This isn't unique to the 70's, but I personally like the black and gold of the d&rgw. Nothing fancy, just mean looking locomotives ready to go to work

I like the Chessie scheme, but give me Conrail's blue as my favorite--quite an improvement over PC! Worst scheme--KCS ghost white--I don't think ever saw one that didn't look like it had just fallen in a mudhole!

#1 The RF&P's blue/gray scheme was neat.
#2 SR's Black/Dulux Silver and gold made them look all dressed up for a night on the town! They also ran long hood forward as it should be!
#3 The Santa Fe's red/silver warbonnets were best!

Gotta go with BN's colors. I grew up seeing Cascade Green, and it's still a treat whenever an older unit goes by sporting the green and black.

I've Always liked the LV's Red and yellow paint scheme. It was only used on 2 units. One of which was GP-9 # 301 the other was an RS-3.

Best - Delaware and Hudson - When the northeast was being taken over by PC black and Conrail blue, it was a stand alone - highlighted by the quotation marks!!!

Penn Central green. For some reason I loved that interlocked P and C.

We have to weigh the paint?

The green Burlington Northern cars were my absolute favorites and it's a shame that you don't see many of those around anymore, I sometimes wi***hat Burlington Northern and Atchinson Topeka/Santa Fe are still two different railroad companies.

Being the L&N fan I am, I am going to say that I liked the SCL/L&N Family Lines paint. I liked the herald they used.

First would be the CB&Q's Red/Gray (hey, it lasted officially until March 2nd, 1970).
Second would be the Red/White/Blue worn by 4449 and the American Freedom Train.

At the risk of astounding people who know of my past C&O and Chessie connections, I'd have to say that my favorite 70's paint schem (as applied to locomotives) was that of the Erie Western Railroad. In fact, it would be limited to the 70s, because the ralroad was created after the formation of Conrail in 1976, and it was gone by 1980, IIRC.

Chessie still gets my vote as the most distinctive (my kids grew up looking for the kitties!).

I'll cast my vote for NJ Transit, platinum mist body, black roof and multi-color diagonals on the flanks.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
