Those Stars Under Our Names
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, June 1, 2006 7:25 PM
This is a bit off topic but what do those stars mean that are under our names when we post? [%-)]

Inquiring minds want to know. [:D]

Consider blue is my favourite colour, I'm honoured that I have 2 blue stars under mine.

Post count.

1 purple star = 50 posts
2 blue stars = 100 posts
3 green stars = 500 posts
4 gold stars = 1000 posts
5 red stars = 2000 posts

That's all.

Regards

Ed

And that is the rest of the story as Paul Harvey would say.

Thanks Ed, you're a gentleman & a scholar.

Too bad, I like the stars. Maybe they could be an option?[;)]

I really don't look at the stars much. I do look at the post count sometimes, especially if someone is taking on the characteristics of a troll. One post and outlandish claims usually add up to ignore....

Another forum I'm on doesn't use stars, but does use "titles." And it lists the post count. It's not a very active forum, so unless people are posting a lot on the other boards in the "family," the post counts aren't all that high.

Larry

Don't forget that we also have a few "resident" trolls. Sometimes they have several stars and love to stir up trouble. Then we also have a few "mentally challenged" members whose posts are generally like sticking their foot in their mouth and end up either deleted or locked.

I have mixed emotions about the stars. But they have been greately misused in the past by star chasers. As Larry said, sometimes the post count and stars can serve to point out a new troll.

Those of us who have been here for a while usually don't pay that much attention to the stars.

Too true - and we've come to expect it from them. I was referring to those folks who want to stir up trouble but don't want to muddy up their "real" name, so they create a new user, make inflammatory comments, all with about 2 total posts. Most also disappear after they open the hornets nest...

Its like grade school gold stars-aka brownie points for posting.

Nothing is more fairly distributed than common sense: no one thinks he needs more of it than he already has.

I don't have any stars under my name. I do a lot of reading posts, but not much writing. Maybe I'll get one soon - I've made three posts today. Certainly a record for me. Haven't really paid to much attention to the stars, glad you asked.

Chad, think about this: is it possible to respond to threads using only the smiley(sp?)
faces from that web site you have? By that I mean complete senteces composed only of them?

Chad - I was going to 'borrow" your stars, plus add a few more (now also including the 12 added) and start a "star war." But that would just be silly.[:o)]

Nice touch, though...

VSmith - You say I now have a star under my name? Haven't seen it yet, but what I really want to know is - how long did it take for two of our "crazies" to mark up all those beautiful stars? Chad Thomas and Upchuck, are you listening?

You know, I'm reminded of a quote in the Construction Newspaper I read every day at work:

"A little nonsense now and then is cherished by the wisest men." ~Roald Dahl, British Writer

It's good to know that we're all a bunch of wise guys in here! [swg]

Yea Paul, Chris pretty much nailed it. Smart *$$ remarks probably account for about 1/3 of my posts. You know, someone has to lighten things up, especially when the "too serious" crew gets there panties in a wad.
