CNW 8575... UP 9087
Posted by Glen Ellyn on Sunday, June 4, 2006 9:00 PM
I don't know irf all of you knew, but CNW 8575 had a broken fan. This was in April of 2006. It was then taken to a UP shop. Not only did the UP fix the fan, they also patched the last CNW C40-8. The body still has 8575 on it though, but no more symbol. The UP better not patch CNW 8701 and 8646. If they do, they should dedicate a Dash9-44CW to CNW colors as their CNW herritage unit and number it a former CNW number.

That's one ugly locomotive now [V], I guess the CNW paint scheme just doesn't take to an UP patch like a SP [B)].

The news about 8575 is old news now, well at least to those of us who follow the CNW, SP, DRGW, and SSW units.

But the good news is . . . CNW 8701 will hit the railroad tomorrow (Monday). [:D]

oh yeah. great idea. let's honor the loss of the last dash 8 by bringing more POS crash 9s back. how does that have ANYTHING to do with 8575?

what's the good news in that? 8701's a stupid junky old crash 9. just an ugly pile of scrap metal with little CNW heritage in it at all. the sooner that POS rolls over into a ditch, the better. 8575 was all that we had left. and now it's gone

Dude, there are two GE C44-9W's left in full, unpatched, and vitually unaltered CNW paint. Their numbers are CNW 8646 and CNW 8701. CNW 8646 is now en route to North Platte, Nebraska and the 8701 is in North Little Rock, Arkansas, and is hopefully going to a northbound run to Chicago on what will probably be a manifest. It was released from the Jenks shops there today.

From what I heard from other railfans 8575's paint started fadeing along with the logo and they were glad to have it patched with that kind of paint better to have it clean and shiney not fadeing.

Well the logo was white. the good thing is that the #8575 is on the side(s) of the engine.

I'd actually prefer it not to be patched, but hey that's just me. Granted, the paint was getting quite faded, but tons of C&NW engines' logos went to white after a few years while still in original service. It's strange that the logos on the Dash 9s (and formerly the AC44s) are still intact, but not the Dash 8s or many of the (long-since repainted) former traditional yellow EMDs.

no. all patches are ugly and insulting to see. and excuse me, but i LOVE zito! it's my favorite CNW color ever! old yellow and traditional yellow look too similar to armour yellow

No--actually, they have some UP gray in the center roof section. However, they're both still in CNW numbers. The 8701 survived its trip to the North Little Rock shops unscathed--I suspect that it could have been fully repainted, if some people had had their way.

So anyone know when the one of the unpatched CNWs will be on the point of a train in Chicago or even just in the midwest? I missed them the last time the came through Chi-town and would really like to see one of them before they are all gone.

Thank you !!!

What's really crazy is that I saw two patched CNW's (8708 and didn't catch the second) on an empty coal run headed up the Moffat line today. Don't see many of those out this way.

no. they're gone. the patch kills it. ruins the awesome green cabs and eliminates the cool logo CNW had. i have said it many times. UP needs to seriously rethink their scheme. the armour yellow overwhelms the unit and makes it look dumb and unpainted. the all green cabs on the CNW units balanced the color perfectly. now that ugly patch throws the color off. farewell, spartan cab CNW.

this is enough to make me want to quit railfanning[:(]

Aw, c'mon, just change your focus a little bit. Start chasing shortlines, regionals, and industrial operations, you'll find that's a lot more fun than chasing most of the Class 1s anyways... Besides, the CNW just wasn't the same once they started hacking away most of their system, not to mention getting rid of all their old oddball power -- like the Baldwin Geeps!

But alas, I was too young to have seen it in person, much less photograph any of it...

For what? For repainting locos into their livery? Are they supposed to maintain a whole fleet of units in assorted paint schemes. That would be easy and economical. Sheesh, why can't the BNSF bring back Chinese Red, then?

Is it for taking over the CNW? UP controlled the CNW for a long time before they actually took them over, and allowed them to exist quite awhile. If I remember right, the UP only formally took them over right after the BNSF merger announcement. It really was a business decision that was somewhat forced because of the bold BNSF move. Shouldn't the BNSFshare part of the blame, then?

I know I say this a lot, but I STILL don't understand the complete and total animosity directed at Uncle Pete from railfans. Just me I guess.

Allan,

Do you ever get tired of rippin' on the UP? Come to think of it, don't you remember that even our fearless leader addressed the issue last month:

Seriously dude, The caps are getting annoying. you CAN shut it off. If you can't, get a new keyboard. If that doesn't help. You need too figure out what wrong with your computer, becasue it shouldn't do that.

It is sad that the CNW units are dwindling. However, this thing about the whole UP being stupid for painting THEIR property. Remember, as much as we love them, it is UP's business to do what they want with their things. What if I were to call you stupid for cutting your grass? I think it looks better a foot long. All you were doing was trying to make your place look better by altering the state of your grass. The UP is altering the state of their locos, by making them look like all the others. And by having all thier Locos say UP on the side, it is effective advertising. Why advertise for a Fallen Flag? I do love CNW, And I am sad to see it go, but I knew it was coming, and that none of us had any control over it.

grass grows back, CNW units are dead for good after a patch. apparently you didnt grow up watching CNW locomotives. i even remmeber seeing quite a few high hoods in my childhood. so to me, CNW defines "train". a locomotive with a spartan or high hood cab in the green and yellow colors towing a long line of cars is my deffinition of "Train" at least. i hate seeing all these units go. UP doesnt intend for this, but the're spiting me every time i see a CNW unit with a big yellow patch on the green cab. when i was a kid, i loved both roads the same and was thrilled to see either CNW or UP. but now i hate UP beyond belief.

it's been years now with the same hideous armour yellow now. it's time for change and pizaz. UP should make their scheme look interesting and not put 4 horizontal stripes across every locomotive so it looks bland and unpainted. i proudly wear my CNW hat as i type this rant. so what's left? 2 crash 9s? wonderful. i hate widenoses.... they may be safer, but man are they ugly. why does UP patch these units? CP doesnt patch any of their SOO fleet and CN doesnt patch their WC units. and boy do they ever have problems keeping track of their fleets... think of how much money UP could save by not painting their locomotives aquired from mergers. then maybe they could afford all that stuff they have shortages of. but then again, this IS UP we're talking about...

lastly, look at UP's roster and note the few CNW units on it. then look at their abundancy of SP units on it. yeah, patch CNW and don't touch SP. UP clearly has some issues with CNW

[(-D] I guess I can't have really called myself a railfan all these years! After all, my definition of a "train" involves a steam locomotive on the head end, a caboose on the rear end and a string of 40' boxcars in between. I guess I have to hate all railroads now! And I should've hated them my whole life, too! How dare they even think of running a business instead of pandering to my definition of a "train!"

Love the conspiracy theorey with the SP and CNW units, too. Maybe all the money to be spent on the SP units went to painting the helicopters black or something?
