Thunk is the noise that occurs if you tried to jump in.

Looking like wind and snow in northern New York.  Wheeee!

If the winds trend westerly or northwesterly, I won't see much snow, but "persistant" squall areas may see two feet...

One of our regular participants on a local ham radio net winters in Florida.  He reported temps in the low 30's last night...

The "rule of thumb" is 1 inch of water content per 10 inches of snow, which can vary, of course.  And that's as it falls, not after it packs in.

The proper way to measure snow is every six hours, on a surface used for that purpose (a "snow board").  It's cleaned off after each measurement.  I've heard of snow reports being disregarded because more than four measurements were taken.

But that's still 24" of water content...

Tree - knowing your background, I will defer to you on this one.  AND - I will let you go measure this one, too.  I hate snow and ice with a passion, so I will go investigate San Diego and see if I can find measurable snow there.  Mischief

According to the DEA, we have lots of measurable snow here, but that's another story.Stick out tongue

In my 50+ years in town, I have seen snow actually accumulate exactly one time, maybe 15-16 years ago, overnight in one small location on my then commute.  I have perhaps seen snow falling three or four other times, not enough to stick.  Folks have to drive up into the mountains to get their snow experiences, which they do for the amusement of the local TV news shows every year.  (The TV stations send crews out for rain as well; I guess unusual events are news?)

Chuck - I have so many good memories of SD!  The only snow I saw while there was up in Alpine - that was really cool snow, not like the mess we get here!

Chuck,

A shop I worked at in the nineties hired a gal from Socal. We were wondering if she would make it to work after a rather heavy snow. She showed up while a lot of natives stayed home. Wink

Just heard a fire dispatch for a tractor trailer on it's side, and white out conditions in the area.  Given the wind, neither is surprising.

I had a friend in college from Orlando. After the first snow he showed up late for class and was dripping wet and shivering. He had been making snow angels. It's the listtle things in llife that count.

My son-in-law is from San Diego (native English-speaking San Diegans are relatively uncommon).  While Linda was finishing college, he came to live and work up here, arriving on a very cold December night.  He stuck it out for over a year, but when she graduated (the first time) and they got married, they went back to California.  Now we can pry them away for a week or two every winter (or late fall, as in Thanksgiving), but that's it.

It's so cold here now that I have to be irradiated every weekday.  Wink

Yeah, even in the mountains to the east, the snow is generally pretty polite, four to six inches is usually the definition of a "heavy snowfall" up there.

In the Imperial Valley where I did my early growing up (my wife says I haven't finished that process yet) the last and only known snowfall was in 1932, before my time a bit.  Maybe that's one of the reasons the Blue Angels do their pre-tour training down there (story in the IV Press website today about the return of the Angels).

Had an airman from CA in my first USAF tech school class at Chanute AFB.  Before we started the class, we were placed in "casual" jobs - mine was repairing window blinds.

As we walked to our detail one November morning, central Illinois weather had turned cold, freezing the puddles.  The fellow from CA found that most curious...

Had a college roomate from the Bahamas who had never been in USA even though had dual citizenship. 1st ice and snow storm took him out to local grocery parking lot for snow driving insructions.  1st fifteen minutes had him white knuckled.  He learned all the tricks and later has lived in the rockies area rest of his life. Also a great snow skier.
