     Spatial relationships.....

In my job, I work with all kinds of dimensions and sizes.  I can measure your house by standing in the yard, and figure out how many shingles it takes to do your roof.  Then why, oh why, am I so bad at wrapping Christmas presents?  I don't get it.

The good news is, we got our yearly end of January thaw today.  I can hardly wait to see what next month brings.  Ho Ho Ho.

Got a card from Nebraska today

Same here.  Striking likeness, too!

Colddddddd.

Weather station shows -10F, but the temp sensor on the anemometer, usually used to measure wind chill, shows -22F, and there's no wind...  It's about 15 or so feet off the ground.  Saw -15F on the truck thermometer on the way home from town.

Gonna be a cold one!

Christmas party with my former co-workers tomorrow.  Good to see most of them, although they've got a lot of new faces, too.

Would I need to poke some holes, so the ducks could still get air?

Yeah, but poke the holes before you put the ducks in.  Unless you're feeling lucky.

Major fire across the border in Kingston today - large apartment building under construction likely burned to the ground.

The big news, though, was the construction crane operator, who had to crawl out to the end of the boom to escape the fire.  After two hours freezing out there (temps in the single digits F), he was rescued by a Canadian Forces helicopter crew - very dramatic.  Video here (among other places): http://www.krock1057.ca/

The first indication I had of the fire was when I heard the Gananoque fire deparment paged for a "general alarm" (ie, y'all come), but instead of giving the address, they were told to report to the station.  I can only gather at this point that they responded to Kingston as well.  Several volunteer stations around Gan were put on standby.  I was out running a couple of errands, but got some info from a friend while out and checked it out when I got home.

Probably every bit as dramatic as the similar incident in Georgia a couple of years ago.

Supposed to warm up and rain by the weekend...

I dunno.  Poking holes in the ducks sounds counterproductive.

It is in the mid-fifties here in Southeast Missouri.  Heavy rain is expected for the weekend.  The possibility of two-plus inches of rain by the time it is done.  The melting snow has the ground saturated, so, I expect local and flash flooding could be an issue.  We went from sixteen inches of snow two weeks ago, now this.  Living here is sure interesting when it comes to the weather.  Smile

January thaw came early to southeast Michigan. Supposed to get some freezing rain through the next few days. Food in the fridge so I'm all set.

Ol' Man Winter has come again, with snow this morning--and closing the Salt lake City Airport. It is still snowing, and we expect more yet. The major streets in the city have already been plowed once, and they will need more attention.

But my driver can't hear a whisper with 2 hearing aids, either.

Have you tried going under "View" on a toolbar at the top of the screen and choosing a bigger text?

Some of the runways at the SLC airport have been opened. 6.7 inches of snow was reported at the airport, giving us a total (a little over 13 inches), so far, of more than the average snowfall in December. More snow is predicted for Friday. If this keeps up, we will not worry about having enough water to bathe next summer--and if there is an early snowmelt, the pumps that were bought and installed going on thirty-one years ago, may be put to use to pump water from the Great Salt Lake over the hills to the west. May we not have fishing in the streets of the city again.

Johnny,

It surprises me that KSLC (that's Salt Lake International for those who don't speak aviation)  would close for snow. I live near, and worked at for thirty years, Oakland County International. It's basically a reliever for Detroit Metro, but is never closed for weather. They have the necessary equipment and manpower to keep it open. Even in the eighties whe we had Superbowl here and an ice-storm to boot the airport was open.

....Taking my first look out the window this morning we found bare ground...{Actually grass}...and that grass was mowed just a bit over 2-weeks ago.  About 4" of snow has been here with us for about 2 weeks now.  Temps have simply too cold for it to melt.

48 degrees much earlier this morning...and that did the job of putting it down the drain overnight.  But for the weekend...not sure...Thought it was going to be about 3" of rain, however I've seen some pink on weather maps since that report....Guess we'll just hope no ice storm forms....

And Larry, I watched that helicopter rescure of the fellow out on the crane boom yesterday....Outstanding job...!

Norm, freezing rain came before the snow did--and the runways were a bit too slick. I understand that a cargo plane had trouble when landing, so the runways was closed to use until all the solid water could be removed.

We are having a respite from snow today, but more is expected tomorrow. I do not recall that snow is expected next week, but we have enough white on the ground for a white Christmas.

I live about 800 feet above the valley floor, and the north-south streets are quite steep for the last mile or so as I drive up. The city did do a good job yesterday morning in getting the main streets cleared, even the street that comes up east of my house was clear when I came back home after having to go down yesterday morning.

Joe maybe power is getting short. We have had some NS units on our all CSX line here.  A real surprise.  To top it off the BNSF intermodal  haulage trains that are almost always 3 - 4  BNSF units have many running with 2 - 3 units.  All CSX trains have been just 2 units with some appearing underpowered.

morning

getting ready to go to G+G house for a family gathering. Matt is excited. As far as power we call some trains "one unit wonders". When they stall or breakdown the bosses always wonder what happened. Sometimes csx borrows the y101 engine here in Defiance to help out.

Norm, I agree with you. Sometimes, I forget to set the type so I can read it, in the typeface and size I like (Times New Roman, 14 point) and either start all over, or try to remember to reset everything after I have finished writing. Incidentally, this typeface uses less ink when it is printed than the popular sans serif one uses.

A little more snow this morning, but even more is promised for today. The forecast for the coming week is no more snow--and I will not be surprised if we again have a cloud of smog over the valley by the 25th. It is something to see the smog that I am about to enter when I have to go down the hill.

This morning, when I started to go out to get my paper, Katie offered to go out and bring it in for me. Often, she is not at this end of the house when I go out. It's nice to have such help. Tonight, she is serving dessert for a progressive dinner; I will go upstairs for that.

Mookie,

The way I've been doing it is type it, then highlight it and change the font and size.

I do it that way, too.  But instead of Times New Roman, I have Georgia on my mind.

This is my Christmas Memo.  I don't have enough excitement to do a whole note or letter!  Besides, I can't remember what I did yesterday let alone the past year.

Well, being the domestic goddess that all know I am NOT, I changed the bed today.  Changed it into a '65 Mustang convertible.  Kisses  Driver will be thrilled until bedtime.

We have one of those "temper"mental Swedish beds - we love it, but it weighs about 700 pounds - and that is just the top mattress.  If you have never made a bed, skip this.  Or if you have made a bed, you know what I am talking about and we are done!

Merry Christmas from Mookie and The Driver!  Angel

All of you out there driving in winter conditions, please be careful. Ice, black ice and snow are wreaking havoc out here on the high plains. On the 134 mile trek back into Denver from the jobsite tonite, I counted 19 accidents, some pretty ugly. A construction contractor working opposite us lost a 22 yr old employee this morning in a rollover/rear end collision on I-76. Rough day. Ice fog is nasty stuff. Top speed of 12 mph on a normally 75mph trip on an already long day makes for long drives.

Bad enuf getting the "survey widow" lecture from BossHen.
