"Adventure on the Rails"
Posted by travelingengineer on Saturday, June 25, 2011 8:29 AM
May I commend the short but prescient article, "Adventure on the Rails: One first-class family discovers the unexpected joy-and wacky ineptness-of traveling by train," in the July/August 2011 issue of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL MAGAZINE, distributed today (June 25th) with the usual Saturday print edition of the JOURNAL. Despite some grievous misstatements, such as "get a private car, not a shared roomette," and the recommendation not to use the Bedroom showers, it is a refreshing and encouraging, albeit naive and candid, review of Amtrak traveling, especially with a family and also avoiding the inhumanity of travel by plane

I'll have to see if I can find that.

I wrote about my trip this spring  from east coast to west on Amtrak. I traveled alone but is was my first trip across country on train since 1960!  In short I found it the best way to travel by far. My long story is at

Dave, I really enjoyed the account of your trip to Fullerton and back.Thumbs Up My wife and I have taken the Cardinal both ways between Washington and Chicago, and we enjoyed it both ways (though last year, as we were eating lunch eastbound, the engineer speeded up on some very rough track and we wondered if we would be able to safely get back to our room). We have also taken the Southwest Chief from Chicago to Los Angeles; perhaps we will be able to make the reverse move on one of our future trips.

I have a sister-in-law in Lewisburg (she was born and grew up just south of the Greenbrier-Monroe county line), and when visiting her, either at her home or in Lewisburg, have greatly enjoyed that part of West Virginia.
