What are some of better looking loco's around
Posted by railfan619 on Friday, December 30, 2005 1:51 PM
HI everyone I was wondering what are some of the better looking loco's around from today or even yesterday. For me I have always liked diesels from the early years right on up to today and in fact I like ones that make alot of smoke so you can see them a far away and my second best are the ones that have the loudest horns because. I love to see people jump. But I also do like to see old time steam loco's the big boys are my favorite like. The 4449 or even the 3985 in fact if I could see both of them together it would be a great dream.

For diesels, I'd have to say the Baldwin Shark Nose models.

For steam it's a tough choice, I've had contact with many. I'd have to pick the Nickel Plate Berkshire, having ridden behind the #759 on a trip from NYC to Niagra Falls and back (two days) back in the 60's.

I like the looks of EMD's SD70M with flared radiator housings. Sure UP's got 1,000+ of the beasts, but they're good looking machines, provided they're not from the batch of '70Ms that have the squared off portion on the nose.

GE's AC44CW isn't too bad looking in it's own way either.

Other favs: SD45, SD40T-2, GP40, U36C, U25B, GE's 44 ton center cab switcher, and any number of early diesels from all the major locomotive builders.

One of my all time favorite locomotives is the 2-6-6-6 Allegheny. I have no clue why I am so attracted to that locomotive. I think the reason why I love the 2-6-6-6 so much is because it was built by one of my all time favorite locomotive builders Lima Locomotive Works, and might I say that they did a darn good job with that mountain machine. Also another reason might be because the C&O owned Alleghenys which happens to be one of my favorite roads.

Another one of my favorite looking locos is the SD80MAC, along with the ES44DC, and the SD70ACe.

I personally think most of the second gen. 'long porch' type units had the best look. SD40-2, 38-2, 39-2. I'm warming up to the ACE though.

Lima locomotive Works #1625 is the picture of steam power at it's best . Harnessed to a string of freight cars, at track speed . What an event. I wish i could see one again. Switch8frg. Somewhere in Malfunction junction.

For me, my favorites are the Wisconsin Central SD45s and the F/FP45s. Just the look and the sound of these units is awe-inspiring, and the cowl units looked great in what I call the "dairy bonnet" paint job.

I like the N&W Y6b 2-8-8-2 Mallets for steam power, as well as the DM&IR Yellowstones, just for the raw power.

From the old days, give me an EMD F or E unit, and from the newer days give me an F45 or FP45 or SD45.

I've always been partial to E's and the SD45. But two of my favorites are ones that many people probably have not ever seen. First is UP's DD40A Centenials. It was one of the first with the wide cab, and the pure size of it was inspiring.

Second is the UP Gas Turbines. The had clean lines, brutish size, the tenders blended well with the locomotive, and they made a sound like no other.

And could they pull a train. My grandfather's house sat about a mile from the UP main line up Weber Canyon, the line that they (and the DD40A) were designed for. Of course, my young ears were "tuned", but you could hear one of them coming upgrade from about 10 miles away.

My favorites to look at are the SP SW1500's, SD45T-2: the SD40T-2 of either SP or DRGW, the UP SD40-2, ATSF warbonnets and any Burlington Northern unit painted in the Cascade Green scheme.

Anything that did NOT come out of GE's Erie plant...........ALL THE GE'S ARE CRAP!
This excludes the FM Erie Builts and very early EMC units.

The above locomotives came out of the GE Erie plant , as did it's predecessors in 1915.
As for the Erie builts... they didn't last long did they ?
