I haven't seen a tin hat fly by yet, Brian...did you check the webcam?I was watching the skies, though--it was sunny to start, but it's mighty gray out there now, and I'm glad I had a jacket over my hoodie. It still says 55 out, with 30-mph steady winds (it got up to 63 earlier). There are a lot of power outages in our area, and I think I deected a couple of blinks here. The train-watching trip was a bust (except for my Five Guys fix in Oak Park). Next to nothing happening on the Overland Route at this end. I did see some new Cryo-Trans reefers. Speaking of new cars, they stopped painting (or applying) the black "consolidated stencil" boxes on them. Apparently the brake valves don't need to be cleaned and tested any more, and most roller-bearing journals don't need lubrication any more. All that was left was the build date, and that is now just stencilled on the side of the car...it blends in with the rest of the paint too easily, and will probably disappear more quickly under grime and/or graffiti. I've seen it done this way on some cars built in December...I know there are some 2016-built freight cars out there, but I'm still waiting to see my first one.

After the oh-dark-thirty EMS call, I slept in. When I got up and wandered into the kitchen for some breakfast what did I see at one of my bird feeders (actually on the ground below it) but a fox. I can't say with certainty that a fox has never visited before, but it's the first time in some 30 years of feeding the birds that I've seen one there.
It stayed for about 15 minutes after I first saw it, nibbling at the sunflower seeds the birds had knocked to the ground (thanks, bluejays!). I was able to get several pictures and a short video before something spooked it and it trotted out the back of the yard toward the river.
Interesting.
Warmer now - +31F, again 40 degrees warmer than when I came back from the EMS call...

At 5 o'clock this morning the wind picked up to a howl so fast that I was expecting Mud Chicken to fly by. The wind chimes on the front proch weren't chiming. THey were plastered flat against the porch ceiling.
Tree - that is funny! I do need to check my front porch to see if there is anything feather-wise out there. If we would have had snow and freezing temps, we would be in a winter blizzard today - the wind just howled all nite. But with a high of 70 yesterday, it is just a noisy wind.

Today was "blustery", tomorrow is supposed to be "breezy" (Blow ye winds southerly!), bringing us very warm weather. Johnny, 50 might be about the swiftest gust we get.
Temperatures are supposed to get close to 60, though they're keeping that for the southern suburbs. Nonetheless, I plan on going out into it to harvest some freight cars at Elmhurst and Oak Park (no little ol' drive rods for me!).Joe, you have nothing on us...Metra dinkies were delayed on BNSF while inspectors were checking out a bridge that a truck had hit. I think that's about the third one this year on BNSF alone! Of course, around Chicago you don't know if it's low clearance or the center pier that gets 'em.My sightings logs are still giving me problems, and I'm anxious to get away from them for even part of a day. I finally divided the real troublemaker into three parts (box cars, covered hoppers, and everything else); I'm hoping that that will at least narrow down the problem. Of course, when I'm away from them I'm just as anxious to get back to them. I guess that's the thing about a good hobby.

The worst winds around here are usually canyon winds which come whistling west down through the canyons on the east side; the winds this morning generally seemed to not so bad, but the cemetery in Tooele (west of the Oquirrh Mountains) lost many big trees.

Y'know, it was just as east to have no electrical stuff in the doors and crank the windows up and down. I still can see, after going on about sixty years, the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds at college standing in front of a door and trying one key after another until he found the right key (many of the locks were made by the same manufacturer). I never had to carry more than about eight keys that were connected with my responsibilities, and most of them were different from the others.
