Whats your other Hobbies (Look Mookie!)
Posted by bnsfkline on Tuesday, September 28, 2004 9:09 AM
I know that everyone else on these here forums have other intrests besides trains. What are your other intrests. Things like Sports, TV, Trying to get LC to give Jim H. his RS18, Roller Blading, Playing Golf, or Going out to pick up women.

I know that Mookies other hobby is her Dear Cat that she would jump into a pool of Molton Lava to save named Mookie. (Sorry Jen, Couldnt Resist),

Johns (The guy sitting in Jail for Failing Spanish and throwing his computer onto a BNSF Train, and was fined $26.50, aka Railpac) other hobby is Football, He and his mom are St. Louis Rams Season Ticket holders.

I don't really know about Jim H....

Raakone's other hobbies (He hasnt been on here for a while) includes drawing, writting stories and going to coffee bars in his home City of Montreal.

This one will be a shocker, but I have several other hobbies than trains. But the number 1 non train hobby that I am into is....... Japanese Animation, AKA Anime. You guys werent expecting that, were ya? But, my Railroad Videos currently out number my Anime Videos on a 2-to-1 bases. My current favorite series is Galaxy Express 999, which is about a train powered by a Southern Pacific GS-4 type 4-8-4 locomotive that travels through outer space. My other hobbies include Going out to Baseball games, Shooting Video, and Relaxing at our families homested in Northwestern New Mexico........

......Well you know some of my hobbies, but what about you guys, What are your other intrests, I know that you guys must have at LEAST 1 other hobby, But if its railroad that your intrested in, than you have no life...........

Adios for know, and remember:

Trains are my life!

I'm retired due to disability and my kids are grown. In the past at various times I was into building models as a kid, radio, playing in a rock band, electronics, computers, and R/C airplanes.

Now it's just the trains...
(oh yeah, and attractive women whatever their age.)

I crochet afghans and read. Like biographies, Christian romances, mysteries
(especially Lilian Jackson Braun), and sometimes the other romances.
Every once in a while I'll read a science fiction book of locomutt's if I can get
into the plot.

Besides being a railfan and toy train collector, I do have several other interests. Acting is big interest of mine. I've always been in school drama and would like to purue this interest further. I also enjoy writing and have done a couple of screenplays. I also love to read (mainly mysteries and WWII books). And, of course, I enjoy movies, TV and music, but who doesn't?

I live and breathe railroads, with a special interest in freight cars--current and historic. Outside of that (or perhaps in connection with that), I'm a bicyclist--not competitive, but I manage to pedal at least a couple thousand miles a year. At home, I'm processing (and corresponding about) my freight car observations and listening to classical music.

Hummm...
Which one, which one....
I know!

Besides getting paid to kick cars in a nice and busy classification yard, I hand craft writing insturments, rollerball, ball point and fountain pens, and mechanical pencils.
I also make wood and acrylic pocket watches, and do wood turning.
(Shameless plug here, go to my profile and click on my website to see samples)
Currently working on a line of aluminum pens and penciles...

All that leaves is the collecting of old calvary sabers, riding horses, rebuilding our house, and helping my wife raise and breed her boa constrictors...
Oh, and somewhere in there, we managed to have three daughters...kinda a career in its self!

Got any good Anime you'd like to suggest? I havent seen anything remotely good since Cowboy Bebop came to the US. I really cant stand the rather repeditive recent imports.

BTW, GE-999 is not based on an SP GS4 or any other American Engine, its based on a Japan National Railways JNR class J-50 engine common during the 1940's and 50's, same with the passenger cars. Look up old photos from Japanese steam train era and you'll see almost identical trains. The creator of the series used his childhood memories of steam engines as the base reference and those were from Japanese steamers.

   Have fun with your trains

I've recently had a go at water colour painting, with help from a close friend who has been painting water clours, oils and acrylics for the last 20 years.

(He's been very patient with me. I finished one recently that I ended up getting framed. Turned out all right after all - shock...)

Enjoy gardening too - a sub-tropical climate really helps with that...

Travel to places I have never been. (By train is half the fun). Working the yard and garden in the summer. Up keep to the 110 year old converted carrige house/barn that is our home. (To the extent the work is within my limited skills). Cooking. (The late Julia Child is my hero). Keeping up with lives of 4 1/2 adult children, (Matt is only 17), the spouses of the two married, and the lone, terribly spoiled (by my wife), grandchild, Lilly.

Other interests; humor- written, spoken, drawn, performed, if it meets my "high" standards. (Most network sitcom's don't, but the Simpsons, Southpark and Futurama do).

I could describe myself as a Renaissance man if "interest" could be substituted for "knowledgable". I also know that I am not qualified for that label, because I have to look up the spelling of the word.

In the winter here, my hobby is staying warm.

Whats crazy about that?
I had a layout for a long time, still build models.
When time and space permit, I have plans to construct a seperate building just for the railroad.
One of our trainmasters scratch built a B30-7A,(cabless, B unit, B 30) which would knock your eys out!

Did you two take up model railroading before or after starting railroading?

I have an uncle who used to be a switchman for Southern Pacific, he had a model railroad for a little while (about the time I was born).

I work at a hobby store so when you say "other " hobbies its all in a days work for me. I have gas RC cars and rockets as well but alot of my time goes to The Rocks first sub being built in my basement, double track and comuter trains and all. I custom build layouts in my spare time as well and have completed 9 in the past 5 years of different scales from G to N. I would like to be a corespondent for Trains ( look out Mark here I come! :) and concider myself a student of DPM, as I have followed his works closely. I have an extensive collection of train books, magazines, movies, slides, prints, and just about anything you could think of in between. If i dont have it just give me a little time to rustle up the bushes to find it. Long live the Rock!!!

long befor... but i dont model so much for the trains as i do for the sence of realiszam in a layout....i like to make the seans look as real as you can..mountans that look like they should be thier..not becouse someone wanted a tunel on the layout...
i use to get into detailing locomotives..but that is such a pain in the butt..and besides..for the time involved and the after market parts you have to buy..its just easier for me to go and spend the money on a loco that has all the extras on it from the factory

Model Railroading of course, second in line is reading and debating philosophy. I don't know if you can count that as a hobby or not. It's my major and I'm also part of my colleges Philosophy club. My other love is Music, recording and playing it. I'll leave you with this, What is the most common trait among humans, Fear or laziness?
