My other hobby is my career. I am involved in public safety and have a keen intrest in fire service history, apparatus photography, and being a member of several fire fighting related clubs. I am a correspondent for FIRE APPARATUS JOURNAL, a bi-monthly magazine of fire apparartus happenings around the country, and TURN-OUT magazine, the magazine of the International Association of Fire Buffs. I also maintain a web site to show my collection of fire apparartus photos taken all over the world over the last 30 years (www.franksfireengines.com).

I am busy raising our newly adopted 3 year old son Dominic, from the Ukraine, I have taken him railfanning already and he can say box car and engine! My other hobby is my wife, house, 2 rescued greyhounds, and 2 cats. I am an avid reader of history books. And if this isn't enough, I am building an N gauge layout set along they eastern shore of Nova Scotia between Halifax and Canso. I am also working on a Lionel layout.

I collect Matchbox size diecast public safety vehicles and this collection is over 200! I also collect die-cast fire apparatus of the Boston Fire Department and the New York City Police Dept. I live to watch railfan video and have a collection that has about 50 tapes and DVD's. And last but not least I collect photos, records and information on the NYPD's Emergency Service Units (Police Heavy Rescue and Swat Team).

If I have a few spare hours, you can usually find the family, sans cats anywhere along the southwest coast of Maine on the beach, year round.

Well after collecting model trains ( I have 85 different locos. ) and watching the real ones, I collect die-cast model construction and mining equipment. Maybe I should take up remodeling the house so I can have some more space for my stuff. The wife would like that too.

BTW, you left out George Jones. If you have never heard his latest gospel collection then you are missing out on some great music. THe Hee-Haw gospel collection is a great one also.

Other hobbies include watching Cincinnati Reds baseball games, and watching
University of Kentucky basketball games. Listening to John Denver, S&G, Jim
Nabors, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Reba McIntyre, Statler Brothers, etc. Also like
the GOOD OLD GOSPEL, and some of the "New Gospel. And I really love to
hear Loretta Lynn. Yeah, I really go for the "old" country music.

Anybody know what ever happened to Donna Fargo? Haven't seen or heard
anything of hers for a loooong time[:(]

Model railroading is one of my biggest, then railfanning, then probably reading, and also keeping my grades up. One of the most important things to me really, I make sure that I keep my grades up as good as I can.

I have a decent size collection of Conway Twitty ("Hello Darlin'")music, along with some posters, books, and photos. Saw him on TV when he got the "Living Legend" award (around 1988) and instantly liked his music. If only I had that growl of his, the women would go nuts. lol

My dad worked for Pepsi for 34 years so I try to pick up Pepsi collectibles if they are cheap enough. I don't get into Pepsi collecting as much.

That is about all I get into besides the railroad thing.

I guess if you call following baseball (Yankees!) a hobby then thats one of them.
I have been playing drums since the age of 5 and listening to music is a huge passion.
Reading is also essential.

If fire and EMS counts as a hobby, that's a close tie with things rail, and may take the lead from time to time. Of course I have a model railroad! I'm not sure I do enough photography it to qualify as a hobby, but I tend to think I'm a step above the common "snapshot" photog.

I do like to pick a little on the guitar and banjo - better on guitar, but it's all fun. Mostly folk and folk/rock, with a little bluegrass worked in. Have worked backstage (mostly lights/sound) on more than a few stage productions. Onstage work limited to a couple of bit parts - I'm not a ham as far as the stage goes.

No grandkids to spoil - yet.

We are a varied lot, what? For me... railroad technical stuff and some model railroading, flying (well... it was. lost my medical; can't see too well any more), music (classical, some 'folk' (e.g. Rankins, Tom Rush, Joni Mitchell... 'Atlantic Canada'), ballet (watching -- no way am I going on stage any more!!! -- but my son and his fiancee dance professionaly in Montreal), reading (particularly history!), restoring a house (not as old as Kev/45144's, though!) -- 2 cats and 2 horses

Keeping a 400 year old house looking good, entertaining Mrs P, 2 Pyrenean Sheepdogs and 2 Cats, Wargaming, Military Modelling and in between all that I have to work as well

Ok Gut reactions here. I would say the need to build. We tend to want to build bigger and better than what everyone else. There are people that seem to need to destroy though I counter that most destruction is contingent on humans need for bigger and better,ie.Tearing down a smaller building to make a larger building.

2. Also: Dabbling in the stock market --BNSF up over 25% since I bought it (most stock picks have NOT been that good)
3. Treasurer for our Investment Club, the DOWS (Dynamos of Wall Street). Like the RRs Chicago Rock Island & Pacific, or the St. Louis-San Francisco, our ambitious name outpaces our results.

Let's see......
I destroy things or help to do so at work...so that covers the destruction stuff...
I build things...woodwork, home improvement stuff....again destruction
I do build model trains...
I spend alot of time with the kid's sports..coaching, helping etc...
I try to hunt..but in SoCal that ain't too easy, unless you know someone or got more money than sense....so I kill clays and targets when I get the chance...there's that destruction thing again..csx may be on to something
I'm supposed to be restoring a Chevy pickup (see above)

Ok Gut reactions here. I would say the need to build. We tend to want to build bigger and better than what everyone else. Model Railroading of course, second in line is reading and debating philosophy. I don't know if you can count that as a hobby or not. It's my major and I'm also part of my colleges Philosophy club. My other love is Music, recording and playing it. I'll leave you with this, What is the most common trait among humans, Fear or laziness?

Did you two take up model railroading before or after starting railroading?

I have an uncle who used to be a switchman for Southern Pacific, he had a model railroad for a little while (about the time I was born).

long befor... but i dont model so much for the trains as i do for the sence of realiszam in a layout....i like to make the seans look as real as you can..mountans that look like they should be thier..not becouse someone wanted a tunel on the layout...
i use to get into detailing locomotives..but that is such a pain in the butt..and besides..for the time involved and the after market parts you have to buy..its just easier for me to go and spend the money on a loco that has all the extras on it from the factory
