Not at all, Paul! It's just that we've been here for over a month, and somebody (I) needed a taste of home. We had to do some shopping once we got there (it's by a mall) just to kill time before supper. We've been to this one before; the food (and the cake!) were just as good as in Villa Park, Elmhurst, Northlake, etc., etc.Yesterday we were taken to In 'N' Out Burgers by Linus' cousins, aunt, and uncle. Not bad, but won't keep us from going home when we can...

Belated congratulations on your anniversary. I just can't believe that you went all the way to California just to find a Portillo's.
Thanks for the offer, MC, but I persuaded my bride (42 years ago yesterday) to allow us to head back by a different route. We'll be doing the Sunset/Texas Eagle trip. I suppose, just 'cause we're on it, we won't be doing the MP/CEI detour east of St. Louis. Trip down south wasn't all that great for train-watching (plenty of baretables and stack trains; next to nothing else freight-wise). We spent a couple of hours at Fullerton overall (an hour yesterday, another hour today); much of the rest of our time was spent in traffic, including driving the Sunset Strip, through Hollywood, and through downtown LA (that's a Carl thing: going somewhere just to say we've been...and it was interesting!). And finding a good quilt store for Pat in Orange, and visiting Portillo's for an anniversary dinner (including the best chocolate cake served anywhere!). Lunch was from an establishment in West Hollywood, at the home of Pat's uncle and aunt.Today was hamburgers from In 'N' Out, before we made a dash home with Linus. Chris and Linda were amazed that we made it from Westminster to the 405/101 junction in 40 minutes flat (took close to two hours the opposite direction on Monday afternoon). Just going with the flow...We are hoping that today begins the final week of our stay here. If not Wednesday, then Friday...
Back from the railroad - four school trips (the passengers were from schools in the area). Around 1500 total. As I was engineer, I didn't see much of the passengers.
Tuesday was nice - a bit cooler and sunny. Wednesday dawned chilly and with a mist in the air. The mist part quit, but it never really got warm...
Got re-SkyWarned tonight - I'm good as a storm spotter for another couple of years. I've got to make a trip out to the weather office (ours is in Buffalo) sometime so I can see how upper air observations (weather balloons) have changed since I did them.

Spring weather seems to be about to arrive here, though we expect cool mornings at the end of the week, with more rain. Most of the trees I have noticed have left (leaved out)--and some irises are beginning to flag; most are still holding their shape.

Afternoon from Alamo City everyone.
We are enjoying this wonderful bountiful rain that we have so needed for quite some time. My lawn has never looked hit green.
Hope everyone is enjoying their Wednesday.
evening
Ns local was uptown when I left work.Came home and got the swamp mowed.Need a new knob for the dryer.Pick that up tomorrow.
Carl: Have fun at the end of my old territory (technically Basta, at the UP Anaheim Branch crossing you see way off in the distance from the Fullerton depot platform beyond the Spaghetti Factory (converted and moved UP depot)
Hoop you up some vittles from the La Junta platform on #4? (you get to see the ceremonial closing of the window on the bar car when you hit Holly CO/Coolidge KS on the run east.)
Should be in CO by Sunday.
Back again, finally, on a new laptop. Previous laptop was dispatched by Linus, who waterboarded it with my drink. My fault, of course. This was Saturday morning.New one has lots of things that need to be done to make it function like the old one for me, including a couple hundred dollars' worth of software. All of my files are lost until I do that. It will wait, though, until I get back to Lompoc, so it can be a recreational activity for my son-in-law. Linus has been given a time out. He's out with his cousins, and aunt and uncle, for a couple of days. Rumor has it that he gets to go to Disneyland...nice reward, huh?We, meanwhile, are enjoying a break at a hotel in Fullerton. I will try to watch some trains at the station before we have to go to Hollywood. Pat's uncle lives less than a mile from the Sunset Strip. His second wife is the mother of an employed actress. Linda had chemo, blood tests, and an MRI today. I hope we get some positive news about those. We pick up Linus and head back to Lompoc on Wednesday. I'm hoping that in a little over a week we can be headed home. Last time I said that, though, it didn't work (we'd be on our way now). I should just shut up.
Sitting tight, waiting for some weather to arrive (it's knocking at the door). We even have a bow echo!
Although I really should be sleeping...

tree68 It's been suggested that I should be checked for sleep apnea, however aside from often waking up at the peak of my "REM" cycle (90 minutes - you can almost set your clock by it), I can't say as I'm suffering any of the other symptoms. I would not look forward to sleeping with CPAP. Going to a sleep lab would almost be counter productive - trying to sleep in a different bed generally makes for a fitful night's sleep regardless.

