a maximum height of about 25', so it holds a LOT of water. Common items found floating, (when enough water present), is shopping carts, tires, telephone poles and junk. A few years ago a car went off a bridge about 1 mile upstream, and ended up with a naked guy floating by.
Anyway still have not resolved the Lizard issue, as a matter of fact discovered a second one. This one is considerably smaller, probably only about 24" long. Have only seen it in a tree in the neighbors yard, not on the ground yet. Think I may have to see about doing some hunting.
Finally, got my latest changes to the layout done. What I thought would be simple was anything but. Moved 2 switches, (Ross), and had a heck of a time getting the wires correct. I had forgotten about an intermediate connetion point, and the LED's wires had to be crossed, then it worked correctly. Only took me a day and half to resolve.
Chris doing well, he took the FJ to the mine this week. He needs to do some data sampling on some wells in the general area. So he is camping all week instead of going to a hotel. Talked to him yesterday and he was loving it. He told me in addition to his tent, he bought an "illuminated" hammock!? Never heard of such a thing.

Good evening all, went back to oral surgeon yesterday and he says I'm good to go now on the extracted tooth. Now it's back to my regular dentist in two weeks to see what can be done to modify my partial. I feel like I am being held together with chewing gum and bailing wire for now but manage to eat somehow.
V8, re iphones etc., I'm still living in the dark ages myself. Barely no how to get on and off of the computer.
My train buddies want to get together Friday do look at some videos of trains from a local steam train operation called the Fillmore and Western. They had a steam up recently of their 2-8-0 engine.
Have an appointment tomorrow with gastrointerologist. Hope he doesn't want to do another colonoscopy. Haven't had one for a while. I'm tired of dentist and doctors. Getting old is no fun.

Good Afternoon from beautiful Sunny 77°F Southern Ohio,
Today was the last day of school for the kids. Each of them are at friend’s homes for the evening. I’m wishing I could be home cutting grass but I’m at work in the monitoring mode waiting for turnover. I flipped the blade on the weed eater and leveled the mowing deck on the JD last night after supper to have everything ready for when I’m off work. I hope to finish the rough cutting on the south bank Friday, take out the sapling stumps and run the mower over it by Monday. It is an steep area about 30’ x 300’ that had not been mowed in years. I’ll have Gabriel with me to help with the stumps. The weather is supposed to be nice, down into the low 60’s tonight so we’ll open up the windows and turn on the house fan.

Don - The critter watch is fun. We’ve already had several brown snakes, five lined skink lizards, box turtles, deer, and many varieties of song birds this spring.

Rob - I had a 1976 Aspen wagon that I put a built 360 in with a manual shift automatic. It was loud and obnoxious and I loved it......This thing is comfortable, reliable and hauls a$$ and groceries and gets almost 2X the fuel milegae and a Hemi to boot. Love this thing........
Sorry, guys, Mrs. Rodgers is very easy on the eyes, and after those horrendous Honda commercials, I don't miss Hinchcliff one bit. Still, the Andretti's and the Foyts are my favorites on Indy Day.....
Still won't watch much of the For Sale NASCAR until there is a Dodge in the field....with a HEMI!! Too much Spec car and not enough "REAL" car....

I grabbed a coffee and my camera and went for drive to my local train yard. I managed to catch an ex-CSX Dash-8 that must have blown its turbo. The black smoke that was coming out of it was quite the site! I'd upload pictures, but I'm staying in the anti 3rd party picture hosting club!!
DougM/Kev - I'll be curious if they return next year. They left the nest yesterday. I think my wife was actually disappointed.

Already helped the neighbor pick up cut limbs from trimming the trees along the lane. He tore the Love Joy coupler out of the lift motor so we are going to Farm & Fleet later to get a replacement.
