Wouldn't it be 1989? That's why 1988 has already come out, they're doing them in order. All I know is what UP tells me.

Well I thought they were to be numberd for the year the RR was merged. The year DRGW bought the SP was 1987. Go figure.

Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad
Denver & Rio Grande incorporated in 1870 to build south from Denver as 3-foot-gauge. D&RG leased the affiliated standard-gauge Rio Grande Western, building southeast from Salt Lake City, in 1882. Dotsero Cutoff opened in 1934, forming connection with Denver & Salt Lake; D&SL merged on April 11, 1947. Denver & Rio Grande Western was acquired by Philip Anschutz in 1984. On August 9, 1988, Anschutz bought Southern Pacific and adopted that name as the operating label for the combined system.


Sounds to me like it was in 1988, but they already have a unit numbered that, so like the 1983 they went to the next year.

All the Heritage units have silver trucks and fuel tank. But a D&RGW passenger scheme would be sweet.

The engine NEEDS to be the freight scheme, it just NEEDS to be! Black and orange with the tiger stripes on the nose and the Rio Grande lettering...no more and no less! And they should leave "UP" off of the cab in front of the road number. Make it as original as possible, please!! You can always hope, at least! [:)]

Are you guys kidding? We have the D&RGW freight scheme any time we want. It's called the Wheeling & Lake Erie! It's exact save for the road name.

The only black paint scheme that was actually good was the Northern Pacific's final freight scheme. So until the MRL resurrects that, I'll take a UP heritage locomotive in a vintage F-unit scheme, if you please.

I think the black loco with large orange speed lettering wouldn't look right on silver trucks. I'm sort of looking foward to a Aspen Gold with four black stripes (aka 1951). But that is probably too old. The "current" passenger scheme at the merger, used on the ski train, was Aspen Gold with a silver sash along the bottom separated with a single thick black stripe.

I'd like to see them do something cool with the logo that has the mountain in it. If it's similar to the other units, perhaps DGR&W Gold in the front, some transistion element from their mountain logo in the middle, and then black or silver behind that. [2c]

FYI - The engine is here in Denver (still under wraps) and has been here since at least late Wednesday afternoon. It is attached to three business cars and a baggage power car.
