EU is going to make changes to increase train travel.  That includes higher speeds and more cross border traffic.  One big problem identified was when tracks were separated from operting companies the track owners jacked up prices to make big profits.  Cannot remember where but many track chargges went up 300%.

good article on how to get around on Japan's railway system.. Many common sense items but also info about the Japan rail pass.  One thing about the pass that was not clear is if you can buy it in the US ?

France  in the process of banning flights between cities that can be covered by rail in less than 2 - 1/2 hours.  Title of link slightly misleading as proposal has not completely cleared the legislative process.

Brenner base tunnel progress or lack of progress.  tunnel  expected to be in service 2028 ?  Notice the 90 degree tun to the east and the Emergency tunnel / station at that location.

The Brenner base tunnel construction is in a 1 billion Euro dispute.  The subcontractor for a section of the tunnel has been served with a notice of termination.  However the sub contractor has refused to continue construction on its segment as it believes the tunnel liner is too thin for the loads predicted.

So either the original design is faulty or the sub has calculated wrongly or maybe a combination of both ?  I can see why each side has much to loose in reputation if they are wrong.  Plus liability of both is also consideration if there is a failure in the future with the present design.

Maybe an independent design review ?

I know many Brits are happy about this. The UK passenger franchise model is coming to and end.

The link was copied wrong, with the HTML code left at the end instead of the slash character.

This is the correct link.

Any idea at all when the Williams Rail Review will be published?

Thanks for the fix.

Interesting about the restoration of the TEE. My German N scale layout is set in that era.

Network rail  ( Great Britian )  has published a plan to electrify 13,000 track Kms  ( ~ 8125 statue miles )  at about 450 track Kms ( ~ 281 SMs ) per year.  Article notes that requirements will need to have a ramp up or increasing supply chain for every needed part.

Have to wonder if this much this will limit other countries ability to electrify ?  With Chna still on a break neck speed for HSR installation connecting of all cities over ~400,000 population how will this effect the US for any extensions of CAT on the NEC ?

Note the ppicture of a current project of working on al 4 main tracks at once.

Japaneese RR (JR) is doing additional earthquake reinforcing of support pylons that structural engineers feel are necessary.  JR is going to clad pylons with steel probably somewhat Cal Dot did to parts of the 880 freeway.
