For thse involved in the discusion of whether or not 2156 could be brought back, or whether or not it would be a good idea;

It might be noteworthy that the Y's frame is cracked.

2.  Has anybody verified this?

3.  For our engineering types, what are the implications for the proposed move?

1. I have no clue, I think it was an existing issue when it was donated.

2. I have heard this from many people, among them one of our most senior volunteers, who has been around for a large prtion of the museum's existance.

I honestly cannot say that I know 100% for sure that it has been verified. 

But this guy doesn't spread rumors, if he says the Y6 has a cracked frame, I believe him, because even though I don't know it, he must have verified it at some point.

3. I don't think it is a serious enough issue to hold back the move, after all, NS had no problem giving her the "OK" once they repaired the air brake system.

However, It would definately be an issue to be adressed if the engine were to operate.

Doubt of a crack of this nature would be that serious to prevent operation.  Most late model steam had the American practice of "cast steel frame" technology.  This means that unlike British steam the frame was a foundry casting of poured steel - into one large unit.  This was then machined in one huge operation such as would be done in production of a modern Abrams tank by the military today.

Welding repair has progressed to the point that no one dreamed of in the 1930s.  Rivited boiler sections are no longer required for engineering purposes because welded boiler construction is so effective.  NW1218 firebox/boiler was in the process of being repaired with welded patches over the worn steel where in the old days an entire new boiler would have been required.  UP844 recieved a new 30 foot section of boiler about ten years ago.

This frame is weld repairable.

So if that is true about.... The y6b.... My theory makes since right.   They might put her on display in 1218's place and 1218 might be next to be restored to operation next.   Or no?

I don't know. From what I've heard the Y6a will be in 611's old spot.

But when the 5 years is up, she's to come back to St. Louis.

I think that we can all agree that one day 1218 will be restored to service.

I certainly hope that it doesn't!!! If it takes the 611's place, there next to the platform, then no one will be able to take pictures of the right side. It needs to be out where the 1218 is now in order for photos to be taken all around.

Pure logic would say that they would move all of them out to the open for the "big reunion" Then after a little while, move them in under the shed.

But thats just my speculation.

May 9th has been confirmed by MOT currator and dirrector. 2156 will leave sometime between 9 AM and 10AM.

This is great that the 2156 is now going to be moved back to Virginia.  It was moved to the St. Louis Union Station for display about 20 years ago and was there for a time.  I got to see it there at that time.
