Spending tomorrow on Uncle Pete's line between I-25 and the steel mill helping another crew identify stuff for the highway rubber-tired tribe so they don't impact the railroad adversely. If there is lightening, we sit in the truck and get bored until it passes. (Can't wear the tinfoil hardhat and raingear in t-storms. - Frowned on for some reason. - $50K worth of GPS gear becomes a giant lightning rod....) Not much lightning here, so the boys are not glued to Boss Hen like black furry Velcro.

However - I did read one bright newsy note. The Jersey fire was stopped by digging a trench and filling it with sand! Brilliant! I would have never thought of that. And that is the one thing they have a lot of - sand.
On the other side - Colorado had all those fires and no water. Water finally arrived!
Hey Tree - if you are lurking - is sand ever used in other cases of remote location fires? If you can't helicopter water in - can you helicopter in sand? A pound of sand vs a pound of water - same weight?
I know - where do we get the sand. AZ/NM for CO, I guess? NE has sand pits, but they now have fish in them.

Water frequently travels by helicopter. Some choppers have tanks built into their underside and must be filled on the ground.
The huge "Skycranes" usually have a large tube hanging down that they can use to fill from ponds and lakes (the subject of a "Mythbusters" episode),
And a device called a "Bambi bucket," essentially a large canvas bucket hanging below the bird, sees frequent use. The Bambi bucket can be fitted to virtually any helicopter capable of handling the load, a handy feature.
One advantage of water over sand in this application is that retardants and extinguishing agents can be added to the water.
Another is that water is easier to move than sand - which would require some mechanical means (conveyor belts, shovels) to move from point A to point B.
Of course, there are fixed wing aircraft, but that's another story.

Yesterday was my getting things ready for the redo of the attic for Audrey. That meant finding even MORE junk ending up you-know-where, that's right...MY space. These extra 'things' came out of two...mmmmm....storage rooms we forgot existed up there. So, even more junk to haul off to the recyclers....
Today will be finishing off the prep and getting some supplies to start laying in a new floor up there....

Saw trains late this morning. Heard Amtrak around 8 am going east. They come later due to the dew point in Colorado. Lots of southbound traffic - not much going to Joe. Even read the tankers 111a? I think that is right. Who knows any more!

Ahh, two days on the railroad in the books. I'm beat. Our PA system is out of order, so that means a lot of interfacing with the passengers to clue them into upcoming sights, etc. I like interfacing with the passengers - but right now that means staying on the move, so the feet and legs take a beating on the "rolling deck."
Next two outings will be as engineer - I get to just sit there and take orders...
It was cool in the mountains, but warmed up to near 70 both days. Stayed dry, too. The rain arrived at the house at about the same time I did.
I'm back in Shreveport after a 7 hour drive up from San Antonio.
Weather was nice.....sure wish we could get some rain down here though.

Y'know, Murray - I love watching House Hunters. But one of the complaints is always that it is about a 30-45 min drive to work. Guess people like you just don't exist in their world.
I just groan over some of the "problems."
