I can speak from personal experience that the "dumbbell" part comes from the fact that the "Amtrak Julie" does not understand what the caller is saying if there is any background noise, so she repeats herself multiple times and you have to repeat your menu commands many times to get the system to understand. That makes the whole automated voice system thing frustrating to use when you have to call it from a noisy environment such as train station platform. <br /> <br />The real Julie is anything but a dumbbell of course, obviously evidenced by the fact that she was a decent-performing contest on Jeopardy.
