Carloads were down 5.7%

That appears to suggest a "story within a story"  imported loads continue to trend up, while domestic loads continue to tend down.

I wonder if there is any reliable metric, comparing how the number of jobs offshored create new job opportunities working in the import channels to bring the offshored production to market? 20:1? 50:1?

Intermodal Growth

Despite worries about lower fuel prices giving an advantage to over the road trucking, so far in 2016 intermodal loadings are showing strong growth.

For the week ended 2/20/2016 there were 244,747 carloads and 252,463 intermodal loads.  IM loads were up 18.2% over the corresponding week in 2015.  Carloads were down 5.7%.  The majority of rail loads are now intermodal.

I like it.  I like it a lot.

"By many measures, the U.S. freight rail system is the safest, most efficient and cost effective in the world." - Federal Railroad Administration, October, 2009. I'm just your average, everyday, uncivilized howling "anti-government" critic of mass government expenditures for "High Speed Rail" in the US. And I'm gosh darn proud of that.
