For crying out loud......

If it is still in CNW paint, it is a CNW to me, if it still in Conrail paint, it is still a Conrail to me! I grew up in the later days of Conrail and am 13 now and you dont hear me flipping out whenever I see a patched Conrail.

They're all around. I see a Conrail with a black on white or white on black - NS patch and in all honesty, I dont care. I see a Conrail with orange numbers and dont care.

Now I see where you're coming from that you're sad about one of the last three unpatched CNW units has just been patched. I know that UP hasn't done a lot of good in their years and I also know they have. They're thinking about the CNW just as much as you along with the rest of the railroads they aquired, why are they making a CNW heritage Unit?

Now, one thing that will set me off with the UP is if they aquire CSX and patch CSX's Dark Futures with huge ugly yellow patches and make a *** CSX heritage Unit! Then I will dread the thought of going to my local CSX hotspot, knowing I'll see those armour yellow engines!

I kind of know the feeling though, I do miss the Conrail a little bit and do hate to see some of Conrail's greatest units like the SD80MACs or even the C40-8Ws with patches. CSX has 5 unpatched CR C40-8s.

NS has probably about 6 or 7 unpatched Conrail C40-8s. Anyways, just my opinion.

When FEC switched from red/yellow with silver stripes and black cat's whiskers to solid blue I too was disappointed. I chose to model that time period . Since the real ones were painted I could now enjoy the smaller versions I owned. They can never be taken away no matter what the railroad does. That's why many model steam and older passenger cars. They are gone but not forgotten. Maybe adding model trains might help. Railfanning and modeling are not mutually exclusive. Good Luck and you may need to adjust your medication. Not taking any. It might be time to start.[:-^]

modelling would be fun if i had that kind of money. i dont argue about the high prices for such locomotives, but i cant pay them.

You can get unpowered and undecorated athern cheap. Paint um any color you want and they look great on a mantle or shelf. Try it. You'll like it. Keeps the mind off the bummers of reality too.[^][:)] I don't call them gone now the're [angel]'s.

Look at the top of the page.

Click on Garden Railways.

Put a post up to ask for the Best Chicago & North Western Large Scale Diesels.

Garden Railway sized models can come in very large proportions. It is as near as someone can get to taking home the real units.

You could always build a large scale version of the 1950's C&NW as a display for a local Historical Society or a School.

For a few dollars more they come "decorated" or painted and the only way to ruin them is if your little brother/sister eats them. Google model trains CNW or post at MR site. You'll be okay. Everyone before you has gone thru this too. The little one's cost less than the big ones.

They probably meant it would be half/half of two different CNW schemes, much like the MoPac engine was.

Ya,so,what's your point.

My point was that I'm trying to put a little humor in a situation within which I have no control over the outcome-aka I don't have any say as to what UP does with their property. I'll miss the units when they're gone but I won't jump off a bridge. I have photos, my HO scale layout, and memories to keep me happy when that time comes.

I guess I should feel fortunate that I got a pic of 8575 at Bailey yard in North Platte back around easter. I also have a pic with 8572 before it was patched pulling a manifest with a WC SD45 in east Texas. I couldn't get a pic of the last unpatched AC44. i was driving on I-70 when it went past as part of a mid-train helper.

what good ol'days are you referring to? CNW spartan cabs are gone and will never come back [V] how many of UP's units are ex CNW? any of the SD60s? those were my favorite CNW units. there's just something about an SD60 in CNW paint i liked. if i had money, skills, and room to build a layout, then yes i would build one and run all kinds of CNW and WC locomotives on it. all kinds of fallen flags. i refuse to believe the half halfd heritage unit is true. i'm gonna guess it's gonna be the lightning stripe or maybe the scheme of one of their F units?

No Offense or anything, but you've carried on this rant about the CNW Spartan cabs for several pages now. If it really bugs you that much to adapt to change, I think you had better take one of two courses of action:

1) Join the CNW Historical society. It's probably the closest you'll come to living in the past.

2) Find a different hobby that's a little more stable. Maybe stamp collecting? I don't do as much as I used to, but no one can take away my stamps (with some dating to the 1850's, some Confederate States of America stamps, a British stamp dating to the 1840's, a nice Canadian collection, etc.) They'll exist as long as I want them to.

