TRAINS New Logo Poll coming in Monday's TRAINS Newsletter!
Posted by Angela Pusztai-Pasternak on Friday, August 25, 2006 11:15 AM
Hello!

I just wanted to alert everyone about an opportunity you will have as recipients of the TRAINS newsletter. You can submit your vote on the new TRAINS logo which will appear on our January 2007 cover. Don't worry! The inside of the magazine will have all the great news and stories you know and love. So, please help us out and tell us what you think by filling out the survey in Monday's newsletter.

Thanks!

I didn't vote for either.  I like the current one better than both options presented and commented to that in the survey.

I liked the "slanted" version...attracts teh eye better, where as the straight logo just looked like a lable.

If I HAVE to choose, the slanted one... but I like the current one.

Deleted the e-mail...crap, I didn't even look at it! Oh well. I vote nothing. Trains is changing their logo AGAIN??!? They changed it to what it is now in January 2002, that was just about 5 years ago. Whatever it is, I'll get used to it, but for pete's sake!

Long live the BNSF .... AND its paint scheme. SchemerBob

I would very much like to see the editors of Trains Magazine go back to using the old masthead, the way it was way back when David P. Morgan was the editor, white block lettering against a red background. Right now I detest the way "TRAINS" is splashed across the front cover. It does nothing for me. It was good enough back then, and those who succeeded Morgan as editor should have left it alone.

Yes the nature of a logo is that is should remain constant and stable, so it gathers stature and strength.  Anyone who thinks a logo should be updated every few years to keep up with fashion does not understand logos.  Too much logo changing damages your brand.

Without going into detail, I feel the same way about the format of the contents. I see lots of empty space and redundancy.

I couldn't agree more. Has anyone else noticed how junked up the front of the magazine is getting. If you want to see a webcrawler turn on the TV. Other than the above I have no strong feelings on the subject.

I would take either one but chose the straight because it is reminiscent of the classic Trains magazine logo.  And that's a good thing.

Both are better than the current one. Could they be made smaller, more like the old DPM logo ? I would like to enjoy the cover photograph, but there is so much clutter on the cover.

   Angela;

First of all, Thanks for asking us our opinions here on the Forum!

We have plenty of thoseSmile,Wink, & Grin [swg].

As expressed by some of the other posts, I am of the 'if ain't broke, don't fix it' school.

My question is why change it now?  The magazine seems to work pretty well, the last issue, in my opinion being an excelent read.  The current masthead is highly recognizable in its target market. Are you going to re-jigger the content, and regular colums, or just the masthead?

Thanks,My 2 cents [2c]

I liked the old school logo, too, I like "throwback" jerseys, espically the San Diego Chargers light blue, with all the lightning on the pants and the white "lightning" helmets. After that there's the "Patriot Pete" New England Patriots' look with red jerseys, white helmets with "Pete"on them. But they won those Super Bowls with "Elvis" helmets on Sign - Off Topic!! Yeah, it's probably in my e-mail that I had deleted last week, and I may not have it in my trash either. Thanks for letting me know I missed it, guys.

In light of recent trends, perhaps TRAINS should re-design its logo to "speed lettering" and add a thunderbolt under the nameDisapprove [V]

I opt out of any newsletters, I have enough trouble reading my normal E-mail.

I really liked the look of the July issue with the red background to the existing masthead. With the blue Conrail loco, it showed up really well. It did remind me of the old logo from DPM's time but in a current form. In general, not having seen the proposals, I think italic lettering would be good, white on a red background. Model Railroader has kept the basic logo for at least forty years, white on blue and is still as successful as ever. I think the lettering should be horizontal, not slope upwards at present, and this will allow more photo area.

Isn't that option "B" very similar or identical to what they once used in the past?  Boy that was an easy choice for me.  I look at "B" and I feel relaxed by the sense of order, like a string of standing freight cars.  I look at "A" and it seems jumpy or squirrly.  It almost remids me of a derailment.  The difference is like day and night.  It will be interesting to see the poll results.

I went for the straight lettering. It reminded me of the Trains logo in the 1960s .In my opinion the articles were more in depth and covered more detail of railroading than today's magazine. The magazine now seems to skip over the surface and only cover the high spots.
