I don't know what the issue is but I spend most of my time on YouTube now. This website responsiveness is like Wheel of Fortune depending on time of day. I can't see how they would get anyone to pay for this experience long-term. The content of the published mag is deteriorating. Railway photos used to be 4-5 pages long ago, this last issue had maybe 2-3 pics. Then there was the notification that news and analysis is moving exclusively to the website. Thats great if you can find your way through the labyrinth of links and give up 10-15 min of wait time to get there.
It's downright snappy this morning. Best it's ever been.

BaltACDSuspect the only 'red faces' were the bean counters that likely pushed for the outsourcing in the first place, likely over the objections communications management personnel.
Therin lies the lesson, keep the bean-counters back in the counting house where they belong and don't let them out!

As of about 1:35 the site is faster and more responsive than I have ever seen it, both on MR and Trains (which still have their very different interface conventions). If this is indeed server virtualization in the cloud, it's doing everything the technology -- and the programming to use it -- is cracked up to be.

I suspected that might have happened. I imagine there were quite a few red faces at CSX after that failed experiment. Thanks!

Since the URL resolves to Amazon Web Services, they clearly are using that third party for their web services, thus are at their mercy.

I suspect you're 100% correct. That's the problem with outsourcing, with anything. At one point in time CSX outsourced the maintenance and repair of their telephone communications to an arm of AT&T - with the belief that they would be getting 24/7/365 service the same as CSX personnel had been providing. They were mistaken - they were getting 9-5 M-F and holidays excluded. To CSX's credit they did not let the contract remain in force for very long before they cancelled. The arm of AT&T could not figure out how to price 24/7/365 service for less than CSX was actually paying.
Kalmbach probably doesn't have any tech-savvy teenagers on hand to fix the problem.

Now, if Kalmbach had reduced its forum server presence to a couple of ancient Xeon boxes in a corner of its Texas customer-service outsource, then perhaps ISP or local connection might have been 'storm-related'. But long experience says to me Kalmbach IT would never tell... either to confirm or deny.

Ridiculously long and seemingly random delays to load pages, and an increased number of the page resets that lose typed replies without warning.
Meanwhile the PM failures on phone or Firefox above v.60 remain utterly unaddressed, as does the inability to see profile data of other members. I have the suspicion some of the loading delays are related to advertising messages locking up, as happened a few years ago for a while.
If this is part of a supposedly coordinated 'stage 3' reworking if the forum system, someone better take the binky out of Captain Eastwood's hand and warn him the ship is not going where it's supposed to...
