Today (February 15) at least 9.5 hours passed before a UP train, a westbound stack train, finally showed up at 16:43.  The cause was apparently a CN derailment at the crossing of the UP West Line in West Chicago.   BNSF was not much busier, with only four trains passing during that time, between 10:44 and 13:55, two in each direction.

Watched Rochelle for 6.5 hours today, Jan 28, 2021. Saw 10 BNSF and 7 UP trains between 09:30 and 16:00. UP way down, it seemed.

A couple weeks later it was back to "normal".  On February 10 there were 9 UP and 6 BNSF trains during a 7-hour daylight period between about 11:00 and 18:00.

The live chat on some of the webcams hosted on youtube is also nice.

Sometimes as good as the video itself...

Several of the cams now have folks logging the trains that pass, with ancillary information like origination/destination.

There are those who will "chase" a train through several cams.

I make no secret of my like for the Deshler cam.  There is also a cam about 30 miles south of me on a CSX line that only sees 2-4 trains a day.  It is sponsored by a weather site because it's in the middle of the eastern Lake Ontario snow belt.

An I can remember when this post was really active.

That was likely when the Rochelle webcam wasn't subscriber-only.

It is not subscriber only, but you do have to have a login account.

There are many more webcams out there now. and I do like the ability to rewind and watch historical footage vs. having to catch things live.

The live chat on some of the webacams hosted on youtube is also nice.

I wonder how those flange-bearing diamonds in Deshler are doing, and whether something like that would be useful here.  If they lessen the pounding, it might stretch out the service life.

The Deshler diamonds have just undergone a renewal of the wear parts.  Trains are back up to the 40 MPH timetable speed (E-W) after a long period of 25 MPH.

From what I've seen, the diamond has required only an occasional bolt tightening since its installation almost two years ago.

And the only noise you hear from the diamond is a soft "whir."  Any banging is due to adjacent insulated joints for the signal system.

Are these ties along the right side of the ROW?

Reminded me of the speeder parking tracks.

I'm guessing that they might be supports for the construction of a new set of diamonds, to take place Goodness-only-knows-when.  That litte stretch of UP Track 1 just this side of the diamonds (just shy of the concrete ties) looks pretty rough.

I wonder how those flange-bearing diamonds in Deshler are doing, and whether something like that would be useful here.  If they lessen the pounding, it might stretch out the service life.

Can you guys access the web cam on your phones?

I tried the link way back at the beginning of this thread, and I just get an error message.

I have never tried with my phone - fact of the matter, I don't want to deal with forums on my phone.

I am fat thumbs on the phone's keyboard and it isn't worth my frustrations.

I am wondering why there still appears to be a port-a-pot partially obscured by the signal bungalow to the right of the diamonds?  Has Rochelle become a designate 'bathroom break' for both carriers? [/sarcasm]

Considering the street has multiple private driveways and it is labeled as 2nd Ave, I think it is a city street repaving project.

I think any proper street/road construction calls for a base to be put down and left to settle for a period of time, then the paving put over it so they don't have to come back and redo it next year.  Thus that period of settling appears to be a "why is it taking so long" complaint to those that don't understand the need for a good foundation and it is cheaper to let the base settle than to run heavy machinery over and over it trying to compact it.
