Ya know - Mr. Z's new friend might not scream, but I'll bet she "whoops" a lot...

I can sympathize with his plight. Despite a long-time affection for a relative of his "certain person," I've lately found myself drawn to an old smoker who burbles. It's not an easy situation to deal with, although I am trying (very, according to some friends).

Mz Mook - your advice was very good and I shall attempt to apply it to my situation as well.

Jim, watch out!

I've been told that your new E(e)rie friend shakes, rattles, and rolls...and smokes a lot in an effort to cure the shakes.

I've heard a thing or two, mostly positive, about a gal in Boise. Not too popular yet, but has taken a lot of people for a ride.

You also know about her? I knew she gets around a lot, but gee.......

Even tree68 knows about her propensity for 'whooping' at certain times, which I found a bit distracting at first, but eventually got used to it. She just does that occasionally to get herself pumped up.

The one thing which bothers me about her is that she takes so long to get excited. Even if you tickle her throttle all the way to her maximum position, she takes what seems like forever to get going. But when she finally does get fully excited, there's practically no stopping her (which is a good thing).

Dear Mz. Mookie;
I gravitate to this forum because I enjoy trains, and railroad related stuff. I is all very interesting. But of late it seems that some folks can turn any subject into a political diatribe. At first this turned me off, but of late, it is like going to see a bus wreck, the carnage and damage is somehow facinating. It is sort of like a vent for social frustration instead of direct action like the postal workers are prone to do. Is this a good thing?

Sam: If you can't talk football, I guess you talk politics! At least the people here can't go "Postal"!

I imagine some of the people end up with marks on their throats that they can wear as a badge of honor.

Since big business and Amtrak are all political in many ways, you won't avoid it. But you are right - they ignore the little practical questions that beg answers and discussion and go directly to the "dog fight"! There are only a few really great minds on here that will do both. And a few lofty individuals that would never stoop to answering mundane questions.

Human nature at work.

So very true, I seems that some folks would rather spout their opinion than listen to another's side of the discussion. Their minds are made up and reason will have no audience. Thanks, Mz. Mookie[:D][:D][:D]

Okay...
After the reading the "Female Hobbies" thread, it occurred to me we need an advice column type thread...

And who better the edit such a thread then Mrs. Mookie!...

After all, she has the knowledge, and something that seems to be lacking other places...common sense mixed with good advice.

Ed

I resurrected this thread just for the fun of it, as it seems like we need to have a place to go for certain types of issues.

So, Jen, is the doctor still 'in'?

Oh Zardoz - I am so Blush to realize that this went on for 5 pages.  But being a little older and if not wiser, at least a little quieter, I am always open to questions, within reason.  I also reserve the right to ask one back, too!  Shy

Q - the wiser part sez - you need to "Ask Willy" since he is the meteorologist-in-training and would be more accurate than I.  However, I will be sending you at least 1 more perfect day after I get done using it.  Should get there in about 6 mos.  I have a lot of use for it!

In our local yard, and on through BNSF trains, it seems all I ever see are a bunch of those Cascade Green BN engines, and blue/yellow ATSF engines.  Of course, some of the grain trains will also have locomotives from all the Class 1's and the Canadian and Mexican roads as well.  So, why do I have to look at all this variety, and hardly ever get to see those attractive Pumpkin Orange BNSF units?  Heck, for the last week, the yard crew has been using a green GP 30 for switching.  That hardly seems fair.  What's a fella to do?

As we speak:  BNSF has finally come to their senses and are gathering up many of the Ugh Orange units and hiding them behind our depot!  My guess is that they will be glad to send them  to your yard and to anyone else that has a burning desire to experience the thrill of a major PR screw up.

We still have the BN green engines, the blue/yellow ATSF, we actually did see two CN engines race through here the other day and GP38s were spotted just this last weekend, leaving town  Lest we forget - we also have SW10 and SW15's still doing switching.

So I will close with a thank you for asking and neener, neener......

Dear Mrs. Mookie,

I received an e-mail from my sister today, saying that people were picking on her. Then, after a prolonged absence this evening, I returned to find a similar thing mentioned in this very thread. Ready to defend her honor at just about any moment, I continued to look for the alleged provocation, so I could prepare an appropriate response.

