With all due respect to all of you, because I am a newcomer,

How about the predecessor of BCRail, now taken over by CN: It was originally the Pacific Great Eastern, from Vancouver to Prince George in the north. "PGE" was twisted into "Please go Easy" or "Prince George Eventually" due to ridiculous political delays in its construction.

I thoroughly enjoy all the incredible knowledge on the forums. Thanks, folks!

Well, my favorite RR poem would have to be about the New York & New England RR's famous "White Train" of the 1890's:

Without a jar, or roll or antic,
Without a stop to Willimantic,
The New England Limited takes it's way
At three o'clock on every day.

Maids and matrons, daintily dimited,
Ride every day on the New England Limited;
Rain or snow ne'er stops its flight,
It makes New York at nine each night.

One half of the glories have not been told
Of that wonderful train of white and gold
Which leaves every day for New York at three
Over the N.Y. & N.E.

As for bad names, I have the "No Hope" (New Haven), and the "Hoot, Toot & Whistle" (Hoosac Tunnel & Wilmington), not to mention "To Hell & Back" (Toronto, Hamilton & Buffalo) and "Erie Lacko'money" (Erie Lackawanna).

The New Haven had a bunch of advertising slogans, like:

"The Key To New England"
"The Aristocrat of New England Transportation"
"Train Yourself To Relax"
"Center To Center Convienence"

But for my favorite slogan, I wonder what it could possibly be???

No, Locomutt - I never heard the one about NF&G, but I can imagine . . .

And nobody has come around with "The Milwaukee Road - America's Remorseful Railroad".

One line from a formal hearing on a local freight crew I heard about from years ago, before the days of speedometers on engines: "well, we couldn't have going very fast because we just had gotten on overtime".
