Over on my side of the fence, was asked a question about another obscure operation in northern Virginia, the Richmond and Rappahannock Railway (1912-1917) that only built about a third of its route before imploding. Appears it never got assumed by anybody else and gets confused with two other railroads with Richmond in the company name.(Does not appear in the GO-20 family tree for those other lines - the little history there is makes the early railroad sound like the Van Sweringens in Cleveland gone terribly wrong)

Per the ICC Valuation Docket and ICC GO-20 for the NYC (#1022), contained in Volumes 27 and 28 of the ICC Valuation Reports. The Utica and Black River RR took over the Clayton & Theresa on 3/31/1886 and then was itself folded into the New York & Hudson River RR on the same day in its Articles of Consolidation in NY on 3/31/1886. (That then folded into NYC proper under those Articles of Consolidation on April 16,1913) ... the two never officially crossed paths until 1913 (Unofficially - )

I found a Poor's entry on the Clayton and Theresa - they apparently never owned any rolling stock.

Gave my presentation today to about 40 people.  Good audience - laughed at some jokes and had some great questions, and some nice reflections.  I focused a lot on the history and not much on the activities in Clayton (where one could step off one's Pullman and directly onto a steamer).

One fellow's father and grandfather had both worked for the Central.  I think he said the grandfather was a gandy dancer.

The presentation was recorded.  When they send me the link, I'll post it.

Looked at the ICC valuation docket(s) for the railroad or the Poors Manual for the railroad in question?

Haven't gotten that far into the weeds.  I never knew the Clayton and Theresa existed until I stumbled on it in general research.  The more or less definitive work on railroads in this area, The History of the Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburgh, by Edward Hungerford, never mentions it.

I don't expect any railroad experts in the audience.

But I will check it out.  The C&T was gone by 1870 or so, completely taken over by the Utica and Black River.

So, please try to conserve toilet paper whilst I get better............

Thank you for your service to the nation's hygiene, and hope that you feel better soon. Doctor had to postpone my latest infusion as too many nurses & MAs are out with omicron breakthrough infections.

Been checking out the new VR cam in Wichita, surprising busy with a lot of local traffic. Now obvious why BNSF wants to get their transcon traffic off of this sub.

I was off by a few years.  The 1880 issue of Poor's contains a listing for the C&T.  As I suspected, it states that the railroad owned no rolling stock, using that of the lessee's.

I'm busy preparing a presentation on the railroad in a neighboring village, part of a sesquicential event.  In the process of looking for images and other information I discovered a railroad I'd never heard of before.  The product of a local effort, I'm not sure it actually ran any trains of its own, instead having the railroad it connected to provide the service.  Curious.

Looked at the ICC valuation docket(s) for the railroad or the Poors Manual for the railroad in question?; for the time period it began? Those would tell you pretty quick if the railroad was a shell company or an independent operation that fell into the hands of the predecessor of NYC or the other railroads that reached up into that neighborhood?

Well, I get a week off of work, though not exactly by choice........

Was sick for a good chunk of last week, plus my sister had been sick since Wednesday with what we both thought was a cold/flu. Went down Saturday for a rapid Covid test, both of us turned up positive. So, a week off it is. Have mostly recovered, though it still feels like a bad cold. Both of us fared much better than my other sister who was unvaccinated, she had a high fever for nearly a week.........

So, please try to conserve toilet paper whilst I get better............

Cannon Fodder appreciates in value as another supply chain issue is discovered/created?Huh?

At least it isn't the transcon or ethanol.

Ethanol is alcohol.  The drinking kind.

It's the association that John Q Public has with Ethanol and the cars it's shipped in. Because this was denatured alcohol (instead of ethanol), the connection gets blurred and the activists bashing the industry mysteriously vanish. (same thing could apply to Bakken crude oil vs. refined product)

Interviewed tonight for a fire chief position over the entire township.  Not sure I really want the job, but I wanted to ensure some competition in the whole thing.

We'll see what happens.

BNSF seems to be having a run of bad luck this weekend with the latest being a 28 car derailment & alcohol fire near Wichita Falls (Oklaunion, TX) on the BN/FW&D Amarillo to Dallas to Houston line. (MP 155-156 Red River Sub)...The fire is threatening a US-287 bridge? At least it isn't the transcon or ethanol.

The Joint Line up here might be a little less busy for a while

Our temperature is headed back up, after a subzero predawn.  So, of course, we get a Winter Weather Advisory tomorrow, when a light rain will fall, but immediately freeze onto the cold roads.  Not to worry--not going anywhere here.

Platelet transfusion was held today.   I think I would have rather chased trains in Indiana, which was Plan A until the afternoon.  As it stands, I haven't been out of the home county all year and then some (probably since before Christmas), only going to labs and consultations.  Big operation schedued a week from today (exploratory, of course--we don't expect anything to really get done!).

Astronomical note...officially, the days have finally begun to get longer on the sunrise end, after a long time with an identical sunrise.  No evidence of a "January thaw" in the next week or so, though.  I still want to hibernate!

We're looking at zero or below (F) tonight.  My weather station dropped a degree (+11F to +10F) while I was on an amateur radio net - and that wasn't very long.

The barometer is rising quite quickly, too.

To show who abruptly lake effect can vary around here - A friend left home and just an inch or two of new snow and travelled seven miles, where they found 8+ inches of snow.  Other areas got 11+ inches, and some schools in the worst of it closed.  Meanwhile, I'm about 13 miles from my friend's destination and I've seen a grand total of 3" of the stuff.

Curious.

Montana - hold my beer (reports of 80-100 MPH gusts!)

I'm assuming this was in the Livingston area? Got down to -25F in eastern Montana last night (knowing that Livingston is in the south central part of the state).

Winds like that drove the recent Colorado wildfires, per MC and news reports.

I've seen what a minor gust can do with fire in dry grass.  Scary.

Had a gust of 36.1 MPH earlier today, with a temp in the single digits.

Yowza! Also I've seen pics of trucks with high side loads battered around like toys:

Iowa/Nebraska - here's your wind.

Montana - hold my beer (reports of 80-100 MPH gusts!)

Nearby to me some parts of the high Sierra have received over 200 inches (!) of snow, a record for this early in the season. I-80 is open so skiers must be happy ....  Large reservoirs like Lake Oroville are making good progress filling up, but it is still considered an 'extreme drought' until spring results are in.