Again, I don't mean any offense by this...it's just getting a little old to hear how the CNW Spartan cabs don't exist every 3 or 4 messages.

none taken. i welcome notifications that i'm flying off the handle. i do it a LOT. since you're sick of it, this will be my final post on it. i never thoroughly explained it.

i am constantly told not to be so upset about this because there are still 2 crash 9s left. that means nothing to me. the widenose cab is ugly. no matter what paint scheme you give it. though i admit the SD70ACE looks nicer and i kinda like it. maybe it's the headlights being moved back to the top rather than in the nose. i never liked that look. and i dont like crash 9s. GE's widenose cabs are by far the ugliest of them all. however i look at this from the other side of the arguement too. do i want crews to be safer? YES! who wouldnt? but that doesnt mean i have to like the widenoses. but with the last of CNW and the heritage unit being widenose, there's nothing for me to not be upset about.

i have other hobbies, but trains were my very first interest. i was 3 when i started to like trains. and i continue to enjoy trains. sadly, it was CNW that i watched all that time. so for me, it's very hard to say goodbye. yes i plan on making a massive CNW layout soon. maybe add some UPs in with my custom paint scheme i made up for them (painting the whole cab grey so it's not so boring). but i cant for many years. until i have a basement of my own so that i may build the layout there.

it all boils down to the sad reality of things. all the trains you saw as a child are gone and will never return. it's like losing a friend you've known all your life. and it hurts. believe me, it hurts.

in short, from my POV, when 8575 went down, all that was left of CNW went with it. it will be a long time before i can get over this[V]

The "Good O'le Day's" are anytime in the past that people sit around and reminise about. Like when you say " Boy I sure miss those CNW spartan cabs. I liked them alot better than those danged o'le Crash9's. Etc. Etc." Except most poeple don't whine about them [:(] [B)] [%-)] Are you starting to see a trend develope here.

What exactly is a spartan cab anyways? The Good Ole' Dys were when DMIR gave you a pass into their largest yard, or when SD38-2s were the Norm.

E-unit with each railroads colors and train names on a drum head. The smell of coal smoke. All engines had 4 axels. 2 leading and 2 driving. They were listed as a 4-4-0. Five foot guage. How far back should I go. Somebody somewhere misses them. [:(][angel][%-)]

a spartan cab is a cab design also referred to as "Standard cab". at least i think. maybe just the GE standard cabs are called that, but when i mentioned them, i was referring to the SD45s and SD60s. oh i love SD60s. UP still uses 'em. 'course they're never in Altoona. ever. then again, nothing comes through. i think it was right about the time the merger happened when rail traffic there declined. *** UP...

at any rate, we're not in the good ol days anymore. but i have taken what copcar said and gave it some thought. will UP ever bring them back? no way. is there anything i can do to bring them back? not for a very long time. should i join the historical society? ehhh i cant afford it yet. but i want to.

there's one hope left. museums. they can paint their locomotives any color they want. maybe some day, a railroad museum in Chicago will get an SD60 and paint it CNW colors.

but my point is my rants and whining will accomplish only pissing you guys off more. so well... i'll just remain patient that my museum theory will one day become true.

and hey, nothing against painting my car like a CNW locomotive[:p]

lastly, dont think you're getting off the hook, UP. i still hate you with every ounce of my strength...

Perhaps you would have preferred UP did not buy them. Like the MILW the tracks were sold for scrap, the cars dispersed to the wind, and all there diesels sold to Larry's Truck and Electric X. They would be be spray painted (CANS) or parted out in about two weeks.. CNW ceased to exsist the day UP bought them. Try to appreciate what you had. Some day younger folks will feel the same about MAG-LEV trains and those sweet BL-2000's. [banghead] [banghead] [banghead] [swg]

I'm cracking up! Seriously! You've really gone off the deep end! And the whole good 'ole days thing....Fine! That's your opinion! But to some of us, these are the good 'ole days! Do us all a favor and take a chill pill. Anybody who feels THIS strongly about a railroad has issues.....

For what? For repainting locos into their livery? Are they supposed to maintain a whole fleet of units in assorted paint schemes. That would be easy and economical. Sheesh, why can't the BNSF bring back Chinese Red, then?

Is it for taking over the CNW? UP controlled the CNW for a long time before they actually took them over, and allowed them to exist quite awhile. If I remember right, the UP only formally took them over right after the BNSF merger announcement. It really was a business decision that was somewhat forced because of the bold BNSF move. Shouldn't the BNSFshare part of the blame, then?

I know I say this a lot, but I STILL don't understand the complete and total animosity directed at Uncle Pete from railfans. Just me I guess.

You're making way too much sense, young man. Off with your head!

oh so the loss of childhood memories is having issues? wow. i'd hate to be normal then. and how are these the good ol days? only 2 CNW units left and variety in locomotive color schemes thinning out rapidly? what exactly is so good about everything being armour yellow with a widenose cab and towing nothing but intermodal? what's the point of railfanning if all the trains look the exact same?
