Why Are There No Polls Here?

Has it ever occured to you guys that this doesn't have a option to post a poll?
When I'm on Model Railroader's forum there is an option to post a poll.
Why not here?
If you know what I'm talking about, we should ask if we can get a poll option.

Because people were abusing the poll option.

Perhaps if the information gleaned had some useful purpose the poll option might be meaningful. They quickly can become a place to vent and the information goes nowhere. Yawn.

Yeah, I remember the poll disaster. I don't think they are needed anyway.

Really, there's only 2 kinds of polls we need: north and south. Maybe if we had telephones here then we would have polls. But until then the poll option has been vaulted. So watch out for the polecat.

My experience is, that on forums,(no matter what type of forums), polls generally serve very little purpose except as the catalyst for world class spitting contests. If you think I'm wrong, look at some of the polls on forums, and the kind of conversations they spawn. It's usually not pretty, or usefull. If you're really interested in people's opinions on something, why not come right out and ask? Isn't that what forums are for?[:)]

... and other forum issues...

Why is it, when I "subscribe" to a topic on this forum, that it only tells me once that there has been a reply? Only way to get it to work again is to unsubscribe and re-subscribe, which is usually not worth the effort. Is there some way to fix this?
(Oh wait, I just looked up Snitz.com, and their forums are ASP... asp = Windows = things don't work right anyways...[}:)])

Of course my last comment was made in jest, but it would be really nice to get this feature working properly. I post on another forum that uses phpBB, their topic-subscription works flawlessly, and yet another forum switched from phpBB to vBulletin, which doesn't seem to have the subscription working at all...

Interesting comparison. The reason there are no polls on this forum is very much like the reason there are no poles in new fire stations - people tend to get hurt.

I don't think we even need telephone polls here either. I'm sick of them falling down all the time. I think we should have underground lines, in untility tunnels or something like that. I know here in Philadelphia that would be a good option, due to the fact that there are many sub levels here in the city. One level is called street level, then you have the transportation level (subway), and (tunnels), then you have the water lines (sewer), then you have the access tunnels (acesses the main bridges, ventalation systems of the various tunnels, then there is the utility tunnels).

I'm glad this topic was started because, I didn't understand until now as to why there aren't any polls here in the trains mag forums, now I know. Interesting...........................

I agree 100%. With very few exceptions (i.e. - Eric & Mike Photo competition), I try to avoid poll threads. They seem to be of no value other than to the pollster....and I question that at times.

Exactly. That's why I said "...and I question that at times." I am willing to give the pollster the benefit of the doubt and say there is value. But even if and when there is, seldom does the polster actually explain why the poll is necessary and/or what the perceived result/value was.

Unfortunately, it's a "toy" that some people use in place of more meaning statement or discussion. Okay, I'm down off my soapbox. I'm convinced anyone who reads this far into the thread knows where I stand on polls.

Time for my meds, anyway.

ENOUGH !! Forums are for the free expression of opinion regardless of how off he wall(or rail in some cases) that an opinion is. POLLS more often than not tend to threaten that special mutual freedom that is permitted in such an envrionment as this one. Polls also tend to POLARIZE opinion and more often than not in the best interest of the civility in the forum. (By the way, notice the similarity in the words Poll and Polarize)

Try posting your " POLL " in the form of an intelligent ,well worded, relevant question and you will get a much better response. Many members are able to give you deeper answers than A-B-C-D respones. I hope this helps. ENJOY [soapbox]

The poll system may not be such a bad idea, but there are looming problems with it. As someone stated earlier about polling becoming roughly 1 of every 3 posts - the author search for any new topic & opinions would become ever greater in numbers and equally as trivial per topic, eventually resulting in depreciation of the trains magazine site.

There would have to be a moderator (or moderators) on special assignment to review and either accept or refuse each new generated poll as it presents itself each new day. Who wants that job?? Nobody really wants it.

I agree with you Jim, besides being of questionable value and accuracy, It would really not serve much of a purpose worth the forums time.

Take a look at the trains.com general forum and you will see why they don't have a poll option here.
