Interesting sight today....

Decided to take the dog for a walk this afternoon, well seems there was soem daylight activity on the branchline near my house.

It was at least a 3 engine train (maybe four, i was a bit away when it started over the crossing), First one in line I saw was Unknown (I pretty much almost missed thsi one, Blue with a yellow strip down the middle), Followed by 2 rust buckets, a Southern Pacific and a SOO. Unfortunatly, i was a bit far away, so couldn't catch the numbers of either one.

being a Steam fan (duh), all i can say is they looked like 4 axles, short hoods. Just thought i'd mention an SP unit made it to northern Illinois.

Ok, after a little research and no responses here [:(!], I found the lead engine in this set up was either the IC&E or DM&E (same company, different divisions) class 2 road. Now the question is, do they own the SP and SOO units, or are they leasing them? Also would explian how you are seeing SP's in indiana, since it wouldn't be to hard for them to loan one to a class 2 next door, if they owned one.

Sratch that, found an unofficial roster stating they have SP 8496, an SD40T-2 from GE Capital. no info on the SOO engine though, as it was in original colors and lettering.

What line are you watching. I know the TPW has SP tunnel units that often appear in both Northern Indiana and Northern Illinois.

Just a branch line by my house, i think it belongs to the IC&E, as their system map does show them coming into the city.

ICE does have a bunch of engines that are painted in SP colors, and also several engines that are ex-SOO by way of IMRL (I&M Rail Link, ICE's predecessor).

It seems like they have several ex-SP 7240 series GP40-2s.

LOL, Rockford, ya ninny [:p], and yes it is the line that comes in by US 251(from the south) and onto the Main St. yard.

Seeing as I'm not a Watcher, I just thought it was fun to see an SP unit running through, it still said "Southern Pacific" on the side, but was a it rusty, definatly in need of a paint job.

The DM&E owns a couple ex-CP Rail units that I am aware of, I saw them up in Huron, South Dakota within the last couple years. It is possible that the SOO line unit you saw is owned by the DM&E, or it might be that the DM&E is leasing it. The CP Rail units that I saw up in Huron were SD-40's. The DM&E owns a number of ex-Milwaukee and CN&W engines which I have on video tape, and they are extremely dirty.
