.Friend that retired from work wonders when she can get a day off.

Ain't that the truth.

Recovering from the weekend in MA by working on doll house for granddaughter.  The catch?  Need to deliver it by Sunday.  I think I can pull it off.

Carl, I don't check in here very often, so I just saw that you lost your daughter.  Marie and I are so sorry for your and Pat's loss - please accept our condolences.  It's been said that the one thing no parent should have to live through is the loss of a child.  You and Pat are in our thoughts and prayers.  The only thing I can add is to cherish the good memories and pride in her accomplishments, and you seem to be doing that as well as can be expected.  Be kind to yourselves, too.

The bulk of Winter has ended - lows overnight were in the middle 40's, high was in the low 60's.  Oh the humanity......

Alas, many of our coldest days come in February.  We may not get a lot of snow in February, but the cold...

The drive to MA was uneventful - mostly sunny, dry, and even moderate temperatures.

And we're all set up for the show.  Let the crowd come forth!

Jacksonville, FL - 32 this morning.

Careful where you put those dashes!

I think we touched +32F today, if barely.  It was breezy earlier in the day, but it's settled down now.  It's back to the temp I saw when I got up this morning:  +30F...

Today was our best weather day for the rest of the week and weekend, according to the forecasters.  Rain and snow will mix over much of that time.

Pat and I took advantage of the good day to take a trip into Indiana for a little bit of shopping and to lunch at our favorite restaurant in Gary.  (The owners are like family, and we wanted to make sure they knew about our daughter's passing last week...they'd heard.)  I was fortunate enough to capture a CN freight train on the west side of Gary, by the airport; I should have some good equipment dispositions--and perhaps some new cars--to report on.

There will be a service of music and memories for our daughter Linda on Saturday, April 18, at 11:00. I'll provide more details if desired...we think it will be well-attended.

I've been fortunate enough to have avoided a severe cold snap, but this past weekend was no bargain.  We had about two inches of a rain/snow mix that was almost impossible to shovel.  Gravel would have been lighter.

Sounds like you got some of our "Donner cement". Smile

Turns out that was great aversion therapy from my youth long ago - had to shovel out the second story entrance on a rental mountain cabin near Lake Tahoe. Have not had an urge to buy one since !!

Ns coal train still in the siding at work.Csx q 509 usually has steel slabs go down to Middletown from Detroit. Then the emptys come back on q 508. L 75 usually handles steel coil cars from Ft.Wayne to Leipsic Ohio on Ns too.Found a funny story in Trains on how steel moved on the green bay & western. The big railroads don't want anything unless it's a unit train.

Weather around here, South of Wichita, was cold (31 deg) early, weather guessers are predicting high wilBlindfoldl rise all the way to mid 40's ! Rain killed what luittle trace of snow had fallen overnight. Sigh

Just a note; on what has become a regular train through here; a Westbound 'coil steel' train. Out here, it is an unusual; consist. One would expect a single car, or maybe several, but not a solid train. Recently it has been a regular through here, on the first of the week; coverwed cars with cold rolled and then open gons with 6/8 coils strapped in each car.  Not unusual, maybe, in the upper midwest, or northeast, but a rare sight in south central Kansas, and headed West.

Heard some noises I didn't like in the front end of the truck, so I took it to the shop.  They said it was all tight, so I'll take their word for it.

Started out at -8F at 8 AM, now up to +22F.  Good day for inside activities.

Why would a front end rattle around at -8.  If you are cold and shivering, so are they.

Get an appointment book and prepare to check it often -

And get a scrap of paper, about the size of a postage stamp, to jot down all of your free time.

I vote for Slime, an air compressor (or air pot) and a fresh valve stem.

Gotta get some "fix-a-flat" for the snowblower.  One tire has a slow leak, but that means it's flat about the time I need it.  Hopefully I can get that dealt with until spring.  Changing it is a royal pain.

I thought when I retired I got to take it easy, silly me.

When someone tells me they are retiring and looking forward to kicking back, I tell them that retirement is not for the faint of heart.  Get an appointment book and prepare to check it often - they'll be busier than when they were working.

COLD!! with a bit of snow north of Elkhart. At least this time I get to skip digging out and plowing the couple thousand feet of gravel drives, 2 barns, a chicken coop, a hay feeder and 2 houses. I thought when I retired I got to take it easy, silly me.

About 6" of snow yesterday - the band has now moved south and we have mostly clear skies here now.

But that band to the south means I'll skip a small train show in Utica - I don't need to drive through that lake effect stuff.

Gotta get some "fix-a-flat" for the snowblower.  One tire has a slow leak, but that means it's flat about the time I need it.  Hopefully I can get that dealt with until spring.  Changing it is a royal pain.
