CShaveRRThen I heard a noise that sounded a lot like a freight train.
I was walking back from our banquet hall last night after letting in a group having a meeting there. As I reached the end of my driveway, I started to hear a loud rushing sound, then noticed a nearby rooftop with large wet spots. The raindrops were huge, and I managed to get under my porch roof before it really let loose. Those were some big raindrops.
I once had a friend who described such rain as "coming down in #2 washtubs."

We've gotten over three inches of rain in the past 24 hours. Lots of fog hanging around this morning, will probably be washed away by more rain. Pat and I want to catch a concert in Millennium Park this evening (Eighth Blackbird), and I think we should bring umbrellas and towels. The book I've been working on for a friend of mine is finally edited; I'll mail it today. The Lombard Historical Society's newsletter is in the process of being printed and collated; that may also mail today...by tomorrow, for sure. We were working at the Historical Society offices yesterday when the first rain hit. Skies got very dark, then there was thunder and lightning (not in that order, obviously), and it let go. Then I heard a noise that sounded a lot like a freight train. Pat heard it, too. However, tornadoes do not sound two longs, a short, and a long for crossings.
Animals are smarter than that. Too much cholesterol.

Mookie Joe - zoo food is excellent. They serve animal crackers! Norm - more rain working up west of us. Have no clue where it will end up, but speculate it will be heading north at least for awhile.

Mookie,
Do they serve 'people crackers' to the animals?

A little over 4/10" last night, and some areas got wind damage. We escaped. Looks like we may get more tonight, but I'm not sure it'll be as bad as last night.
Southern Michigan got washed this afternoon. A good gully washer just passed through. Not bad enough to cause any damage though.
afternoon
thunderstorms in the area.Matt did make it back from the Zoo.Guess they decided they had enough animals to feed.Ns had an autorack train waiting to go west.Seems they like csx have been parking trains as well.Chores to do.

Deshler Ohio-crossroads of the B&O Matt eats your fries.YUM! Clinton st viaduct undefeated against too tall trucks!!!(voted to be called the "Clinton St. can opener").
Jen.....Glad to hear all went well in your area.
We too have been in a muggy, hot oven now for several days. Seems it's continuing again today....Light threat is over a wide area for severe weather. Noted 79 degrees when I first looked early this morning.

MC, it is well that it was not a striped kittycat that you bumped into and you annoyed it. #5 hit one of those sometime early this morning (I think it was when I woke, briefly about two). Had we been on time, and gotten into Salt Lake City last night and not a 5:21 this morning, we probably would have missed it.
Mookie, I do not know what time we went through Lincoln Monday night, but we were an hour late at Ottumwa--and three hours late getting into Denver. We lost more time there because the UP was doing some work on the track at the Big Ten Curve, and we had to wait until that company told us we could leave. I went to sleep before we reached Glenwood Springs, and woke as we were coming in to Provo. #6 was also late, for she was standing in the station here when we arrived--the first time I have seen two passenger trains in Salt Lake City at the same time.
I did enjoy eating with Carl; when we left the station very few people were in the first class lounge, but when we got back there were more people than I ever seen in there, and I was not able to log on to the Wifi (too many other users?).
Now, two weeks of mail and newspaper to catch up on.

mudchicken Survey crew in Ft Collins bumped into a LARGE kittycat today. Kitty didn't meow, didn't growl....It ROARED! Steel toed-boots suddenly became track shoes. (Nikes don't fail me now!!) Topo survey might be a few days late.

Looks like a baseball game above Sir C's home. I can see the wind up from here. This may terrorize a lot of states before it is done!
Wild night here in the north country. Severe T'storm watch, then cancelled, then special weather statement, then severe T'storm watch, and now a tornado warning just to the south of Watertown.
Hearing a lot of wind damage calls, especially near Lake Ontario.
I think the worst of it is past us now, but the rain will continue for a while.
muggy here in nw ohio.765 came through Stryker on the way to Toledo.Tomorrow they go to be with sister 1225 in Michigan.Tired dad.

