What I am wondering is whether this rash of oil train wrecks is an anomaly or just an average representation of the normal distribution of freight train wrecks.  If it is the latter, then what may be responsible for it seeming like an anomaly might be the fact that all fiery oil train derailments make the national news, whereas other freight train derailments of similar magnitude do not make the national news.

I would hate to pull the " Conspiracy Alarm" at this point.  Not knowing the statistics, or being able to understand their implications. I would leave that up to the 'Professionals' to make that call.

I agree.  While the recent rash of derailments does make one go "Hmmmmm?", knowledge that incidents like that LP tanker (discussed elsewhere on the forum) were most likely due to a failed bearing, etc, tends away from the conspiracy side.

Statistical anomolies do occur.  This bubble may be followed by a long dry spell, which would be a good thing...

One must also consider that had these wrecks involved unremarkable merchadise trains, they wouldn't have been newsworthy, except locally.

Sam,

This continuing rash of derailments and fires with oil trains carrying Bakken Crude has me wondering it they are coincidental or it there an outside cause.

Norm:

I would add just one caution though; I have lived long enough to believe in the old saying of "...Never say, Never.." only time will tell. and we seem to be living in a' Bizaro World' these days.[my2c]

I see that there are some photos starting to show up from the oil train wreck in Ontario on Saturday morning:

If it were not for 'Bad Liuck..."  CN is having a run of it.  The above Post is in the same area as last month's incident..In fact: That line was apparently opened on the 18th of Feb after repairs were made from the Feb incident.   FTL:"...CN Rail says its crews completed repairs to the tracks near Gogama, Ont. Tuesday night and re-opened the rail line to train traffic about 10:30 p.m.

"Trains have resumed running through the derailment area at a reduced speed due to the ongoing clean-up work at the site," wrote CN Public Affairs' Patrick Waldron.

"CN’s environmental team continues to work closely with the Ontario Ministry of Environment on mitigation, monitoring and restoration plans as part of the ongoing clean up."..." [snip]
