Is Her Horsepower still 6,600HP? Will the UP keep Her in service for as long as they own Her?
Thanks.
Both 645s are fully functional and it is still rated as-delivered at 6600hp. How long will UP keep it in service? That's hard to say but there are alot of folks in the Company that hold it near-and-dear to their hearts; especially the current VP of the Engineering Department.
Can you give us some history on this? I am positive I read where it was only running on one prime mover about 10-15 years ago. Can you enlighten us as to when this happened or if it just was not so?
I spent several years as a shop/service track manager with the Union Pacific RR Mechanical Department. I've personally been in, on and around the #6936. To my knowledge, it has never been packing a 'dead' engine. You may have been reading a blurb about the overhaul of the E-Units at VMV...which I think was around 10 years ago or so now. They had their twin 567s replaced with a single 16 cyl 645.
