"Hi, I'm Julie, Amtrak's automated agent..."

The lady who is Julie is on Jeopardy, and her name really is JULIE!!! They asked her what she does for a living and she says" I'm the automated voice for a lot of major companies." Then alex asked which companies and she says "You know like Amtrak..." Thats the only one I heard then called Amtrak to see if it was the same, which of course it was. Just thought I'd post that intresting piece of info

I like talking to "Julie" since this means I'm about to take a train trip. But it can also be a bummer when she tells me the Sunset is 9 hours late.

So - how did she do?

I've always thought she sounds kinda cute and perky for an older chick. She can ride my train any time.

Julie is a cutsie sounding dumbell who is hearing impaired.

Amen to that [:)] I think Alex Trebek had it right when he said in response "oh, you're the one!!" while holding his hands up as if trying to strangle her [:D].

When I was watching the show before the introductions were made, when Julie would talk I thought to myself that her voice sounded vaguely familiar, but I couldn't place it. Then during the introduction chat, when she mentioned who she was, I said to myself, "That's where I heard that voice". So of course, I ran to the phone to call Amtrak, just to hear her on the phone while she was talking on the tv.

I was surprised to find out that the Amtrak voice was that of a person; I thought all along that the voice was computer generated

That's funny...I just talked to her on Sunday. She couldn't understand what I was saying while I was on the platform, so I hung up. Luckily for me my train was right on time so it didn't matter anyway.... [:)]

What makes her old or a dumbbell?

I clicked on the link. She does look cute, dresses sharp, looks like she's in her late 30s-early 40s and as typical with a lot of women today, likely has more energy than most guys in their 20s!

I guess I think differently. Even when I was a teen years back, to me women looked more beautiful when they hit their 30s and 40s, their faces were fuller, figures more curvy, and intelligence and self confidence were blooming. I always felt that a lot of the "older guys" that left their wives for "something younger" were too intimidated.

I can speak from personal experience that the "dumbbell" part comes from the fact that the "Amtrak Julie" does not understand what the caller is saying if there is any background noise, so she repeats herself multiple times and you have to repeat your menu commands many times to get the system to understand. That makes the whole automated voice system thing frustrating to use when you have to call it from a noisy environment such as train station platform.

The real Julie is anything but a dumbbell of course, obviously evidenced by the fact that she was a decent-performing contest on Jeopardy.

She can be fairly intelligent...here's the secret: except for the saying the station name, you can use the touch tone keys for entering commands. I just hit "mute" for everything but the station name and it (she) works like a charm.

Usually 1 works for yes, 2 for no, 1 for today, 2 for tomorrow, etc., when given options. Try playing around with it and you'll find it works WAY better. I got tired of yelling into the phone!

I should have been more specifc. I am sure the real Julie is a lovely person. Her computerized clone was the one I was referring to. I have given upon the synthetic version. Even though I am very frustrated after many attempts and variations of talking slowly, making sure every vowel, every nuance is perfect and she still keeps on like a parrot apologizing that she does not understand english, a part of me says, I don't care what technology supposedly improves, they will never replace either the real Julie's native intelligence or, for that matter, our own.

Nothing is more fairly distributed than common sense: no one thinks he needs more of it than he already has.

[:(!] I hate the automated Julie. And I know of at least one family trip that took the bus only because Julie can't understand a [censored] thing.

whenever I call Amtrak, Julie is always friendly with me.
soon as she gives me various options I just say agent
July asks if I want to talk to an agent and I say yes
No problem
