Murphy Siding Fresh out of college I went to work for a lumber yard. I had been there 6 months when I got to experience my first physical inventory. Inventory time is a big thing in our industry. The way that company did it was to close at noon, have everybody take a one hour lunch. Then it was all hands on deck till late in the evening to get everything counted. Noon rolled around and a bunch of the old head salesmen asked me to go to lunch with them. Being the lowly rookie I was kind of excited. We had lunch at the Brass Rail Bar. It became apparent why I was invited. I was the designated driver! I had a cheeseburger and a Coke. The old heads ordered fries and had shots of tequilla for the better part of an hour. I wonder how accurate their counting was.

(It wasn't alcohol, but several years back we sent two new guys out as a survey crew. The third day on the job, we sent them to a project involving expanding the courthouse grounds of a suburban county. Neither one came back to the office at the end of the day and both found themselves wearing orange jumpsuits for offenses unknown to the company. The survey equipment and unlocked truck w/ keys were right where they left them, miraculously untouched at 8PM. One had skipped bail on a DUI and the other had skipped child support.)

Easier than going through "reasonable suspicion," which may have been what triggered the action, assuming that is what happened.

I thought I posted here a few minutes ago, but can't find it.Re the guy who got busted for accepting a call from the bar because some bosses were in there when he got the call. Although the outcome was the correct one, I can't help wondering whether this was a set-up for him--these bosses just happened to be in there when he got the call, just happened to see him take the drink, and yes, knew who he was, even though he hadn't worked there that long.Since my retirement, we often go to taverns or bars for lunch, though neither my wife nor I ever touch the stuff...they have good food, or a good view (of the tracks), or both. I wonder what my boss would think if he were in there and saw me sippin' a Diet Coke on the rocks.As for drawers full of duller knives, we had this one fellow CRO--older than I was by at least 12 years, both in age and seniority--who came up with the brilliant idea to bring a grill to work, set it up outside his tower, have the other guys bring some ingredients for a picnic lunch. His contribution? The six-pack! Maybe two. Fortunately, some of his co-workers convinced him to quickly get rid of them (back in his car or whatever), and nothing came of it. But he was totally convinced that Rule G (I think it was still Rule G back then) wouldn't apply for something like that.

Much better weather today.Didn't mind the rain sprinkles tonight either.Had a meeting in Deshler so we made a day of trainwatching.Csx had restricted track from Holgate to Galetea.Tie Gang,Ballast cleaner and Mow workers were all on track 2.The Mow workers had to make way at the Hamler Diamond so the I&O could go north.The Ballast cleaner worked it's way to East Deshler before backing into track 4 for the night.D 743 had to use the west siding at Deshler to run around it's train due to a parked rail train in the east siding.Gave the CPL signal a special indication which is rarely seen on the SW wye signal in Deshler.Going to publish the meeting notes and head for bed.

Warm here, too. Good thing I have a riding mower now or the lawn would likely have had to wait a couple of days. I did do some tree trimming, though. Gotta run it all to the transfer site in the AM.
Took the whole weekend off from the railroad (we're running weekends only right now), and taking next weekend off, too, so I can take part in the amateur radio "field day." Twenty-four hours of talking on the radio...
Got a heads up that Csx had a q 200 coming with 2 Ferromex units.While waiting saw a westbound ethanol train with Csx 5500 "Spirit of Cincinnati" leading. Then after q 200 here comes q 091 with 2 nice Up units on the point.Stacey made a special lunch and supper for tonight.The vacation continues.

Trying to stay cool here, too, though I didn't mind when Pat took me to my favorite place in Elmhurst for dinner. Saw very little in the way of trains while there, so took a short drive up to the Bensenville/Bryn Mawr/Franklin Park area, where I found pay dirt--new cars, new secondhand cars, new reporting mark for me. McArthur rewarded me by climbing to 100, before a rain shower knocked it down to 87 by the time we got home.

Triple H day today in Nw Ohio.Matt and friends are off on their mission trip.Saw a couple trains on Ns after Matt left.Went down to CSX.Crew driver was looking for a train at the yard.He needed to go to the elevator west of town.(Darn GPS system).Again happy Fathers day to all.Going to stay in and keep cool.

Matt is packed.Delivered birthday greetings to sister and others today.Met new nephew in law.Turns out his birthday is on the 25th so he fits right in.Csx was running trains.Also had a Loram ballast cleaner working.Things to do here at home.
