Tough week for the fire service - two Line of Duty Deaths in York, PA, one in NYC, and now two in West Virginia.
A local firefighter who was in NYC on 9/11 and worked side-by-side with FDNY just passed away. Likely due to his exposure at the towers.
Add to that the cancer presentation I went to this week, and it's clear that being a firefighter has changed.

Well, I worked today, so you know I didn't give up my day job.
There was a good snowfall while I was eating breakfast (it may have snowed in the night also)--and when I looked out during our "light meal" (the last meal of the day), it was all gone.
Sorry, MC, I couldn't catch any to send to you.
Johnny
We had frost under clear skies this morning.
There's rain in the forecast, but I'm hoping it holds off tomorrow until after the march from the funeral home to the church for a firefighter's funeral.
evening
Went down to nephews shop.Got our order.Looked for RJ Corman. They were busy picking up ties in Greenville.Saw some Csx at Ansonia.Ns had a one unit wonder with problems going through Eaton.Had to call a second unit to help.Tomorrow it's projects here at home.

Track geometry train came through southbound on the Toledo sub a while ago.
Were you wearing an orange sweatshirt? If you were, I probably saw you.

And why not? We get thundersnow... And we aren't out of the woods yet for snow, either.

tree68 We get thundersnow...
Ah, yes. The first and only time I experienced thundersnow was in your neck of the woods, in Ilion, NY, in 1968. Lots of noise, and the snow came down in great big wet chunks. I'd never even heard of it before.

Had Thundersnow in the Central Maryland area in early November 1988. Lightning, Thunder and about 15 inches of snow.
Never too old to have a happy childhood!

Probably came by after we left. There was a guy with a super size 4x4 visiting the trainpark. We visited a friend who had been in the hospital and went home.
Well I don't have to worry about the Chinese magic bus space station crashng through my roof as we up here in Canada have been declared exempt by the 'get to the point' aptly named Centre for Orbital and Re-Entry Debris Studies ( glad I don't have to answer that phone).
Those of you, say in Memphis or San Diego, well, good luck. Look up once in while.
Just to point out that there is no free lunch and karma is alive and well, it is brutally cold with a horrendous wind chill touching -40 up here today. Went out for some hot cross buns and lotto tickets and was wondering if I would make it back, instead found frozen solid clutching hot cross buns in one hand and the lotto in the other.
Somebody from Montana told me once that if you took a sudden deep breath in that super-minus cold weather your lungs would freeze and you'd die. Is there any truth to that? In my experience in cold weather in Alaska and upstate New York (the latter was colder), I think I instinctively took shallow breaths.
Went west today.Just missed both Amtraks this morning in Bryan. The old NYC signals sit battered and thrown in the scrap hopper. The ones in Butler are still up.The searchlight signals on the wabash line are still in operation as well.Csx was in sit and wait mode.We went to New Haven an Ns was moving.Saw a scale test car on one train. Also they had high hoods working around the yard too. Also had the FRA geometry and inspection car in the yard as well.Stacey and Matt went to get supper.
Went down to Palatka, FL this morning - got blocked by SB Amtrak working at the Depot for about 4 minutes. Lead (of 2) engine blocks street to get the coaches to stop on the platform.
Paul of Covington---- No, that will not happen. People function is extreme cold temperatures with their jobs just fine, although you need to be dressed adequately. It is -40 up here Nov, Dec, Jan and Feb and the truckers truck, the railroads railroad and the power crews are out there as was my cable guy stringing a new line from a pole to the house. Not easy and there are restrictions.
The students still go out for a smoke in that stuff, and people go out on the lake ice fishing all winter long, practically every weekend.
Worst I ever experienced was in Schefferville on the Labrador Quebec border, in the open pit. Wind chill in the pit was -70, antifreeze turns into rubber balls, did what I was there for, sampling, for about 7-8 minutes and got the hell out.
I could not function in extreme heat, say 115F, either.
Gonna be windy overnight - gale warnings up on Lake Ontario, and high winds along the shore and well inland. The lake is still high, so that doesn't bode well for lakeshore property...
But it should settle down for Easter Sunday. Everyone remember to take it easy on the jelly beans, and you can have my coconut eggs...
The temperature was in the mid-forties this morning--and reached at least 70, and is predicted to be about 40 in the morning.Rain is expected Monday
Mookie, I plan to come thorugh your hometown Tuesday morning, on my way see people I knew 60+ years ago.
Johnny - welcome back to Lincoln. I don't think I even know anyone I knew 60+ years ago. And I was born & raised here.
Might see some snow on the ground. Altho the weather report on Intellicast for today had "Precip 0%/.03in"
That will make you stop and think.....Not even humid yet - still very overly dry from winter....
She who has no signature! cinscocom-tmw
MookieMight see some snow on the ground.
No snow in my immediate area. Saw plenty of snow on my way to the railroad Friday and Saturday - and there were several inches still on the ground at Remsen, where the kids had to "hunt" eggs in the parking lot instead of on the grass.
The streams were running quite high on the lee side of Tug Hill.
A special visitor at Remsen on Saturday was Olympian Erin Hamlin, who signed autographs and posed for pictures with her medal. She actually lives there - the railroad passes not far from her family home.
Off to visit daughter's family for church and dinner.