However, it appears to me that any efforts along those lines would be superfluous--my sister is handling everything very well all by herself. So should I tell her that I'm still available as a reference point and as a character reference (yes, folks, my sister is a character!)? Or am I going to have to come out there?

     Dear Mrs.  Mookie

Since the weather has finally turned nice, we can sleep with the windows open at night.  Birds chirping / soft breezes / nature and all that junk.  Since we live less than a mile from the BNSF yard,  I can hear the trains running all night.  It's a familiar pattern. I can hear the horns clearly, as they blow for the crossings coming through town to the yard, then as they leave town in the other direction.  There's at least 2 locals, that usually start early in the day, and come home late in the evenings sometimes.  I can hear the local switch crew around town, picking up and delivering cars to various industries.  Add to that, the local quarry train hauling gravel and cement accross town, and the rock trains hauling big, pink rocks through the center of town.  Best of all,  I can hear the long distance trains coming through town.  Typically, I suppose, they are grain and ethanol trains.  From the sounds of their engines, I can get an idea of how heavy, and therefore how long the trains are.  I've gotten pretty good at recognizing the different horns as well.  I can just imagine myself on one of those trains, heading off into the night-ahhhhh...

So,  how do I get my wife to stop snoring?  And don't suggest that rolled-up sock routine.  That's just some sort of old wive's tale.

Dear Mrs. Mookie,

Murphy Siding, in South Dakota, has weather warm enough to sleep with the windows open? He must sleep under many blankets.

I write to ask if you know any way to keep my wife from waking me up because she says that I am snoring. I have trouble believing her because I do not hear any snoring.

Wow - mailbox full.  Must reply brief o/w locked due to size!  So many probs, so little time....

BC - married both husbands (1 ex & dec'd; other in good shape) both w/x-dry sense humor.  Seems to have rubbed off.  Holding own.  Need help sort yard.  Avail 5/2?  Bring Pat.

Dogresidence - no, but bless you 4 thought.  Donate direct to Visa bill.

Murph - think aboot it!  If you hear all that @ nite, you ain't sleeping.  Her noise - see below.

Johnny - real name?  Disapprove  (note to self suggest better name - "Ramrod", "Toast Point", "Bergie" avail soon) Ah - Murph may live SoDak, but nearby New Brass Key - real windows open, sheet only, ceiling fan on "oh my gosh it's hot in here" and south wind going to SoDak (completely missing north sleep bedroom!)

Snoring - big domestic problem.  Everyone makes noise when sleeping.  Women purr.  Men make a Dash9 sound like Brahms.  However, true indicator that person is still alive and still sleeping next to you....think about it.

In Johnny's case, it is "wife alert".  As we (ahem) seniorize, we need to keep moving.  Night is no exception (TURN OVER!)

Next?

Mookie
Johnny - real name?

Yes. I was baptized "John," but went by "Johnny" until I finished my formal education (my college president spelled it "Johnnie," but I did not complain; my physics professor spells it the same way). I thought I should go by the shorter form to add dignity. When I realized that I had no dignity, I began introducing myself as "Johnny," and more people call me that now. It was pleasant to be so addressed last Saturday at the alumni gathering at college (two called me "Younger" (the proper spelling is "t/y"), for "Degges the younger". My wife's first husband's name was John, and he went by that always, and I introduced myself to her as "Johnny," not knowing his name; it has worked out quite well.

I don't think that telling my wife that my snoring should assure her that I am alive and beside her will help.

Johnny, you'll have to resort to the method my wife and I have adopted- since the kids have moved out, one of the other bedrooms is now a "guest room", where I regularly spend the night and hence we both get a good night's sleep.  You'd be surprised at how many older couples do this...

You may have to show us how to do it at your yard, but we'll do what we can! Pat might be able to help with needling the Driver, too.

As I may have mentioned to you earlier this month, I had an "Over and out" experience in Muscatine. Still recovering. Oh--we've given up on each other...it's just a friendly competition that neither of us hears, if we're lucky!