Q: We are fine. The storms cut off the eastern part of the state & went on a diagonal from south to north. Today it is sunny and humid-supposed to hit high 90's & stiff wind se @ 20.
Poor Pilger (a town hit by twin tornadoes). One of those small farm towns that make up the fabric of Nebraska. Small town NE hasn't fared well this year!!
BC: I was checking my eyelids for holes about Amtrak time.
Fishing for me was trying to read the paper in Millie & keep it from going out her window.
Saw our favorite blue heron about 50' down the bank. It flies in about every time we fish in that area. (Looking for birdseed?). ;)
And mama duck showing off her 10 teenagers to the Driver. He always seems to have to wait for a duck xing before he can cast!
.....Jen, wondering the same about you and Driver. Terrible, stuff being shown across your State. So, our Prayers are with those that were in the path of destruction....!
If you're still awake, SJ, Brother Johnny should be headed through there shortly. I had a good lunch with him, and he's had a most satisfactory trip so far (though he did call us to say that they were still in the station about 40 minutes after their departure time--talking to Pat must have worked, because they started moving while he was still on the phone).
Tornadoes all missed us, for now. I just got done unclogging downspouts in a downpour. We got about 6" of rain Sunday, and probably another 3" (?) this afternoon, and it's still pouring cats and dogs. We've got streets, highways, and interstates under water right now. On the bright side- boy is my lawn green! Even the weeds look healthy.
Thanks to Chris / CopCarSS for my avatar.
Calling Murphy! Huge tornadoes in NE Nebraska right in your area. R U OK?
Fishing first; train watching second. Should have reversed the order. Sat and watched all the trains (lots) early in the lightning and rain and fished later when the sun came out.
evening
muggy here in NW Ohio.Ns was getting ready to move cars when I left work.Had to give birthday hugs here in Defiance.Didn't see anything on CSX.Chores to do.
And the San Antonio Spurs defeat the Miami Heat 104-87 to win the NBA Finals!!!!!!!
What a series!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Haven't been successful in any of my endeavors today. I was going to head out to Gary with the manuscript and get to it between trains, but the "check engine" light came on when I was only a couple of miles from home. So that scrubbed that trip, and I have to take the car in before I catch the train to meet Johnny. I got through another 10-12 pages of the manuscript before activities around here distracted me.Johnny, If your train arrives on time and if our car is back in business, I've got an idea for lunch that I hope you like. If not, we have the E&C to fall back on! (The Cardinal was on time last week...don't know how often that happens!)
Look what came back this morning in Bedlam-on-the-Potomac! I have choices again!
I spent last night in a good hotel that is more or less across the street from Union Station, and enjoyed the Irish meals its restaurant provides.
I leave on the Cardinal at 11:05 (it is due in from New York at 10:10--does it take that long to change engines? I have not checked on the interval for the trains to the South). So, except for a time in Chicago tomorrow, I will be out of touch with the world until Wendesday morning.
Get that book editing done, Carl! Perhaps we can go to the Elephant and Castle again?
good morning
Happy Fathers Day to all the other Dad's. Matt enjoyed his birthday. We stopped in Marion and they also had a slideshow.Today we are going to visit a local friend who opens up his backyard garden layout.Nice weather today.Possible thunderboomers and muggy tomorrow.
Nope - rain to the west of us about 100 miles and heartburn here.
Ah yes - overnite - nice, normal thunder shower.
The 2014 NYS Fire Chief's event is in the books. Got to see the cab and chassis for our new pumper (due here in July), took some good classes, and, as usual, spent more money than I should have. Got some good stuff, though.
I'm beat.
Looks like Madam La Mook had some rain tonight. Now that the weekend is over, the sun is going to come out here... (Wait - tomorrow is Sunday! A decent weekend day!)
When people were enjoying (or not) their encounters with trains yesterday, I was up in the Land of No Trains (and no Internet). I had fun, though, hosting a party for high-school classmates (we're past our 45th post-graduation year) at our cottage. Nothing even remotely official--just four girls who joined me and Pat. Norris, are you in Chicago for long? If you're still here tomorrow, please say something early! I may be looking for some Father's Day action (it can't involve my own offspring, as they've sprung off to different states). If not, I hope you enjoyed your time here, and saw a lot more than I did!
And Johnny, I hear ya! I'll try and get away again. However, I made a promise that I would be finished editing a 288-page book this week, and I'm barely past page 10 so far!
