Hello all

Been a little bit since I last checked in. Another quiet night on the mountain. We are doing VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) where we tie in w/ other telescopes around the world this week. They don't run the program every night and tonight it one of these. 

Went up to Apache Junction last week (east of Phoenix) w/ a buddy to pick up an N scale layout he bought from a LHS up there. 5' X 10' so it was an interesting move. Plus the place was on the second floor. We got it  home ok. Will be neat when he gets it set up. He has a fair bit of interesting N gauge rolling stock to run on it. 

Been enjoying the little Japanese N-scale trolley I got recently. It is practically the spitting image of our #869 car @ the 'barn'. Nice detail and drive. 

Just put some cork road bed I had under the 3 X 4' O gauge test track I have on the mountain. Bought it for the layout at home a while back, but I'm thinking that I will go w/ some kind of carpet on that one. Came out ok and was able to do it w/ materials and supplies I already had. Something just feels right about that.

A winter mix today of sleet and rain on The North Bluff today. 32 degrees now.

Buckeye, I have only got as far on the bridge as in the last picture I posted. I have not found any decals that have white letters and clear background that are 5/8" tall to letter it yet. I want to make it an EJ&E bridge. Other than that it is done.

I think it is that Ryan has been gone, not me.

Does anyone know if you can take a O22  switching mecanism   and attach it to a  O42 manual switch?  I live close to  border between the Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, 30 feet from ocean in N.S.  and can see N.B. , its is only 4 miles across the Bay.   We have had snow evey Wednesday  since the middle of February our private road is1/2 mile long  after it was  plowed out, the banks were 8 to 10 feet tall and just wide enough to get the car out, there was a 3 day stretch where the wind blew and you could not see 200 feet.  Thanks  Graeme

Kevin.... I have printed stick on decals with my printer.  The only problem is you can't print white.  I found the clear medium at Staples.  The two posters on O'Grady's Tavern pictured below were made that way.

BTW, you probably have not seen my other railroad bridge I helped construct on CSX mainline.  It was much harder than my orange bridge.

If you want white letters on a clear window - or any color for that matter - there is a guy who will engrave whatever you want into a thin plexi-type material.

The engraving is on the inside - reversed. You apply some paint to the window and it seeps into the engraved areas. Then just wipe the excess paint off the glass. You don't need to try and paint the letters or brush paint - just apply a little paint and wipe off the excess. Very reasonable cost and shipping is like sending a letter.

Here's your solution. I didn't realize the context when I responded to Buckeye.

We used to use this stuff in advertising a thousand years ago and surprisingly it is still made. These are rub-off letters. You burnish them on to your item one letter at a time. It is not hard to do and 5/8" letters would be about 48 point.

You might also find this in an Art Supply store. Brand names are Letraset and Chartpak as I recall.

Roy, sorry to hear about your four legged friend.

We went to Saturday night mass and breakfast out this morning.  Had a big breakfast.  Can't say the same about dinner last night.  Our pest, er, widowed friend went with us.  He likes nothing but cheap places and they must honor coupons.  Funny thing is, money is no problem with this guy.  Wound up going to Pollo Loco which is fine for take out but eating in sucks.  Absolutely no ambiance.  Eating in an empty box car would be more cheerful.  Therefore, when we want to be cheap, we go with him but if we want to go to a nice place, we go by ourselves.

I am certain there is white rub off lettering available in the size you need somewhere. I'll poke around a bit.

 

I'm an idiot when it comes to anything other than inches - how big is 7mm? How many mm's (or M&M's) do you need? This lettering was offered in point sizes when I used it and 72 pt was roughly one inch.

Here is the Chartpak site, but I can't find any products. I used so many of these products when I first got into the business 40 years ago. Chartpak, Koh-in-nor, Rapidograph, Leroy, Bainbridge. With computer graphics, I am surprised anyone makes them

Nonetheless, if you Google "rub off lettering" you should find other sources. If you can only find black, here is a way to do it, but it takes some work:

Paint your surface white. Let it dry for days. Lay down the black or whatever color lettering you can get on the white surface. 

Paint the entire surface the entire color you want the finished bridge to be and let it sit for a few days. Using Scotch tape, lay it down over where the lettering is under the new coat of paint and remove the lettering, revealing the white underneath. This is work, and it takes patience and a watchful eye, but it can be done.

My work is no where close to yours but I like a mix of postwar and some better scenes.

One name I want you all to remember from today's race:  Jack Hawkesworth.  Kid drove the wheels off the 41 car for AJ today and advanced from 21st to 8th.  A little more luck with the yellows and he could have had 3rd.  Sato started off well but faded at the end.  Penske and Ganassi swept the top 5 as expected.  Honda does have their work cut out for them.   Simona had a rough day and Sarah's/Ed's team did ok.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Morning all.  Back last night from lake house with a load of bigger "stuff".  Off to Frankie's later to install backup camera he gave me for Christmas.  Scheduling has been a problem.  Seems everytime we set a date, it was super cold or snowing.  He wants to install so OK with me.

Frank does great work and is a great source for "how to do".

Lets see if Bob monitors the Coffee Pot.  The outer add pages were a little "too tight".  Ripped the cover and back page right off my new CTT.  A little Scotch Magic tape did a good job on getting it back on.

If my name appears anywhere, He's drawn to it like a moth to a flame. In the past, I've tried to ask him about it, but he tells me that my posts generate "dozens" of alerts from other posters complaining about my posts.

I tried posting about building a structure over the weekend, and it was deleted. I raised the question in this thread and that was deleted. Either the guy has a serious agenda to keep my posts about how to do stuff off this forum, or "dozens" of people here do.

I wrote a half dozen articles for CTT last year and when I posted about a building kit a friend of mine is offering, it took about twelve minutes to get it deleted under the guise of "it sounds like advertising." When I came back to that with "here are some pictures" without any other reference - instantly zapped.

If I make him that unhappy - he ought to just ban me already. It sounds like he would have "dozens" of supporters for that action.

Doing the mower serviced for the new season is today's job for me.

Wife is off for spring break.

My new Lionel Rock Island 6-38371 ALCO # 2031 remake set may get here today. I won't say where I got it ( because don't know if I can) but could not pass it up for $212.40 shipped to the house. List is $399.99

No other big plans.
