So just for clarifictaion (and to give this thread meaning) what is considered flaming. Is politic always flaming, or just when some chuckle-head starts calling you names?

Well James, my understanding of what Bergie has posted in the past (like before you even joined) is, things like name calling and general fighting is not OK. Religion and politics are generally not cool, though politics on the Trains Magazine forum is better tolerated, than on the other forums, so long as it is germain to the train theme, and not just Republican vs Democrat bickering. I also have it on first hand experience that swearing is totally off limits. Isms like racism, sexism, etc are also bad.

I think part of where you get into trouble is when someone says something you don't agree with. Instead of ignoring it or respectfully disagreeing, you latch on like a pit bull, and the war of words starts. Most of the time it continues until somebody stops it. I stepped in the other night, and thought things were calmed down. I went out and mowed my lawn and went to dinner, and it started up again. That's when I turn to Bergie for a solution.

I'm not sure why you do this, but a couple of things come to mind. One possibility is you believe very strongly in things and are willing to defend your position to the death. Another is, you like getting a rise out of people, which is one of the definitions of trolling. I hope I don't need to remind you of the Dennis B incident.

Everyone here needs to remember that we are guests of our host, and our host is a company whose business is selling train related publications. They are very fair and liberal about what we can say, but there are limits.

Bottom line, have fun, but do it in a respectful manner, and nobody will bug you.

No, not some enjoyment out of arguing, I just can't stand it when people start saying things totally oposed to the way our country was founded[:D]. Yeah, I believe it strongly[:)].[?] So why is it my fault, the ones who latched on like a pit bull, were jeaton, and vsmith[?] At that point I just refused to back down, though I could have dropped it.[}:)] You will notice at the end who started the real name calling.[xx(]

Um......had you considered trying to sort of limit yourself to talking about trains, since this is, after all, a train forum? I enjoy your train trivia posts. Most all of your posts that involve trains are interesting and entertaining too. However, when a post turns political,it generally turns ugly. You do have a choice to talk about trains, or fight the same fight, over and over about politics. The "he started it" defence by you, or anyone else is immature,at best. Let me clarify: there are hundreds of forums to argue poitics(or religion,or sports, or etc.....), there are fewer to talk about trains. So, let's talk trains.

Thanks

Start a thread about where you live, and what railroad operations are like there, and let this thread die.[xx(]

Ladies and gents:
I am very new to this forum, but I thought I would add my two cents (in todays money that is worth about how many mills) anyway.

Even though my late father said I have two states of mind, apathy and ***ed unreasonable, I think I can add, based on what I have seen at other forums.

If you want to see what moderated, but as loosely as possible brings, go read the Autoweek forum, you will see that todays youth as a whole are lacking in couth.
On the other hand, at road racing forums, moderating has become rather fascist, and where posting was, not as lively as this one, still quite lively, it now goes days at one of the originals where the mod. is the one who has to post a topic or thesilence is deafening.

The one thing that I find--odd--is what Murphy did in the post above this one; now Murphy has been a frequent poster on this one, but in other forums, some one will make the one's, one and only post , "contributing" to the thread, and it is to complain that the thread exists.
Some times the other posters will tell the one, if the one does not like it,do not read it, but too often the complainer will get it shut down.

To me the choice is simple, do as one mod. at Daily Sport Car does, if it is off topic, start a new thread in the proper column, or the more logical choice, if a thread annoys one, simply don't read it.

OK, the owner of my soap box is quickly approaching with a pitch fork, so I gotta run.

RPRiebe: I'm not quite sure I understand the comment about *odd*. My intent was / is to get posters (in this case Lotus098) to redirect focus back to trains. My goal in this is quite selfish: I wi***o read lots of info about trains and railroads.[:)]. For better or worse, I asked him to start a different thread, because sometimes these get so off-topic that I forget what the thread was about.[B)]. How are you coming on finding info on early export diesels?

Murphy, I did not think you were odd, of course...[:p], but at other threads I find it odd, to use a happy word, that some who have not contributed, either way, suddenly butt in and want it closed--this does not apply to you.

The Locomotive International magazine I get has books on early diesels, not US, that looks to be very interesting.
You should check out their website and magazine, with todays dropping dollar it is still comparatively cheap, it covers locomotives that info on is hours of searching on the net, or only found in the odd used book or hobby shop that buys book collections.
Bob
I have not ordered the books yet, but they shipped my magazines in little over a week.
