As I ate breakfast this morning I enjoyed watching the wildlife--primarily quail and squirrel--in the backyard getting their breakfasts. There were at least four quail and five squirrels that were really noticeable. The adult squirrels were somewhat possessive of what they had found, and chased the juveniles that came too close away. At least one of the juveniles came up to the door and wanted to come in, obviously having its first encounter with glass. I had never before noticed that whereas adult squirrels carry their tails behind themselves, the juveniles curve their tails over their backs (they look strange).
A few days ago, I learned how it is that squirrels are able to descend a tree headfirst--they are able to turn their ankles around so that the claws are able to dig in and thus hold them from falling headmost.

CShaveRR The pedestrian crossing over UP's main line in Lombard was shut down yesterday morning, and the tunnel, under construction for over a year but still some distance from completion, was opened so there's a path across the tracks. We had occasion to check it out 15 minutes after the closure of the crossing (the planking and signals were already gone): http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20150603/news/150609557/
While you may be happy to get the tunnel in Lombard, the Baltimore community of Lansdowne several years ago mounted successful efforts to have one that served their community closed - is was said to be the site of numerous assults and other crimes considering it's confined nature. Hope you have better results.

Mine's blue...
I have a blue one and a green one, both with the polka-dots. Trouble is, they are still packed away.
In the past I've had, well still have somewhere, one that is black with yellow polka-dots. One guy asked if I was an Iowa Hawkeye fan, their colors are black and gold. A van driver said she was going to put smiley faces on all the yellow dots.

In fairness to the other six, I didn't even play hockey, rugby was my exercise in masochism.

When your film is 'reviewed'...
Do you get any 'points' for making 'faces'(or not making them) at the camera?

Any rules (yet) against wearing one of those Groucho Marx black-framed glasses, nose, and mustache things (see http://www.amazon.com/Disguise-Costumes-glgro-Groucho-Glasses/dp/B002ZHQJ06 ), or a clown face mask ? Or a hockey goalie mask ? OK, I'll quit now . . .

The two unpatched remaining CNW engines are in Council Bluffs/Omaha for the joint UPHS/CNWHS annual meet. I had the pleasure of hauling them dead in consist to CB.

afternoon
Ns sent an eastbound frieght when I left work.Had a few green tractors on flatbed cars then other stuff.Swamp is still drying here.Chores to do.
Spent most of Monday on the road, hauling empty plastic barrels to Utica for use as signpost bases. And attending two meetings to boot.
The creeks and rivers here are rolling, with most the color of chocolate milk. I would suspect we got about an inch of rain in total, although some areas may have gotten more. We definitely needed the moisture, although it will have little effect on Lake Ontario or the St Lawrence River.
Lots of "routine" chores to do around the house today. It's a little misty yet, so I won't be spending a lot of time outside...
work not so bad today.Ns was clear when I left.Chores to do.
Well the rivers were high and some fields looked like lakes but we made it to Celina.Helped sisters with spring cleaning.Ma nature gave us a break.Helped Dad get his new TV set up.On the way home NS on the NKP line had a tanker train with CSX locos and anautorack train with 1 NS loco sitiing back to back in the broughton siding. There were no other signals for a passing train.Maybe something got gummed up in Fostoria or Bellevue.Work comes tomorrow.Time for bed.
Thanks, Sam!
It was a soggy day at the training center, but much was learned (I was just there to operate our pumper, but practice with that is never a bad thing). Now I've got to get ready for a trip south with as many barrels as I can fit on the trailer I borrowed.
We will be using the barrels to anchor signposts for the Thomas event at the end of June. I thought I was getting something in the 35 gallon range - these are 55 gallon versions. I'll be using some creative securement to get as many on the trailer as possible. Still, I'm thinking two trips will be necessary...

Congratulations ! to you and your family....Sounds like a wonderful way to start of the rest of your lives.... That young 'un will keep you all young.
Weather here in the"middle' has gotten Cold for May ! Low 50's this morning ! BUt no rain is in the forcast-for now- Seems to be moving East and Northeast.
WE finally have stared moving into the new place...Will be lots of work, About non yesterday, watched a Southbound Stacker, and last night what appeared to be a 'sand train' heading west or south at supper time. It is amazing to sit on the deck, and hear the 'sounds',;as the air reductions and applications make their way through the train. Things that are not so apparent whe a train is rolling by at speed. Trying to teach the grand kids that there is no one in the DPU's to wave back at them !
Looking like a nice day today, although there is a threat of thunderbumpers. We can use them, and except for some vacationers, the rain will be welcomed with open arms.
Very pleasant experience yesterday - we officially welcomed the newest member of the family. Lila was born in February, but came home from the hospital with her adoptive family (daughter and son-in-law). Yesterday, the judge's signature made it official - she's part of the family.
In what I now suspect was a brilliant ploy to keep the grandson/new brother (6) out of the way (but in a good way!), the judge let him sit at the bench while the paperwork was being finished. She also posed for pictures with the "new" family.
Given some of the stuff they have to deal with in Family Court, I have no doubt that events like adoptions are a bright spot in their calendars. She certainly made the most of it.
No rain. But nice breeze. Listened to the LFR put out a duplex fire - small child got hold of a candle and did some redecorating. Well, motels can be nice for awhile. Fortunately, our duplex has all adults. And hopefully flashlights.
work was busy today.Went and saw brother after work.Ns is replacing rail on the wabash south of Butler Indiana.Ns sent another scale test car eastbound.Chores to catch up on tomorrow.Mother nature is going to send us some thunderboomers too.

Where around White Oak bayou?
The people who had trash pick up tuesday morning didn't have to worry about bringing their cans back in....all the cans ended up in the bayou, or spread several streets over!

Contacted my brother yesterday, he mentioned that they're on relatively high ground above White Oak Bayou and had mostly street flooding, which had already subsided. Their biggest problem was getting around the abandoned cars and the various trash containers (including a dumpster) that managed to float into the streets.
Sounds like you got the worst of it, Ed! I'm glad we were out of Texas by that time yesterday (and nowhere near Houston--though that's one city I'd still like to visit in better times).I wish those billions of gallons could somehow be shipped to California, too. I guess they go through trillions for agricultural purposes alone. We got 0.4 inches of rain yesterday, and probably another inch today, with more coming tomorrow, possibly. I need it to dry off so's I can attack my poor shaggy lawn (though I have never seen it this green-looking!).Pat and I did some errand-running today, and I got to see a good variety of stuff on my hometown railroad. We also caught an empty crude-tank train on the CP, going over the new bridge at Bensenville. It's been mentioned here a few times. Irving Park Road, under the new CP bridge, has been reopened, but the clearance is still only 14'6". I think they'll dig it out a little more when they can lower the street to the west where the railroad crossing used to be.
