Stop-DEATH-Stop
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, May 18, 2003 9:57 AM
I was flipping through my 5/03 TRAINS mag. and I happened to run across a little something on pages 66-67 that I think all of us rail(and non rail) buffs should read. It was litteraly the biggest, and loudest freaking (No pun intended) X-ing sign that Ive ever seen. Equiped with the following; An air raid siren (for all of those who are hard of hearing), BRIGHT neon lights that said STOP-DEATH-STOP, an neon arrow to show the direction of the train( for the visualy impaired),later I-C added an more moderen 2 red flashing lights just below the skull & bones (for the more seriously vision impaired)....And no Im not drunk or making this up! Its freaky but wow its something that would be a great add on to any problem X-ng. Im considering possibly trying to build a model of it for my own trains. In all seriousness; It WORKED and if you got hit on this X-ing then your just either comatose..or a freaking moron!
Its worth the $5 for this photo alone!!!!

give it some time...some meat ball will run it..get killed..and IC or what ever rail road put this in will get sued...along with the crew of the train...
but it makes you wonder how someone that is "vision impaired" got a drivers licence in the first place... i always thought that you needed to be able to see to drive...lol...its kinda like the brail ATM instructions at drive up ATM mechs. makes you think...lol

Its just simple look listen and live.some people just don't get it. I don't work for the railroad but I've seen too many close calls for my taste.People are lucky there aren't any rock island rockets or hiawatha's on the tracks.

What a great way to mark a crossing. To bad some one probably sued to rr for it scaring their children. In my opinion anyone who ran this crossing deserved to have their genes removed from the pool! I said this in an earlier post and got in trouble, but it applies to people who chose to run grade crossings. The world has no shortage of idiots.

You should see the new bill boards in OHIO that say!!!

"BAD CROSSINGS KILL GOOD DRIVERS" big sign showing a delapidated looking old cross-buck at a sight obstructed crossing. Not mad up they are real.

The amasing thing that this crossing was the only one made. If I rember it cost $40,000 to build. And these numbers where around WW2 era. The crossing was built before WW2 and it was torn down in the 70's. No one was intrested in shelling out that kinda $. Back then a new car cost less then $6k!! Ironicly enough we are just now trying to build better safter Xings & equiptment. Its kinda like the old saying "Why re-invent the wheel...." Followed closely by my favorite saying SSS = Sweet, Simple, Stupid aka the DUH factor :)

As to those Ohio billboards (which sound like trial lawyers trying to pre-soften future jury members) there is no real excuse even at the "worst" crossing, good driver or not. Even an unmarked crossing is railroad right of way and the driving public should be expected to react accordingly (stop, look, and listen) -- but human nature being what it is, that STOP - DEATH - STOP crossing would seem to give even the most dense driver no excuses

Why don't you go park your car in one and find out for us. Please report back a.s.a.p. We will be holding our breath. Don't forget to stay in the car to provide us with good scientific accounts of the "bad crossing."

Why would you sign as Dave Nelson when your not THE Dave Nelson?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CIV
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1995 (202) 616-2765
TDD (202) 514-1888

CSX PAYS U.S. $5.9 MILLION TO SETTLE MISCHARGING CLAIMS

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- CSX Transportation Inc. will pay the
United States $5.9 million to settle claims the company
overcharged the government millions of dollars for railroad
crossing signals installed under a federal safety program, the
Department of Justice announced today.
Assistant Attorney General Frank W. Hunger, in charge of the
Civil Division, said the agreement settles claims that CSX
Transportation inflated labor hours for wiring signal houses;
failed to obtain the lowest price possible from third-party
vendors for parts; and overcharged for certain parts by selling
them at a profit to third-party vendors, then repurchased the
parts and charged the United States the higher repurchase price.
Funds for the railroad signal crossing equipment, which were
installed primarily in southeastern states, were provided under
the Rail Highways Crossing Program administered by the Federal-Aid
Highway Program of the Department of Transportation. The
federal government provides 90 percent of the money for the
program with the states providing 10 percent in matching funds.
Hunger said A. David Nelson, a former employee of CSX
Transportation, brought the matter to the government's attention
in February 1993, then filed a qui tam suit March 17, 1994, in
U.S. District Court in Jacksonville, Florida, under the False
Claims Act, 31 U.S.C. 3729.
A two-year investigation by the Department of
Transportation's Office of Inspector General and Florida
Department of Transportation confirmed the allegations.
In April 1993, CSX Transportation voluntarily refunded $2.1
million to 18 states as an adjustment to amounts billed for the
construction of signals at grade crossings and on January 11,
1995, CSX Transportation agreed to pay Florida and 11 of the 18
states $1.4 million for adjusted costs related to grade crossing
signals.
In addition to the money CSX Transportation has paid the
United States and the states, the company also must absorb all of
its expenses, including legal and accounting costs incurred in
this matter.
The settlement resolves any potential claims by the United
States against CSX Transportation under the False Claims Act for
fraud and under common law concerning allegations of cost
mischarging to the Rail Highways Crossing Program.
Pursuant to the False Claims Act, Nelson will receive
$1,180,000 of the settlement.

You are right why would I sign as David Nelson when I am not David Nelson?
The answer is that I am David Nelson. I am one of many David Nelsons meaning I am a David Nelson. I am not however "A. David Nelson" who filed the qui tam action referred to in the article you reproduce. (Qui Tam means, more or less, that a prviate individual sues someone more or less on behalf of the government).
There are several other David Nelsons that I am not, but I am the David Nelson.

The only place you will find it is in the pea brain of the joker who said there was such a sign.

http://www.pinnaclewebs.com/railroadimages/aars-478.htm Now the Deaprtment of Education use to run the Operation Lifesaver smoke screen but if you really check the numbers it is as bad today or worse than way back when.

Wow.. somone from the Head Trains magazine should have a look at these stats i just figured out.

In canada.. a subscription to the magazine is 40.00 American, which intern equals about..60.00 Canadian for 12 issues. now i pay 6 bucks a month for this magazing. so 6 dollars X 12 magazines = 72 dollars. so all i'm saving is 12 dollars... HMMMMMMM i don't know.. i'm not sure if the Trains Magazine Dept. has thought that one out long enough.
12 bucks is almost nothing. (not exactly the 40% advertised)

Kev.
