Tree - if I catch him eating peanuts, he will be known as a squirrel.  He has food and water to wash it in available.

BOC - you know - he was kind of cute.  His fur wasn't quite as dark as an adult, so figure he was about 3/4 grown.

Just like trains, I have a healthy respect for wildlife - their teeth and claws are much sharper than mine!

Tried a different city fishing hole.  Moderately sized lake not too far out of center of city.  Driver caught a couple of bass @ regular lake then we tried this much older lake where I fished as a kid.  He caught some carp, fed some turtles corn and then caught a "fingerling" bullhead.  That was the most fun.  Easiest to get off the hook, too!  I stayed in Millie out of the sun and "bobber-watched".  He had two and they would both go down @ same time.

I guess not much has changed in the past many years - a hook, a bobber and a can of corn - cheap thrills.

Moo...

A can of corn? I thought corn came in fruit jars, though it could be bought in a bottle in an ABC store in North Carolina.Smile

You buy your corn likker at the fair?

One time that I was hitch-hiking home from college, I was picked up near Erwin, Tennessee by a well-dressed man who was not much for conversation. I asked him what he did, and he did not answer me. There was another car waiting at the North Carolina state line, and my driver backed his car beside the other car, got out and as he was getting out told me to stay inside. He opened his trunk, and I felt the rear end of the car rise up as he took things out of the trunk. after he closed the truck, he told me that the other man would take me on into Asheville. I did not ask my new driver any question about his occupation; I had an idea that he was operating outside the law. It is well that we were not stopped by any police.

This change of drivers was a bit different from the one I had had when I went home for Christmas my first year in college. Then, I was picked up in Erwin by a man driving a truck; he was careful to avoid the spots of ice on the road, but after we came up behind another truck driver who was staying on the right side of the road we came to a stop behind the other truck because the pipe that carried the water from the spring that came out of the mountainside right at Sams Gap beneath the road had filled with ice, and the ice that was on the right side of the road stopped him, and we could not go around him. After a while, a car came up and the truck driver who had picked me up asked the driver of the car if he would take me on as far as he could--so I did get on to Asheville in a different vehicle. I did not get home that night, but was able to spend it in the home of one of my college friends in Montreat, which is a little bit east of Asheville.

I just remembered another explanation of corn in a jar: a minister had been invited to preach a trial sermon at a church which had no pastor. After the service, one of the elders invited the minister to his home for dinner, which was a good meal. The minister was complimented on his sermon, but no invitation was extended to him to become the pastor. Why not? When asked if he wanted some corn, he passed his glass and not his plate so he come get some.

I always thought that was real corn in those Mason jars.  Maybe the liquid on them was....?

Maybe that is why they always won blue ribbons?

I cringe to think of what Sam's Gap was like before they built I-26, the interstate highway is bad enough.....

Truck is at Kenworth in Oak Creek, WI, getting warranty work done, so came home for a while.  Hopefully, will be able to head out again tomorrow.

Noticed our city installed medians at our railroad crossings, the quiet zone might get reinstated in a couple months.

Funny sight in the past week:  Saw one of those little Fiat 500 cars painted up like the General Lee.....

Peace be with you.

I am beginning to think computers are a pox on humanity. I have fought with one program since last Friday, and it's winning . I thought I was pretty savvy until I asked for help, and it sounded something like RENAME THE BLEMIS FILE AND SAVE AS FRAMITISH BLEPHAR. THEN DELETE THE OSMONTIS FROM THE FONEBONE FILE AND IT SHOULD DEFAULT TO THE VRAFTIS WHEN YOU FRAPPIN IT. Oy!

And that's the rest of the story.

Randy, I drove over Sam's Gap several times before anybody even thought of there being a limited access highway there, and I driven through there once on the interstate, which is a dream.

You should try Hickory Nut Gap on what was US 74 just west of Bat Cave, east of Asheville. Once when I was going back to Bristol, I was picked up by a man from New York, and he said that where he came from, the highway would be built through the mountain.

I wonder what you would think of the highway by Lake Lure (farther east); it follows the shore of that man-made lake, and if you are traveling at the speed limit, you definitely feel sideways thrusts. Once, I took a bus from Charlotte to Asheville at night, and was waked as we were going by the lake, and heard a woman across the aisle making use of a bag that she had brought with her because she knew she was going to be sick.

The most bothersome road I drove last year when I was going to Bristol was just west of Mountain City, Tennessee--25 mph hairpin curves on both sides of the mountain; I really rehoned my mountain driving skills there!

The secret word for today is "wildlife adaptation".

Went fishing at the smaller city lake.  Two poles; bobbers.  Driver sitting quietly in his chair, I am right behind him in Millie reading the paper (no news, just paper).  An adolescent blue heron "strolled" right to left in front of Driver.  We both held our breaths.  For about 5 min - no one moved.  Boy, that is one unstressed creature!

Driver said heron went down the bank a ways and then caught a fish, but being young, he smacked the water with his face more than once trying to get more.  So immediately after that when he could move again, Driver caught about a 3 lb carp and within minutes, the Lady Ducks swim team swam right in front of  him!  All 6 of them.  All fairly close to the bank.

During all this, the carp are jumping out of the water about 50 feet from shore.

I think they are all going by or jumping to check out the Driver's ugly fishing shirt!!!   Mischief

It pains me to think that when you reach a certain age, the wildlife isn't afraid of you any more - or maybe they were looking for peanuts?

We have a guy around the house that decided to install a four-inch exhaust stack out the left rear corner of his Chevy Cavalier.  I just shook my head.....

The other interesting one was the Harley that passed me towing a trailer made out of a full-sized coffin......

I've seen several pick-m-up trucks lately with vertical stacks in the 4" range (including some "duals").  Usually "lifted," too.  I'm certainly impressed...

Great Blue Herons - One tangled with an osprey at a park near the old hometown.  Some birdwatchers saw it happen (and got a picture or two) and also rescued the heron, which came out the worse of the two.  It's recovered and has been released.  I'm sure it will avoid osprey nests in the future.

I had a wonderful experience just now: I was out on the balcony of my timeshare, looking down at the swimming pool--and a hummingbird flew in front of my face and hovered there for a moment, looking at me before flying away. I had never before seen one so closely.

There is a family of Steller's jays here, which come and takes bread crumbs that have been thrown on the balcony floor. Two years ago (the last time that I had been up), I saw no jays, but there were some crows, which I never seen before. Yesterday morning, a crow lit on the balcony rail and hopped along the rail until I frightened it off.

Johnny - see!  You get older and right away they want to inspect you up close.  And our crows are curious, want a peanut and are terrified of the other birds.  Even the sparrows can chase them away.  And while the squirrels don't do anything but gorge themselves, the crows won't go near them (smart birds)

Tree - bad news for Heron.  Driver said the other day, he was sure he saw an eagle flying way on other side of lake.  We have a creek that runs along that side of lake and I think we had one or two in area a couple of years ago   We don't have a lot of eagles - they are more in southeast corner of state around power plants and warm water.  Maybe that is why our heron was way on opposite side of eagle sighting.
