Jim - before you start riding on Amtrak and picking up your friends, you may want to think about this. Amtrak is due thru Lincoln at 5 am. It comes through most times about 8-9 am. This friend is going to be might irritated if you make her wait in the heat while you dawdle!

Unless you have chocolate cake - (an old posting!)

Yes, the symbol is POTUS, and the secret service does a track check, spikes all the switches on the route, and generaly makes a pain in the keister of themselves.
My suggestion is, before you get to Nebraska,
you stop and pick up Joe and Matt, and the chocolate cake.
If you know what good for you.
Trust me on that one![:D]

O K, with all these sweets I gotta have some milk. We are going to have to stop somewhere and get a cow. (Don't have anymore at the farm in MO.) The forum about horns has a few -- we can get them from it. lol

A) i second ED for president..

B) What do you have to do to get 3 stars again? or how many posts do you need? theres my dumb question.

Also, in the June magazine of Trains, trackside guide Detroit, there is a picture in one of the corners, with a switcher, and at the bottom, there is a small post with a sign on it that sias "DERAIL" or "DRAIL" i don't have the magazine in front of me now... what on earth does that mean.. does that mean if you run the train of the track, there is a chance you might de-rail it?
LOL

like my biology book.. short term side effects: Death...

what a stupid sign! unless i'm missing the point....

Unless they changed since I retired derailos are used mainly on industry tracks, engine service ramps, rip tracks to protect men ans equipment and mainline traffic from runaway cars at a industry.

Hi Kev, a derail is a mechanical device, attached to the rail, that will derail a car that moves or rolls over it.
It is most often found just where ringer1 said, in industries, or sideings that need protection from either car coming in from the mainline, or cars rolling out of the industry or sideing, and fouling the main.
You will also find them at a lot of engine service facilities.
The idea is that if someone screws up, its better to put a car on the ground than into the side of a train.
Have fun camping?
Stay Frosty,
Ed

Well, Kevin stole my thunder, since that was going to be one of my questions. I know what a derail is for, but exactly how does it work? Does it put just part of the car on the ground, straight up, does it possibly tip it over, does it damage the car, and what about an engine? Do they get tangled up in derails? Guess that about covers it.

.....The Derail is designed to guide the wheel up over the top of the rail and put that truck on the ground....I suppose if enough speed was involved it would derail both trucks of a rail car. In almost all cases surely the car will remain upright. I suppose if the speed is slow enough damage will be little or none.

A Derail would derail an engine as well.

Heres another Dumb Question... Curtoesy of me...

The last 3 Train derailments in Quebec were caused by a bad switch, like it was switched the wrong way.

A ----------\-------------------------------------------B
| -----------------------------------------C

Okay.. this drawing is worse then pittiful but it will do.. Train is traveling From position C and is going towards A. the vertical line and the diagonal line indicate that the alternate line is merging with the main line (segment AB) .. so in all 3 derailments.. the switch was the reversed (AB) and the train was comming fromn C and heading to A, yet all three times.. every single locomotive made it over the switch effortlessly.. all the CARS derailed, but all the locomotives... the first one had 2 locomotives, the second derailed train had 4 locomotives, and the 3rd derailed train had 1locomotive.. The only reason i can possibly think of this.. perhaps its because the engines weigh a heck of a lot more then the cars..

and the last idiotic question...

to anyone whose seen Maintenace trucks, CP usually has Chevy 1500's going down the lines. why don't maintenance trucks trigger the RR lights when they are travelling the tracks? Technically, They do cross over the link.. and that should trigger the RR lights..

but it doesn't...

And don't try and tell me that the silver logic boxes can tell the difference.. uh-uh. no way, they can't tell the difference between a train and jumper cabels.. So.. although called logic boxes, they really are quite stupid.. not purpose stupid, but thinking capacity stupid.

Thanks.. oh Ed, camping was great.. i did get attacked by a polar bear though.
