Maybe for you - in my area it is to be the coldest day of the last week with a chance of seeing snow flakes.

We're enjoying a cooler spell for this week, highs in the mid 40's.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Spring has sprung,

The grass is riz,

The leaves have come upon the triz,

I wonder where the flowers is...

Actually, when I walked to the post office this morning all of the dusting of snow we got overnight had melted.  But, while I was reading the paper, it snowed again...

That little poem is older than I am...

Aside from what few inches fell on Tug Hill overnight, we have virtually no snow right now - and I can recall when April first had plenty of snow pack up "on the hill."

This will not bode well for water levels in the Great Lakes and St Lawrence River.  The spot I was drafting from (major fire, drafting from the St Lawrence) was probably two feet lower than it should have been.  It was an issue.

The Detroit area got hardly any snow this winter, but we did get plenty of rain.

It only dropped to 31F in the NW side of Atlanta most of the plants and trees seemed to make it.  I have to resist buying plants until after easter.  There is always at least one more freeze coming.

Woke up to about 4" of the white stuff this morning, after driving home through some pretty heavy snowfall yesterday evening.

Ran the snowblower over the driveway - the bare spots are staying bare, but the packed down tracks I left when I went out for a fire call this morning are gathering snow as I speak.  It's just above freezing at the moment.

It's interesting, to say the least...

We'd have to find the grass first under the white stuff. Rain (we hope) or more snow this weekend...Happy to have the moisture though

Still snow on the ground this morning (and this evening) and we've got a winter storm watch in effect for Friday and Saturday.  Old Man Winter hasn't given up yet...

Much discussion amongst amateur radio and local emergency services around the upcoming solar eclipse.  We are in the path of totalilty (I can just go into my back yard to see it), so we're expecting thousands of visitors.  State and local parks will likely be packed, all lodging in the region sold out months ago (or are now asking premium prices), and there's talk of 16 hours of traffic gridlock.

I figure that once the moon is no longer blocking the sun, all you'll hear is slamming car doors as everyone heads home so they can go to work the next day.  But I know what it's like clearing a few thousand people out of our riverside villages after fireworks displays.  It ain't gonna be pretty.

I'm planning on assembling a "camera obscura" and using my GoPro to record the event.  Otherwise I'll be listening to several local ham repeaters as well as standing by for any fire service events that may occur.

I'm sure we'll all be glad when it's over...

For those with in an interest in the lake boats, I'd recommend visiting one of the Soo Locks cams overnight.  There are around four upbound boats headed that way in the St Mary's River alone.

The Seaway in general is coming alive.  All of the locks are now open.  There are several boats in Lake Erie headed toward Lake Superior as well.

The Streamtime (ship's equivalent to Virtual Railfan) video of the event is everywhere.

Here is the fire department radio traffic, starting with the dispatch for a possible vehicle in the water at the bridge:

Video shows the vessel had at least two occurences of electrical failure - which I suspect would have affected any form of rudder control.  Vessel is over 100K tons and was moving at 8+ knots at the time of the first failure - a whole lot of momentum to deal with.

There was a thread about this, but I guess it wasn't RR-ey enough.  Despite directly affecting 2 class 1s and a few shortlines.

I don't even pretend to get it at times.

It's been fun.  But it isn't much fun anymore.   Signing off for now.

NTSB first press conference

The railroad significance of this incident cannot be overstated.  There is cargo on dock at Baltimore that CSX & NS will have to redistribute to other container terminals up and down the East Coast until normal Container Liner service can be resumed at Baltimore.  Additional all those shipments headed to Baltimore will either be curfewed by the railroad carriers or redirected to other East Coast port.

I heard that contractors are starting on the Howard Street Tunnel up grades to allow full double stack movement of containers on the CSX I-95 corridor.  I understand that the Twin Oaks, PA auto ramp will be service via Philadelphi & Buffalo for the duration of the contstruction.

And now there's a TRAINS News Wire story about the railroad impacts of the collapse: https://www.trains.com/trn/news-reviews/news-wire/baltimore-bridge-tragedy-to-affect-rail-traffic-with-port-access-blocked/

The costs of this accident are going to be very high.  However the way maritime law limits liability every agency is going to feel a lot of pain.  As well even shippers will can be partially held somewhat liability. Someone who understands maritime law can give us a better thumb nail.  Here is a link to maritime law.  Remember what happened to the barge operator that broke the bridge that the Sunset fell off.  Also the Suzes canal blockage thast hit Ikea hard.
