Here in north Jersey we had sleet and freezing rain last night. This morning tree branches are ice covered but so far none have fallen. It is 33 degrees, above freezing so I put out my rosemary bush that I hope to winter over. At night it goes back in the cellar.
BOC - are you sure you don't have the flu? Did you get someone to shoot you?
John - did you get in on Hurricane Sandy? Of course, the cold just adds to the misery.
CW - we are going to have a few warm days and then by Sunday we will send you some more cold weather. Sorry 'bout that. Can't seem to keep the cold air in Canada where it should be. But no precip for a few days.

Thanks for your concern, Mookie. My wife and I got through Sandy with no problems. Just a few tree branches down, nothing I couldn't handle myself. I don't live on the shore which is where the real destruction was. New Jersey Transit's Montclair-Boonton line is about a mile and a half from my house. The Catenary is still out of service in Hoboken so there are no electric trains. After a couple of weeks to clear trees from the tracks NJT started diesel service.

Got up to around the freezing point today, but with a lot of wind. Stayed inside and put the first coat of barn red paint on the railings today, second coat will go on tomorrow (can says wait at least 8 hours to re-coat, and this is latex paint!). Also have the annual family doctor visit tomorrow, should be interesting.....
Every once in a while, I get to go pick up at U.S. Salt in Watkins Glen, NY. Once backed into the loading dock, have to don a reflective vest, safety glasses, and hair and beard nets just to sweep out the trailer with their broom, which is finer than the one I carry. All this to load up with 44,000lbs of food-grade salt, the last place I delivered this to was a chicken processing plant in North Carolina......
U.S. Salt it one of those more "interesting" places, the entrance is through a long driveway running between rail siding and building, that is only wide enough for one truck. Signs are posted to turn to a certain CB channel and announce yourself inbound or outbound, though my first visit there, another driver disregarded those, then asked me if I could back up. Told him @$^&*%$# NO!!!.......

At any rate - they are really that fussy about salt? I would imagine it is in sacks, so I am also going to imagine that this sounds a little like overkill. Maybe you can enlighten me (us)
Hand prints are very hard on paint, so maybe it is so your paint will last more than a couple of years?

The salt is in bags of various weights, but I'm to the point now where I do not ask questions any more, I just drive the truck.......

Lots of sun today but it was not enough to keep the ccold at bay like it did yesterday...the westerly winds kept springing up.
Got most of the creeping crud out of my system...Mattie' Chile did it...chile slow cooked with cheesecloth bag with cut up habanero and ghost peppers in the middle of said chile...mmmmmm...good!!

Randy - That traffic call is a regular thing on the St Lawrence River here. Two ships could probably pass in the American Narrows, but it'd be real close, and the river is upwards of 300 feet deep there, so if you sink....
The nautical types have a regular term they use - "security." What you'll hear on the marine channel they use on the Seaway (they don't ride 16) is "Security, security, security. This is the {name of ship} downbound for the American Narrows at Rock Island Light."
They do it upbound (against the current), too.
Decent day here today. The radar showed some snow early, but none hit the ground that I know of. Cold, though, and it looks to get a tad chillier.

Weatherbeguessers are throwing darts again..we could be looking at upwards of 3" of the whitestuff or none at all...but they all agree on one thing..temperatures are going lower by next week..

Good Thursday morning all. Cloudy w/temps ranging from 30 to 32, 33 degrees this morning. Might see temps in the upper 30s this afternoon, possibly 40, 41 degrees. Then another systems comes in Sunday night, Monday morning, with highs in the 20s, lows in the teens. Don't you just love this winter weather.
Joe, thanks for taking care of breakfast. Brother slipped in sometime, don't know when. His wife said she woke up about 5, and he was already in the bed, fast asleep. Hope he's feeling all right.

.....Checking in with almost all blue sky and bright sunshine. Cold, 22 earlier this morning. No snow here, but looked at the Roanoke cam and they have a white ground. Mon. thru Wed., we'll have some Arctic air move in on us, and then on out by Thu. as it looks now. Warmer beyond then.....
We're approaching our coldest {avg.}, week of the year, so this can be expected, and soon the avg. temp. figures will start back up...Looking forward to that.

Gas price here yesterday was as low as 3.09....I wonder if the oil co's. will allow it to touch down into the 2 dollar range once.....Last cycle we got to 3.05 and then bingo.....They had to hurry and quickly get it raised back so not to let it fall any further.....
With the house all closed up for Winter....I almost never even hear the trains pass on nearby NS Frankfort line....Roughly 1 mi. north of me...Summertime, and with windows open....sometimes it sounds like it's passing out on my street in front of me....
We're working thru Winter, and for me, that's a good thing.....

I was working in the kitchen around sunset and was treated to three cardinal pairs at the feeder. Nice.
Cardinals always remind me of a loving couple. We have one pair that seems to live around here and always nest really close. If she eats, he stands guard close by.
I am waiting for one of them to smack a squirrel since they all like the sunflower seeds!

well saw new power in defiance put to work.The ND&W was doing a maitenance blitz on the yard tracks and main here in Defiance.All three of the engines were hooked onto cars.Saw the csx y101 work omni,sandrige plastics and the siding for the ND&W.Q 380 had some commuter cars tacked on the end too.About time for bed.Early start tomorrow.Modelcar we'll be coming through your area.

We are in for a mild day today...temperature going up to 40F!! Yay!! Heatwave!! Tropical Heatwave!! But with showers...not so yay...more like...sigh.
Around here we have yet to see much snow...it has been a relatively dry January so far here...even with the showers there has been little of that even...
Today I need to get more groceries into mine manse and also get some more pink stuff well...tomorrow will be my day for train room ...that is..if HD list does not show up...
