CShaveRR We broke above freezing today, and it felt good enough that we both walked our errands (another car-free day). Only three trains seen while we were out, and two of those were scoots. We have to take the car in tomorrow to be looked at for a potential short in the passenger-side door...the ability to lock and unlock all doors from the right side has become intermittent. Y'know, it was just as east to have no electrical stuff in the doors and crank the windows up and down. Our temperatures are supposed to improve through the rest of this week, until they get to cloudy and the mid-50s by Friday. The clouds are supposed to leave on Saturday, then the cooldown begins on Sunday.

Deggesty Paul of Covington I dread all the electrical and electronic gizmos in new cars. I still miss my '74 van--just a box on four wheels. Was it a worn-out box on wheels when you got rid of it?

Murphy Siding Mookie BaltACD Yesterday started out with temps in the teens and 4 inches of snow, temps up to 28 in the afternoon and early evening with rain - main highways well salted and slushy - overnight increasing temps and increasing rain - now 45 and pouring. Trade you a whole lotta sun for some of that rain? I think you want both. We got the rain late yesterday, and 28 degrees. 'Would have prefered the whole lotta sun.

We expect a high in the mid-fifties tomorrow, with rain and/or snow later in the week.
I just checked on #5 and #6; #5 is past Glenwood Springs, and expected in Grand Junction on time; #6 is expected into Fraser two minutes late. So the track seems to be clear.
Sorry, no opportunity to see any Wyoming jackalopes today.

Deggesty mudchicken Rocks & Boulders jumping off of canyon walls here. Beware of flying rocks (!). Glenwood Canyon is shut down after two major rockfalls. I-70 is closed and UP's Glenwood Sub is restricted with extra patrols during the extreme swings in temperature being experienced here. Waiting to see what Amtrak does with #5 and #6.... It's a little late for #6, but #5 could be run across Wyoming? (act fast!)

It was a reasonably mild day yesterday (the snow stopped and it was in the mid-20's) so my wife let me get out for pictures after I cleared the walks, which went quickly since the snow was mostly powder. I had a pretty good outing and was able shoot an entire 24-exposure roll.
Trust me - the food in this town all tastes like it was made on a printer. And it isn't me cuz we ate at the Egg and I and it was delicious! Only about 2-3 places in town - even sit downs are very good. Unfortunately - BBQ place is a good one. And we can't eat at those two places every week. I don't think....
Mookie Murphy Siding Mookie Went out to breakfast and then made a stop trackside. Sunny - very, very sunny with a temp of 47 degrees. A perfect train watching day. Caught about 6-7 coal trains - going both ways in about a 3 hour window. No freight at all. And nothing going south - all east and west. No coal crisis here. During that time, made a fast trip to DQ for my first and only for 2016 - strawberry shake. What a great day! You limit yourself to one strawberry shake per year? Talk about willpower. They were so much better way back in the 60's. So one is enough to cure me for them for at least a year. Maybe they make these on one of those new-fangled printers....

Of the traditional three flavors of shake, strawberry is my favorite. But some people use real strawberries (I'm surised if DQ doesn't), and some use some sort of powder with imitation flavoring. Portillo's, my favorite hot-dog/chocolate-cake/rib place does the latter; that's the only menu item I will not recommend from there. At DQ, I'll go for a cherry shake...especially on President's Day! I cannot tell a lie...
no one can have just one......

We've been getting snow all day. Not very dramatic, though--we might wake up to four or five inches tomorrow morning.Joe, thanks for your call about the SP Heritage unit headed back (we were still in church). I was hoping we'd see it this evening, but no such luck. Nice pictures and video over on Facebook! My Valentine got to go to a baby shower without me this noon. A good time was had by almost all. While she was gone I decided to dust off the ceiling fan in our great-room and surprise her. Well, I surprised her, all right--the step-stool came out from under me and I landed on the floor, somehow cutting myself near my left eye. Surprise!...a half-shiner! (But a clean fan, thanks to a better step-stool.)We then went out to our favorite Italian restaurant in Elmhurst...a few of you may remember which one. Good variety there while we were...an auto train, a coal train, two scoots, a manifest, and a stack train, all in about an hour. After we left, the place was dead...nothing lined up at either Park or Grace. What was really neat was being able to look west down the tracks at a crossing in Elmhurst and see three sets of signals with all of their lights showing the default aspects: green on the nearest one by the gravel pit, flashing yellow at Villa Avenue, and solid yellow at Addison Road (so you know the home signal at Grace was going to be all red!).

Paul of Covington I get a kick out of people up north having to put a + or - in front of their temperatures. I get a kick out of people in Houston referring to their high, solid ground as swamp. People up north might get a kick out of us down here sweltering day and night from May through September.