I was a bit skeptical about it, but in the end, glad. The part that jolted me was when the doctor said that I quit breathing an average of 20 times an hour........
My CPAP is actually pretty small, and can run on house power or through the 12 volt plug. Must be getting used to it: was seven hours asleep last night, and felt better while driving today.........

rain here in Nw Ohio.Had some thunderboomers.Local on Ns was shifting cars when I left work.Time to get chores done.
rvos1979 ...now I have to sleep with a CPAP machine.
well not exactly what we were looking for in Ft Wayne. It was nice to see NS delivering 3 sd 70 aces to Ferromex. The big steamer we were looking for is coming from St. Louis.Taking the wabash to Ft Wayne,The Nkp to Bellevue Ohio, the south from Bellevue to Roanoke Va.(this was the routing information I got)With tomorrow being mothers day and mother nature sending us thunderstorms, might have to pass on this.Happy mothers day to all the moms.
I'm pooped. Drove an hour and a half to visit daughter and family and deliver birthday gifts (grandson is into "Transformers." He mastered both before I left.) Joined them for dinner at a local restaurant (it was packed - especially the "outdoor" dining area, where we had wanted to eat). There was a nice breeze coming in the window where we did sit. Dinner was my treat.
After dinner, back at their house, I introduced grandson to my quadcopter. He and a neighbor boy had fun running away from it as it swooped around the yard. Maybe next time I'll let him try flying it.
Grandson is enjoying a weeklong birthday. His actual 6th birthday was Monday. My visit today, a group trip to an indoor water park tomorrow, and a visit by his other grandparents Sunday will wrap it up...
High of around +88F today - more of the same through the weekend.
Weather forecasters are saying, "Well, we didn't get much rain out of that." We didn't get any here, though there were angry-looking clouds on the horizon.Treatments for Linda are going agonizingly slowly. She's feeling a little down today, but things should perk up for her next week: chemo, MRI, an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon, Linus' first day in daycare (though I pity the poor lady if his behavior doesn't improve over today's!).
ns had 2 go west as I left work.Doing chores and such.More like summer out right now.Mother nature might send us some rumblers this weekend. The porkopolis players are on the south side of Chicago this weekend for a series with the white sox.
We could actually use some rain here in the wilds of northern NY. We've had "red flag" warnings up several times in the past week or so, and any rain we have gotten has been just enough to say it rained. Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River are both low for this time of year.
Headed out tomorrow afternoon for grandson's birthday celebration with Papa. Also adding daughter's 40th birthday to the mix, and a visit with new granddaughter. Gonna be a busy evening! Saturday the fire department is doing a drill with a neighboring FD, so I'll be there a good part of the day.
This coming week I'm engineer for several school field trips. They won't be long trips, but I'm sure the kids will enjoy them. Then I've got to rush home for a SkyWarn class. We occasionally get those twisty thingies (and lesser spring/summer weather) here, too.
ns had a train in the siding when I left work.We went uptown and csx sent a westbound train by.Matt took care of things for mothers day.Tomorrow is friday.
It's times like that when one wishes that the rain in the streets (which they'd just flush down a drain somewhere into rivers that might not be able to handle it) could be loaded up and shipped to California, where relief is sorely needed. It's sad to see the forecasters out here grasping at straws and hoping for just a little rain. If it's like this now, with temps in the 60s for highs, wait until it warms up!I guess we won't be going home next week after all...the wheels of progress aren't turning as rapidly as we'd hoped, either on daycare for the young-un or for reconstructive work on Linda's poor spine. However, the break we didn't get before this past weekend might come about early next week. I'm hoping we can see Pat's Hollywood uncle, maybe some trains...
Deggesty Mookie And to keep this all about trains: Fire Dept and BNSF chasing propane tanks that are floating in the flood waters just outside the yard. BNSF just wants the tanks back. FD worried they may hit a bridge. Best entertainment in years. Are the FD and BNSF swimming the tanks down? (I don't think they can run very well in the water.)

Well, 5" of rain would certainly take care of that pesky dust problem we've been experiencing.
Thanks to Chris / CopCarSS for my avatar.
Be careful what you wish for....
5 inches of rain overnite. Now fire dept out with water rescue equipment to get people out of their vehicles. "Oops, the water was just a little deeper than I thought!"
