Wisconsin Man Killed while walking on the tracks
Posted by railfan619 on Sunday, October 1, 2006 11:08 AM
Hi everyone well it's happened again a Kenosha county man was killed late friday night while walking. along the wisconsin central tracks in the village of sliver lake. The victims 18 year old friend told police that they were both drunk at the time of the accident. They also said that they were using the tracks as a short cut home that night.

As larry the cable guy would say if you see a train coming down the tracks (AS HE STEPS TO THE SIDE)
or also as we say another darwin award winner.

No surprise there.  We here in WI have a habit of doing stupid things on railroad tracks.  I don't know if it is like this in other states, but for some reason there seems to be a lot of people that get killed by trains here.  Some are genuine accidents and tragic affairs, but most are cases of stupidity catching up with the stupid.

You think this is bad? Just wait until inflation kicks in.....

I don't want to point fingers at the families involved as they mourn, but popular culture has tried to take away all consequences for poor choices.  Then we wonder why the next generation continues to make poor choices.  It's because they haven't suffered and learned not to do dumb things.  Until we reverse this trend, it will only get worse.

I read somewhere that recent research suggests that the part of the brain that is used to express good judgment is one of the slowest to develop and that in fact our capacity to use good judgment is not fully formed until our mid to late 20s!.   If true, this explains a whole host of things.

And as it happens, newspaper reports indicate the "victim" juimped on the tracks and pointed his finger -- the middle one -- at the crew immediatly before beng clobbered.

Gesture notwithstanding - more and more of these incidents seem to be taking on the same flavor.

One of the folks that volunteers with me on our tourist line just gave me some video he had gathered together.  Leading it off was the routine about people who get hit by trains...

I wonder where that finger ended up....or perhaps I should ask WHAT that finger ended up...

The engineer, upon seeing the gesture of friendliness, probably thought, "OK, wiseass, here's a drawbar up your..............SPLAT!

Way back when i was a bridge operator i would see fisherman walking across the bridge. Of course they had their takle bait poles.  Then a light engine move would come at them at 30mph. These guys would first freeze then they  would stradle the bridge frame to avoid being bait themselves. I will never understand people walking down the middle of tracks. We live in a culture of if i break a leg breaking into your house i can take you to court! As Louis Armstrong sang 'What a wonderful world"  Enjoy trains safely!

Chad, you're very correct there. Ky. has just as many crazies as anywhere else. The Louisville area
alone has had several of these instances happen this past month;and we just had one happen last
night, where two people walking on the tracks (man & woman) got hit. He's dead, she's in the hospital
near death. Thusfar there's been no explanation as to why,and will probably never be.

Being Crazy, keeps you from going "INSANE" !! "The light at the end of the tunnel, has been turned off due to budget cuts" NOT AFRAID A Vet., and PROUD OF IT!!

According to the FRA's safety data there are just under 900 casualties per year of tresspassers, with just under 500 of them fatal. That works out to 2 &2/3ish/day with roughly 1.4 fatalities/day.

Now it has happened again in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

A man wearing headphones was struck by a train that was traveling at 35 miles per hour.

The engineer blew the horn, but the man did not move out of the way.

What might be needed is a graphic television, video game, and movie series about people being injured and killed after making mistakes around tracks and trains. Special effects and visual effects could really bring home the message: "Look and Listen around the Railroad".

We had that happen here except no deaths.

A kid was walking on the tracks with his headphones on loud while Q125 was right behind him blowing the horn. The engineer decided he isn't going to hear my horn so put on the emergancy brakes. No injurys except derailed baretables.

About a month ago, a girl was killed in LaGrange IL, by a METRA train.. (suicide by rail)  That one aside, there is way to many people who just don't get it.

Of course, we can talk to these people until we are blue in the face....some will listen, others won't and they will pay the price.  If there is one thing that I have learned in all of my life in Public Safety, there is a select percentage of the population, who don't "get it" and never will, and ultimately, pay the ultimate price.....

" I don't give a hoot about what people have to say, I'm laughing as I'm analyzed" What if the "hokey pokey" is what it's all about?? Quoted by Railfan619:

Then Quoted by Fuzzybroken:
