How about Nebraska Central, Nebraska Northeastern? (Sioux City area help me out please), Nebkota Rail (NW Nebraska old C&NW Cowboy Line). Also, is it Illinois Rail Net or Illini Rail Net? Also I believe the prior to the Iowa Interstate there was the Iowa Railroad Co. And if you want to go way back the Burlington & Missouri

"Delaware" in Delaware Lackawanna & Western and in Delaware & Hudson refers to the Delaware river, not to the state of Delaware as neither of these railroads had tracks in the state (or even came close for that matter).

There is the Indiana Rail Road

Yes, railroad is spelled as two words for legal reasons. A Shortline that runs from Indianapolis through Bloomingtonand into Southeastern Illinois. It also crosses the Tulip trestle near Bloomfield, IN. The pictures on the main page are taken on the trestle.
Here's the website:
http://www.inrd.com/

As for the trestle see this site:
http://www.bloombank.com/dept/pr/community/viaduct.html

Make sure your sound is on!for the INRD site.

There's the Central Columbiana & Pennsylvania (CQPA) very close to where I live, but not for much longer. It's bankrupt and about to be taken over by the Ohio Central, apparently...

Are Camden & Amboy, Atlantic & Danville, Norfolk & Petersburg and Savannah & Atlanta named for states somewhere?

That's a gotcha.

It has been pointed out, though, that many of the railroads listed were not named for states. I believe the Ohio in C&O and B&O actually refers to the river (please correct me if I'm wrong), and the Delaware in D&H is definitely the river. The Wyoming in G&W refers to the locale (in Wyoming County, NY). There are many more.

I've always thought that was the case with the X & Ohio railroads.

I was looking through the appendix of SPV's rail atlas for the North East (Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania) and found some more obscure railroads with state names in them.

My favorite one is Cambria & Indiana which is named not for the state of Indiana, but for Indiana county in Pennsylvania.

Many of these are defunct.
Belvidere & Delaware River Railway (named for the river not the state)
Bradford & Western Pennsylvania Railroad (narrow gauge)
Cambria and Indiana Railroad
Central New York Railroad
Central New York Southern Railroad
Central New York & Western Railroad
Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad
Central Railroad Company of Pennsylvania
Columbus & Ohio River Railroad
Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad (successor to part of the DL&W)
Delaware & Northern Railroad (named for river)
Delaware Valley Railway (operates former RDG line from PA to DE)
East Jersey Railroad & Terminal
East New York Utilities-Albany Southern
East Penn Railway
Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley Railroad (named for Wyoming valley in PA not state)
Maryland & Delaware Coast Railroad
Maryland & Delaware Railroad
Middletown and New Jersey Railway
Northern Railroad of New Jersey
New York & Atlantic Railway
New York Cross Harbor Terminal Corp.
New York Connecting Railroad
New York Dock Railway
New York & Greenwood Lake Railway
New York & Greenwood Lake Railroad
New York & Lake Erie
New York & Pennsylvania Railway
New York Regional Rail Corp.
New York State Electric & Gas Corp.
New York Westchester & Boston Railway
Ohio-Rail Corporation
Ohio & Pennsylvania Railroad
Ohio River & Western Railway (narrow gauge)
Pennsylvania & Atlantic Railroad
Port Jersey Railroad
Penn-Jersey Rail Lines
Pittsburgh and Ohio Valley Railway
Penn Eastern Rail Lines
Susquehanna & New York Railroad
Southwestern Pennsylvania Railroad
West Jersey and Seashore Railroad
Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (tourist operation)

Some of these are named for Washington D.C. None of them for Washington state.
East Washington Railway
Washington Baltimore & Annpolis Electric Railroad
Washington Brandywine & Point Lookout Railroad
Washington & Old Dominion Railroad
Washington Terminal Co.
Waynesburg and Washington Railroad (narrow gauge)

and commuter/Subway lines like
MARC
Maryland Transit Authority
New Jersey Transit (same as Central New Jersey Transit?)
New York City Transit Authority
New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority
SEPTA

One that doesn't appear in the atlas was the Pennsylvania Poughkeepsie & Boston (PP&B referred to as the Pickles, Pork & Beans) which was a predecessor to the Lehigh and New England Railroad. PP&B wasn't around too long.

To add to the 'there was' list:

Two Canadian railways:

Nova Scotia Railway
Prince Edward Island Railway

Two linked railroads, both later to become subsidiaries of the New York Central:
Ottawa and New York Railway
New York and Ottawa

Sorry, hit the 'submit' button too quickly.

Two linked railroads, both later to become subsidiaries of the New York Central:
Ottawa and New York Railway
New York and Ottawa Railroad

The Ottawa and New York was originally incorporated as the Ontario Pacific Railway,
and the New York and Ottawa was originally the Northern New York Railroad.
