Question about the UP6936.
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, April 15, 2005 8:25 AM
Does the UP6936 still have 1 or 2 Diesels in Her? Is Her Horsepower still 6,600HP? Will the UP keep Her in service for as long as they own Her?
Thanks.

I am not 100% on this...But I belive she only has one. I read about 10 yrs. ago that she lost one of the prime movers and it is now rated at 3000HP. In the years between they may have restored the other engine, but I doubt it.

Both 645s are fully functional and it is still rated as-delivered at 6600hp. How long will UP keep it in service? That's hard to say but there are alot of folks in the Company that hold it near-and-dear to their hearts; especially the current VP of the Engineering Department.

Can you give us some history on this? I am positive I read where it was only running on one prime mover about 10-15 years ago. Can you enlighten us as to when this happened or if it just was not so?

I spent several years as a shop/service track manager with the Union Pacific RR Mechanical Department. I've personally been in, on and around the #6936. To my knowledge, it has never been packing a 'dead' engine. You may have been reading a blurb about the overhaul of the E-Units at VMV...which I think was around 10 years ago or so now. They had their twin 567s replaced with a single 16 cyl 645.

The E-8's are essentially E-38-2's with all the mechanical parts of a GP-38-2 in a E-8 carbody.

No wounder why the E8's sound like a GP instead of an EMD sound.
