Okay, one that slipped my mind. The god ole' Boston and Maine minuteman. IMagine that guy on a nice and large loco painted right in the middle of a loco today.........And who could forget that georgeous red and yellow stripe arrangement? It looked good on all the first generation stuff (especially the BL2), although I think if they were around today, they would need something like the WC red and yellow, but it would still look great with that minuteman standing guard on the nose of a loco........Especially something big, like an SD40 (Or anything with 6 axles)

Imagine if AMTRAK (if they're still around) made a new paint scheme. Forget this phase 4, with the large blue, and the small red stripes, or the odd gream/teal splotched amtubes found on the NEC. Go back to the old pointless arrow (large red and blue stripe with equal thin white above, between, and under the stripe) but replace it with the newer and darker red an blue. That would be classy.

The ATSF warbonnet, and after that one that lots of people love to hate: the N-over-H block letters of the New Haven Line, ca. late 1950s.

Monad is the correct word for the NP "ying-yang" logo. The Chessie kitten may be the greatest, and I second the SP Sunset, and B&O Capitol logos. While I have problems with the new UP, their shield is the oldest, unchanged logo in US railroading. Let's not forget the WP Feather.

The big SOO LINE on the flanks of their boxcars and locos. Didn't leave any question to who owned them

I was thinking you meant "symbol" as in "Q110" or "M398". If you mean those symbols, mine would be Conrail's TVLA aka ATSF QNYLA, or, my all-time fave, TV-0X. :)

I still see "little" Conrail's logo in Detroit proudly emblazoned on signs at Livernois and North Yards as well as on MW vehicles and the ETT. Have to say that's my favorite logo.

My preference for terminal roads shows here: BRC's Y (Chicago symbol) with a belt around it, and IHB "Connects with all Chicago Railroads".

The NP's symbol comes from China and symbolizes the two forces of life, ying and yang (darkness and light). The symbol is called a Monad.

It's a tie in my book between Southern Pacific's Golden Pig Service and Rio Grande's Main Line Thru The Rockies logos.

The Buffalo Creek Railroad sticks out for me because when I first heard of the name I thought the symbol would be a mighty buffalo and it turned out to be a sack of flour.

The Frisco "Coonskin", mainly because the Frisco ran through my home town, and because my uncle worked for the Frisco. Also, the story (perhaps aprocryphal) about the origin of the "Coonskin" was interesting.

Oh heavens... what a question! The Santa Fe warbonnet; UP's winged shield... Chessie the kitten, and NS's thoroughbred... and CN's (and affiliated lines) Maple Leaf

The Canadian Pacific beaver atop the shield bearing the words "spans the world". And I wi***he CPR would go back to using their old maroon and gray paint scheme with that same herald.

I also miss the Great Northern's goat and the Burlington Route's herald which used to grace the sides of steam locomotive tenders. And now that the Union Pathetic has gobbled up the D&RGW and the C&NW, there's a couple more railroad logos that I miss seeing.

BN logo, because of the memories attached,.....from reading all of the other posts it appears that the Cheesie Logo is the most thought of,...this would be a good topic for a poll.

How about Rocky the Great Northern Goat or the CN lazy three. I believe that Rocky the GN goat lasted longer than any right up to 1970 BN merger. Have often thought that BN-SF should restore Rocky to there present day paint scheme would look like the crowning touch to a fine color scheme. They could feature Rocky in their advertising just as the GN did years ago It sure impressed small boys into becoming railfans when the talking goat ads were on early TV ads for the EMPIRE BUILDER and Great route for freight too.

The late, lamented Gainesville & Northwestern's swastika. It was from the days when that was a good luck symbol. It didn't help; the railroad ceased operations about the time Hitler came to power.
