Cabless Units......
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, April 21, 2005 9:43 PM
1st off a big shout out to all railroaders and railfans. I'm a newbie here and just though I post an interesting topic for once. Is it me or Cab Units just getting old nowdays, last few trips to Rochelle was Cab's'r'Us. Now don't get me wrong when they were first intorduced back in 91? I was a cab fanatic! But after spending some years chasing the IAIS I started gaining more respect for the old paduch geeps and older geeps and its very darn interesting to still see older geeps leading high merchandise freights especially on the old Rock Island.. comments, suggestions welcome................................Peace Will.............[8)]

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS...I agree that wide cab units have become the same as the old "standard" cab units were about twenty years ago, and yes I do somehow look forward to seeing an old SD40-2, especially if it is a NS "high nose" unit.

Hello Will [:)]

The wide cab (safety cab) is now the standard of the industry. However, I doubt we will see an end to the use of the cab units for many years. Along those lines, think about the old "B" units and the hihood units. Now you won't see a B unit on a Class 1 these days but might catch one on a tourist train or possibly a short line. NS DOES however still have some hihood units in use. I saw one here in North Little Rock about 2 weeks ago.

Welcome to the forums, I hope you enjoy them. [:D]

BNSF still runs b-units on their routes.

Yup,
GP60Bs...a few in the Santa Fe Silver/Red warbonnet...and a bunch in the pumpkin paint.
Santa Fe bought them pre merger.
See them down here all the time.

BN had a B30-7A, a cabless B30-7...they had an entire fleet.
Havent seen one of those in a while.
